I'm italian 🇮🇹 working in Japan as storyboard artist in game company. I have been working on anime too, short storyboard for pokemon sun&moon, keyframes and secondary keyframes for Vinland saga, Neverland, Overlord II, Merc Storia ,P5 etc.

Anime industry doesn’t need to be “open to foreigners” it needs proper pays, proper union and proper education. Accepting low rate jobs will just make everything worse. I will never stop fighting for this industry to be better , even if it means to create enemies for what I tweet
I still clearly remember that day when I told western producer I was working on Vinland Saga and he was like “that’s not what otaku wants, It will never have success as an anime” LMAO sure 🤣
人手不足ではなく、作品が多すぎて給料は酷くて…誰もやりたくないの。AIやる場合かよ?世界中でめっちゃ大きいビジネスなのでクリエイターにお金だせ!shortage of labor is because industry has too many productions underpaid with absurd schedules. Pay the creators properly!!

LO/Genga in anime is not something that everyone can do so easily, It takes a lot of time learning and doing douga. The fact some productions are giving work to young guy on twitter It shows how the anime industry is collapsing because of horrible schedule and bad pay
Also I can’t stand people saying that is ok to be pay less for anime because you are doing your dream job. It’s so unprofessional way of think, it ruins the industry. This also apply to any other job.
I create a lot of enemies in the industry by speaking loud or refusing jobs, same for the tweets here. But I don’t care,I just care about anime and the people working on them so I want everyone to know the truth. Support the creators directly and stay away from big platforms
Both Astroboy and Black Jack from 2003 are great. My teacher was chief director and storyboard artist for both the series. I learnt a lot regarding enshutsu and ekonte from him and I’m very thankful for that.
leakers are bad, but what do you expect from studios that literally pick animators randomly on twitter and send them entire production files without even a password? Plus the total absence of any form of NDA or contract to sign by both part, like really… lmao
This is a class about how to draw Douga (inbetween) and how to trace properly . The sensei is Fukui Tomoko who was one of my amazing teacher at university. I wish more people would learn this , both Japanese and non Japanese.
Today might be the beginning of the end not only for the anime industry but Japanese entertainment as a whole, as the new Invoice System for Japanese Consumption Tax comes into effect.
MAYBE artists working in animation should start striking too like the writers are doing right now. After all there is a huge business and profit behind this industry.
ライターさんのストライクを見て、アニメーション業界の絵描く人もやった方がいいと思うけど、やらないんだよなー 😩
tv writers are not the reason teachers are underpaid.
teachers are not the reason nurses are underpaid.
nurses aren’t the reason assembly line workers are also underpaid.
we are not in competition with each other. everyone deserves a living wage.

I’m sorry if I looked on fire in my tweets , but as many people in the industry we are SICK of this attitude and low pay in anime. I’m glad my voices reached some people. I tried to not talk many times because of consequences , but now I couldn’t stop really.
Other than problems with anime studios salaries, I think also the problems are some people in the industry itself. They are totally brainwashed to accept lower salaries while they are told “this is an higher pay for the industry standards you should be thankful!”
Btw there are actually very good foreigners already working in anime since a bit, mainly animators . The problem is the rest of the non professional part that are invading the industry with low rates. Many Japanese animators are already leaving because of the salary issue …
I work in a small company as well so I understand is hard to manage and to get high salaries, but still even as an indie I pay animators more than 2500 yen per layout. I did the same when I made original animation by myself, pay with my own money.
If you want to know more how to make ekonte / storyboard, I would say don’t watch anime, but instead watch movies. And with movies I mean GOOD movies and masterpieces, not the mainstream garbage we had in the latest years ^^”
This is a short animation we are doing in our company for our original indie game. Even if we are a small indie company and are financing the project by ourself, we pay one cut like this at least 2-3 times more than what anime companies pay
We are preparing a special thing for our game... we will have an opening animation! Here a WIP of one of the animation made by the amazing

As I expected, a lot of people cannot understand what a good LO in anime is. Stop with this thing that having a good “good drawing” is a layout, because it’s not enough for a LO. There is so much more than that , and that’s why LO is very difficult and need a lot of training
I don't consider myself very good with LO,but as enshutsu I have seen and checked a lot of LO.Most of the time the perspective is wrong, that means redrawing everything.Doesn't matter how good, clean and detailed the drawing is, if you can't draw It as a frame, It's a bad LO
By accepting such rates you are creating a spiral where the rates will always be low because the studio will always find animators willing to work at such conditions. Also most of the stuff is corrected evily by sakuga and enshutsu which shouldn't be exactly how anime is done...

very disrespectful towards pros in the industry who studied hard to get where they are, It doesn't even look professional anymore...
BUT luckily there are also young and good animators who study a lot, I just wish studios would filter that because anime industry now is CHAOS
Actually animators aren’t the only one with bad salaries , other positions have pretty bad pay rates too. Considering there is a huge business behind anime, it’s pretty ridiculous.
I personally don’t know what is worst, the fact that stuff like this goes virals on twitter or the fact that “journalists” can’t even fact checks the thing they write.
A Colombian illustrator convinced a bunch of media outlets that she was an animator for Miyazaki's latest film, The Boy and the Heron (君たちはどう生きるか), but netizens checked the credits and could not find her name. She has since deleted her Twitter account. 1/3
I like making anime but the awful schedule and salary it’s not worth the quantity of work you will have to do. It’s just so disrespectful towards creators in my opinion and people shouldn’t accept low rates because you are making this industry worst for animators.
@SenorWoberto
Tell to all the people that accept ridiculous job offers on twitter.Mostly kids with absolutely no experience of anime. I blame studios for this but I also blame people accepting this conditions. Sometimes you just have to say NO if you really care about people in this industry
CEOs like Iwata are extremely rare. He wasn’t only a “business person” he was first of all a programmer, a producer, he KNEW what he was CEO of. He was also a very hard worker, he knew what was like to work to produce something . That’s why he could do thing like that.
even PAs mostly are young and with no experience, no one teach them and they end up looking on twitter. I mainly blame japanese studios because they are creating all of this MESS... meanwhile many japanese animators run into other industries
Why can’t anime companies afford to pay more than an indie studio?! The industry itself is making a ton of money outside Japan and anime are very popular , this is like NOT OK 👎
This. Right now enshutsu and sakkan are adjusting too much because there aren’t good animators as before. It’s not about drawing good for LO , it’s about acting , perspective , eye level, timing etc… this is why most newbies can’t do LO
Depends on the type of contract but generally Gyoumu itaku shouldn’t be a full time! They are really scamming you, you shouldn’t work with people like that . Full time should be seishain or keiyaku , and they should pay you health insurance and pension.
My salary is less than 200,000 yen, I work 6 days a week with extreme overtime, there are days I leave the company at 5:00am. My contract is something called gyoumu itaku which basically means I'm a considered freelance even though I am a fulltime employee, meaning no benefits
I won’t complain about the quantity of work because animation takes a lot, but the fact that it’s not payed properly even when you have to overwork by correcting others mistakes…it’s just not right. too easy thinking that the sakkan or the enshutsu will correct everything.
There is also a mentality problem, that you should be pride to work hard even if you are payed less because you are doing “AnImE!1”. This is well known by people on the industry and usually used as an excuse to make your work double with less costs.
I’m sad to say that nowadays someone like Toriyama would be probably turned down by most of producers or directors that have really no good sense for this kind of things … I’m glad he was born in the right period and met the right persons! We got great stuff from him!
News showing Yuji Horii’s ref image for the Dragon Quest slime next to the design Toriyama came back with. Instead of going for the gritty realism of, say, Wizardry, he made this. Hard to argue that his visual sense wasn’t a huge part of what made DQ so popular. Absolute legend
ポケットモンスターサン&ムーン放送されているけど、「ポケもんだい」のところで絵コンテと演出やらせていただきました^^とても短いパートですが楽しかったです。I did storyboard for a small part in this week's episode for pokemon sun&moon.

! I mainly work as storyboard and direction for anime and videogames! I’m also working on an indie game full of cats in paper mario style!
A bit in disagreement with leaving all Douga to keyframe artists. It could work in some productions like indies, but it’s not reasonable for bigger anime productions. It happens because Douga artists are disappearing,no one teach properly and because the pay for Douga is terrible

In my first anime studio one day I felt so bad I couldn’t even get out of bed. I don’t know how but I managed to go to a near hospital and get an IV fluids. When I told that to my boss he was like “ahah it happens in this industry” and just joked about It.
WTF?!
I think drawing as a job is wonderful but very hard because of the skills and the competence you need. And another hard thing is that you need other people to understand that, because since you like your job everyone will think that It will be easy and fun for you
there is a reason if in any Japanese anime company you have to start from inbetween before step up to Layout. This also give the opportunity to see a lot of good LO and understand how to improve.
I was told I would never learn english or japanese, never be able to make my own original short or to work in Japan. After getting small prizes in animation contest I started working in anime industry at 25. I now work in game industry and do original comics in my free time

Yurei Deco enshutsu was mainly done on remote , so remote direction is possible. But of course some times it would be necessary to be on site. For example during the music/ SE mix in the studio. At that time I was in Tokyo and had a very good time with the staff and the director

that will start airing today!
I will tell you why some people in the industry kind of justify the anime low salaries: so their companies can hire people at lower price! Very simple ehehehe
I’m not gonna retweet what is going viral now regarding anime work pay(no free commercial), but it’s not something new.Everyone complained about Ghibli pay a few years back remember? NOTHING CHANGED 🫠
When I was working in anime studio I remember every morning for around 30 minutes I did gesture and realistic drawing. I have a lot of sketchbook full of that, even if the drawings weren't very good sometimes , it helped me a lot improving.
Today I was very busy with meetings at TGS and I couldn’t stay at my booth for more than 20 minutes 🤣 hopefully things will get better in this other days , so please drop by at E85 in the indie area! You can take pics with the T. rex and the kitties!! 📸
