When I'm teaching students how to write about trauma, I often ask them to carry five other stories about themselves for protection. Like a verbal medicine bundle: there's what happened to you, how you survived, and carry some other stories, like:

if we're learned anything from Native genocide it's that some genocide receives no memorial, no walls with names - they simply build shit over our bodies - remember they found a grave full of children.

We're more than what happened to us, but it's also okay if you just need to sit in the pain and execute how awful it felt. I support all victim and survivor stories, any way you tell it. Holding five other stories is mostly a safety measure to not feel like I'm only one thing.

I'm often asked how I can talk about trauma and abuse. I tell every reader, every bright student, that the shame doesn't belong to me. I'm not ashamed. The people who hurt me, that's their shame to carry, not mine. Abusers want us to carry shame and think it's our fault. No.

Joyce Carol Oates shouldn't have written Blonde. What could a literary non-hottie know about the exploitation of femme, highly sexualized women - women who look and act like Oates have no compassion or love for women like Marilyn. They're just as bad as men at writing them.

Indigenous women can be found in a landfill, all we're asking is a government search. We've only asked that the Canadian government search. After Pickton you'd really doubt us.

Hi to all the new followers! You can expect some writing advice and my own singular opinions on being NDN! I try very hard to bring things from my classroom here, because I believe what we learn in an MFA should be for everybody. โค๏ธ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿ‘Šโค๏ธ

When you sever a tie, really sever that shit. I learned that recently. Don't check to see if they're still awful, they are. Clean house and let the light in. You can be like, "I don't know her." and mean it. Sometimes the best revenge is abandonment.

emotional abuse on a person dealing with mental illness can be so hard to talk about and I haven't seen it written about or discussed enough - it was very easy for my ex to invalidate and question every feeling and thought I had by calling it symptomatic to bipolar disorder.

don't listen to calls for civility or politeness right now that's a colonizer's tactic to try and calm you down when anger is a correct and fair response, and people who are angry and want to express it in protest have my support and understanding.

Native women never win by fluke. When you see us winning it took so much to get there and we were stopped or discouraged every step of the way by someone. It's really that rough. At least for me. Every level requires resolve and defiance.

*whispers* a little native history: thee Native activist/speaker Gyasi Ross called himself a young elder way back in 2016 on his podcast and kinda never lived it down in some circles. People still joke about it. Ndns are kinda mean lol.

Writing advice: don't worry about who got what at the end of the year when you got yours. You did it. You made it out the year with your life and some good pages. We're okay.

@CaitCorrain this feels like white tears - there's no need to center yourself or your condition in an apology and you don't need to justify your actions, you have to account for them and offer actionable items to make amends - Also give all the empathy to those you harmed.

Omg imagine keeler's face when she saw an ndn woman she tried to take down winning. Keeler. You should clap. This is a win for us. Don't hurt our own for notoriety ๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿ’•

My students worry about working with fragmented memories or they're unsure how to write in order when they only feel disordered about it but I tell them things don't need to be in order to be beautiful. You're alright. Just write. โ™ฅ๏ธ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’ž๐Ÿง I wanna see your disordered heart.

Applying to programs, it was demoralizing to write "I'm brown and poor" in application letters, but I was advised to do it. We need advisors and faculty who look like us and can let us apply for things from a place of pride instead of a place of subjugation.
