I am the exact opposite of a Nintendo stan (or a Ark/Wildcard stan), but seeing Palworld make tens of millions of dollars off of the most blatantly creative bankrupt, poorly put together asset flip game is so depressing.
Their entire company strategy seems to be theft.
On this hallowed day, we give remembrance to Kenji Yamamoto's OST for Budokai 3. His complete disregard for copyright law and intellectual property shall live forever.
I can sit here and preach the superiority of the manga all I want. But there is no possible way to watch this without getting hairs stood straight up level chills.
The thing you *actually* have to understand about Dragon Ball is that Funimation (and Viz) love to turn it into a parody for no reason because they often do not treat it with as much respect as it deserves.
(Images: the actual japanese lines)
Can we just take a second to put some respect on Mitsuo Hashimoto's name? In addition to plenty of other works, this man directed some of the Dragon Ball franchises absolute best episodes. He really was a directorial force to be reckoned with.
It isn't even just the stolen or "borrowed" content, either. The entire game is comprised of the UE5 default assets and barely functional animations. The entire thing just reeks of "pump this game out and make some quick millions before it dies off"
LETS TALK DB RELEASES! AB Groupe vs Seed of Might.
Tldr: Theyre both great, the both have pros and cons, and Dragon Ball has never been this good. Thread time!
Toriyama did not seem like a guy whose identity was his work at all. But man... it just seems so deeply unfair and hurtful that he would not get to see to fruition Daima, the one Dragon Ball project in the last decade that he seemed genuinely passionate about.
Note: This is mostly a joke. What skin tone Toriyama gave Goku (or anyone, for that matter) varied wildly.
But in general, I'd say the anime DID trend noticably lighter than Toriyama's full color pages and illustrations.
KamehaCon has now come out and re-added a person to their roster that is well known among the community for violating guests (including minors). To the point where both RT and Funi fired him.
Let me make this abundantly clear. KamehaCon does not care about its patrons' safety.
I don't, like, morally fault anyone for playing it obviously. The onus is on the studio.
But man, I can't imagine anything more deeply depressing for industry/prospective game devs than this. Why pour your heart and soul into something when you could just steal and win?
@austin_noah
Extremely cold take, cool new video games will only continue existing for you to play when the labor and artistic output of those who work on them is valued & protected.
If you want a world where we lose games like BOTW & GoW, but gain 300,000 "Mario in UE5" games then enjoy
If weve got Goku following the techniques and teachings of angels now, and Vegeta following the techniques and teachings of Gods of Destruction now...
Greetings Toyotaro, and welcome to my TED Talk as to why Gohan should now further pursue Kaioshin techniques and teachings.
For what it's worth, I find this changed line harmless all things told.
But, with that in mind, it *is* kinda annoying watching the show in your native language and not being able to trust if what the characters are saying is their actual lines or something else.
Celebrity deaths never really bother me. But this has my heart sunk into the pit of my stomach.
I dont even know what to say. There is no succinct way to describe how incredible of an artist Toriyama was. Heartbroken.
@Jade_shitpost
Game freak sucking ass at making video games does not mean people should be able to just steal their artists' work. Also, the game steals from BOTW, Ark, Fan art, and so on.
Also, yes, it is an asset flip to an extent. Not in the creature designs, but in the enviro, fx, etc

こんにちは!
あなたの素晴らしいアニメーションに音と音楽を付けました! あとは声だけです! 村田さん、いつもありがとうございます。
Hello!
I have added sound and music to your amazing animation! Now all that is missing is voices! Amazing work as always!
Unfortunate truth: power scaling matters in DB. Db is a battle Shonen, much of its narrative tension is derived from power struggles, and the ability to overcome them. If powers are inconsistent and ham fisted, that narrative tension loses credence.
I'm not even some IP purist or anything. Many of the worlds games started with EXTREME "inspiration" from existing games.
But they ruled & succeeded because they took that, & did something with it. Tried something new, poured some additional soul into it.
There is nothing here.
The contiguous run of the 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai arc, through Demon King Piccolo, all the way to the end of the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai, has every right to be considered the best run of manga ever produced. It is impossible to put down once started, and a masterpiece.
Theres a lot of things I enjoy about both DBS & GT. But chief among their greatest sins is turning the series into what used to be an exaggerated joke of "DBZ is just screaming until your hair changes color".
This image shows how many transformations were in the original manga.
The Yo Son Goku special is such a primo example of how much the color pallate and background design really matters. The designs we got for the characters were largely similar to what we'd get for Super. But the difference in those two aspects really makes a world of difference.

I have no more problem with this than any of the Simpsons post golden Era. The Simpsons has operated on a floating timeline for a long time now. We're just facing the consequences of being older now
Looks like Netflix finally updated their ATLA to be sourced from the FAR SUPERIOR Blu Ray release. Thank god.
Now I can finally actually recommend people watch Avatar on netflix without gagging.
Avatar: The Last Airbender is now available in HD so if you want to see every glorious fiber of Appa’s fur, now is the time. And if you haven’t watched Avatar yet what are you doing why are you like this.
For all his incredible music he created for Dragon Ball, ultimately I don't think any of Sumitomo's contributions will ever surpass Bardock Falls. Just an incredible, insane, 5 minute long, multi-part, to-scene work.
I dont even like DB Minus, but the score completely sells it.
I am so ridiculously pro-purple hair Bulma. Blue/teal hair Bulma is fine... but purple hair Bulma, of all varieties, is absolute peak. (Also purple hair Trunks is better as well. But im not as passionate about that)
If there's any one thing I want to remember amongst my deep grief, it's that his work will live forever.
There is no greater memorial, no greater epitaph than the eternal life of ones art. May it live on forever, and Toriyama live on through it. Rest in peace.
Between Budokai Tenkaichi revival, and some other stuff that is brewing behind the scenes, DB fans are really, truly in for an absolutely lavish treat of a few years.
Feelsgood
Quick comparison of the Dragon Ball Broadcast Audio that came out the other day. Like taking off ear muffs, it is.
pls twitter dont destroy the audio quality :'(
Mob Psycho 100 is, in fact, the ONLY must-see anime in existence. The rest is optional.
It is a crowning example of every single artist, board, composer, and creative involved coming together -- with ample schedule time -- to achive capital a Art.
Since this thread attracted attention, let's clarify a few things:
This game is creatively devoid not solely because it clearly stole loads of Pokémon designs, but because it has almost *nothing* unique of its own going on. Everything* is either a ripoff or an asset store asset
As I said before, games taking heavy inspiration from others & iterating isn't new or wrong. But those *did* something. Palworld is literally just "what if we reskinned arc, with legally distinct Pokémon, plus UE5 guns and satisfactory".
Instead of iteration, it's Oops All Theft
In a world, where the Ocean dub actors were still doing the voices.
I added in the SFX and music to help immerse the whole thing. (Original actually didnt have music here, but it helped cover up the con noise.)

Let there be no misunderstanding. KamehaCon was aware of Vic's nature, and removed him from the roster for the sake of attendee safety.
They have curbed that safety for the sake of more money. It's very simple.
Really hate that, rather than enjoying this sweet tweet from Toyo about Toriyama's last notes he gave him, my feed is filled with misinformation from people that literally cant even read the machine translation.
Toriyama did not draw that image. Its a recreation. Pretty simple.
Those wanting another DB movie over a new series sadden me.
Its nice to get 1000 points of joy out a movie
but 1000 points once every 2-3 years is not as good as 100 points every week
Lastly, just want those reading all this to know that the pals are not stolen *assets*. They are stolen designs.
Stolen assets are in game elements directly ripped from another and plopped into your game/engine.
Heres something people are going to call a hot take, but its not.
The two most prominent, important problems with the way dragon ball super/modern db looked are color and line weight.
Yes the designs were worse than before, but that impact pales in comparison to the other 2.
I feel like the scene leading up to Vegeta's sacrifice is one of the most deceptively artful bits of the Funimation score. The added wind-whistle element to the music, letting it hang back to set a tone while still satisfying the required wall-to-wall music, so much to unpack
Cell arc hate needs to be stopped at all costs. The arguments against it range from silly to intentionally obtuse.
(Obviously this is opinion based. I just wished I could see anyone back their opinions up in a valid, good faith manner)
Evil Goku from u6 made everyone want to quit db when it was first announced.
Freeza instead of Boo at the ToP was the worst news ever when first leaked.
Everyone take a deep breath. Just wait and see how it's executed. This Broli movie just might be the best db movie yet.
Note: This is mostly a joke. What skin tone Toriyama gave Goku (or anyone, for that matter) varied wildly.
But in general, I'd say the anime DID trend noticably lighter than Toriyama's full color pages and illustrations.
Very confused by the hate for Funi's English Limit Break x Survivor. It's definitely their best go at an English OP/ED for Dragon Ball in 5 years. Maybe ever?
Goku I drew on lunch today. I must always be improving, otherwise what is all my slacking off at work for?
Also I miss Gokus gi with the black undershirt
Now that I can talk about it, Shintani returning for Super 2 is truly the most blessed thing that could possibly happen.
Not only are his designs so wonderful and faithful, but his corrections (and the style he landed on by the time broli came out) was the best in the movie imo.
@TotallyNotMark
Im going to avoid using an inbetween frame and go with something that ticks all my bad checkmarks:
Awful, awful, awful compositing. Can barely see any of the actual drawing
Really rough, rigid, asymmetrical drawing.
Not framed or directed in any interesting way.
Kid Trunks is lame in Super not because of his lame outfit (which is lame) but because he went from spoiled and often grumpy (vegeta-like), to Goten 2.0.
