Ayu she says she’s 18.
Shuk exclaims “Fuooh, Sedang elok, sedang elok”
Shuib intervenes, “apakah sedang eloknya?”
“.. maknanya sedang elok untuk mengenal hidup”
Shuib says to Ayu, you don’t want to know him.

Pronunciation to the sea.... This is brilliant.
Just shared Hajar's video on Linkedin, on Accent Privilege and how Accent Bias can impact a person's career.
Dear Malaysians who are getting the AZ vaccine - congratulations, you're so fortunate. I've seen many asking about side effects so I thought I'd share my experience. A thread:
If you see any form of harassment in public, please intervene. Here’s how. This graphic on Islamophobia applies to other forms of harassment too. I was rescued this way when I was a teen molested on a bus.

Most people are commenting on Shuk, understandably.
But I want people to look at Shuib and how he intervened (read how I described it)
Men MUST intervene when they see sexual harassment or inappropriate behaviour by other men.
Men CAN and MUST call each other out.

Yes, that was a sexual innuendo. Shuib intervened in a way showing his disapproval, and as an upstander, turned to Shuk asking him to explain his statement. Ideally, Shuk, caught, should have apologised.
This is horrific, but has anyone noticed how no one is blaming the drunk men who agreed to go to his flat? As it should be. Victims are not at fault. If the police and CPS believed the one man who reported Sinaga, they should believe women who report rape.
Ain is an incredible inspiration to all teens out there. You can speak up, fight lawsuits, start a movement, get featured in global media AND score in exams.
When a white woman films a man of colour she does so with the knowledge that she will be protected as a victim. This has the desired effect. The man backs off knowing the power behind her. This could be how she got past the mall guards.
Dear Prof Datuk Roziah Mohd Janor.
As someone who advises on sexual harassment and workplace bullying cases, I can tell you, it can take months or a few years before a person dare report the incident. 🧵
Judging from the Astro Warna clip, Shuk hasn’t learnt. The fact he can’t even remember this incident makes you wonder whether this is common behaviour for him.
To think that a few weeks ago, Malaysia had a PM who was a doctor, a DPM who was a doctor, and an incredible Health Minister who was a doctor - a dream for any country in today's world. Unfortunately shortsighted politicians got in the way.
I don’t think Shuib could have done more in a live session, but I hope he, and the producers gave a serious warning to Shuk after the show - you do not talk to women that way! Ideally, say if it happens again, he's out.
Instead Shuk gave another interpretation, which we all know wasn’t his intention. I see this a lot. It was a gentle caution from Shuib, but did it land?
Thousands of Malaysians are understandably upset with this. I haven't seen a single person defend this behaviour. The fact that this could be aired and gone through several producers shows this is endemic. The UK went through something similar a few months ago...2/
Notice too how Shuib reassured Ayu. It was done playfully, in tone with the show, and I am not sure if she was reassured. It’s important as upstanders, we support the person who is harmed. Shuib was clearly conscious of her feelings.
Meanwhile, in Malaysia, some celebrity beats his 9 year old daughter because she takes off her hijab in front of men she doesn't know. He videos himself applying medicine to her wounded back while she cries. he posts the video on Instagram for his 3.1m followers.
A sudden change of PM, and the police are now warning “illegal” protests. Are Malaysians’ freedom that short lived? I’ve seen people deleting their tweets and going private. This is a culture of fear.
When the UK police arrested Nur Fitri for possession of 30,000 images/videos of child porn - some which he created, some Class A- the worst abuse, Malaysians were stunned. Police needed therapy for trauma...2/
There's a lot of disturbing things about his points. Most of all though, is that he puts something private on social media. It makes her look bad if she decides no more kids. He looks like the good guy.
That's manipulative coercion.

Would these tips work for you, mommies?

This is still sexual harassment. She should not have done this. Yes, he laughed it off (as many women do when harassed), but if he was feeling uncomfortable (I think he was), then it's sexual harassment. Men are sexually harassed too, we don't talk about it as much.
As a single mom in Malaysia, I relied on domestic helpers to carry on working and move up the career ladder. This is true in Malaysia and Singapore. Women can succeed because we exploit "maids" from Indonesia and the Philippines. Here in the UK, women don't have this "privilege".
@saifulnizam769
That does look like waterboarding. It's torture. It's assault. Need to charge these guys. They think they can get away with it because of their religious position and robes - which makes it even worse. This will traumatise the guy for life.
Yet another woman has to dim her shine and her talents in order to appease her husband (who was violent towards her). Yes, Sugu is the problem but it goes deeper. When boys and men are brought up in a patriarchal society, they can't handle...
Today I learnt that not only has Pakistan had a sexual harassment law for 3 years, but it has banned underage marriages (under 18). If a Muslim country can do it, what’s Malaysia’s excuse?
For the adults who are criticising kids for taking one day out of school to strike for climate emergency, just know that Malaysian kids have missed school for nearly a week because of Indonesian forest fires. It’s real and it’s happening now.
@LBC
@PeterTatchell
@SangitaMyska
I don’t know a single LGBT Malaysian who has applauded Matt Healy. If Tatchell really has his ears on the ground, he would understand how Healy has done far more harm to LGBT movement in Malaysia. Suggest you speak to Malaysians, not Brits.
@littlekosovo
@ladymissazira
This is exactly how women are excluded from so called Islamic spaces. It’s discriminatory. Though I do feel the guard was manifesting some kind of hatred towards women who don’t fit into his submissive woman box.
Dear Malaysians. Every single one of you. Whatever happens, you are powerful. Others stand in awe of you. Always remember that. Justice. Integrity. Sheer Grit. You will prevail.
@SaadOmer3
He's looking at you in the way you looked at him when you were two years old. In complete awe and wonder, thinking, "my hero," in your head.

Di negara Barat, the libraries are well stocked. Academic books are hugely expensive everywhere. If anything, it needs to be the educational institutions that make books accessible for students, without harming authors' IP.
@moniza_hossain
And crime thrillers about serial killings are popular. Completely with you on this. I love Nabakov. That first paragraph in Lolita is so melodic which makes it even creepier.
FYI I was a Malaysian activist against child sexual abuse.
We can hold that complexity.
For Malaysian Twitter.
Anyone realise the moment you hear a film titled "Perempuan Itu", you know it's bad news, whilst "Lelaki Itu" is fairly neutral.
That's how the media and film have portrayed women all these years.
Can we

I’m dismayed at the backlash she got at her request to be called “doctor”. Due to gender stereotyping, women doctors aren’t addressed by Dr compared to their male colleagues. Day in day out, this hurts. We call this micro aggressions … 2/
Today, a patient's husband kept referring me as Puan. I smiled sheepishly and corrected him "Doctor ye Encik"
He said "Oh bukan panggil Puan lagi penting ke?"
To which I replied "Mana lagi penting cik, kalau saya dah kahwin atau saya layak jadi orang yang rawat isteri Encik?"
He was angry at her because she did not guard her "maruah", loosely translated as dignity/shame. Why is a 9 year old responsible for guarding her dignity against men? See how early the gaslighting starts?
My sister? A sore arm. My symptoms were fairly common, but remember - this is nothing compared to Covid. It means your body is building up immunity. Make sure you clear your diary for 2 days post jab - just in case. Drink fluids and rest. Good luck!
I wish Malaysians would stop shaming people for their accents. It's wrong to shame a teacher who speaks English with a strong accent. It's wrong to shame princes who speak Malay with an English accent. Just stop.
Malaysia's diverse accents is beautiful.
When you receive a text from a guy saying he wants to rape you, go straight to the police as
@NazmeenAmin
has done. I said "when", rather than "if", because it's quite common.
Guys - just don't, and if you know someone who does - Act! None of this Bro-Code excuse.
I see a lot of Malaysians and Singaporeans complaining about the haze (toxic smoke that blankets South East Asia nearly every year, since 1997 or before). How about doing something about it. Here are some suggestions...:
@ComicsByVieN
Why are they specifically picking on squid game? There’s loads of violent shows. Squid Game far surpasses most for its powerful classist and human behaviour theme.
I’m sorry for my earlier tweet where I was focused on accents, overlooking the privilege that royalty have and the double standards where the rakyat are faulted for not speaking Malay correctly. For the many who pointed this out to me, thank you. Yes, I wasn’t reading the room.
Meanwhile in Malaysia, a well known do-gooder religious preacher has been exposed as a sexual harasser and some people say "I hope it's not true" despite overwhelming evidence made public. 2/
@randomyoko
@TsimBooky1
Wow Yoko. Have you ever met a Malaysian? Every one of us have older family members with stories of the Japanese occupation and they were all horrific. It isn’t propaganda. For Malayans in the 40s, it was real.
To make matters worse, he posts a video of her crying on social media while he applies medicine to her back. What kind of parent is this? An unfit one. The authorities should act.
Tomorrow the highest temperature in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia is 31°C. Malaysians consider this hot.
It's 6.30pm here in Nottingham and I am sitting in 37°C.
This is not normal. It's not ok.
It's a

My teenage daughter explained to me the important “buffer” role that Chris Pine is playing, by sitting between people who won’t or can’t talk to each other. I think we’ve all been Chris Pine at some stage.
My point for Malaysia - carry on with the pressure. Tell the TV/film industry that laughing about rape and objectifying women and female co-stars is completely wrong, harmful and perpetuates rape culture. Advertisers should threaten to pull ads if this isn't addressed....7/
12. After being released from UK jail, Nur Fitri is back in Malaysia and studying at UKM. The fact that many don’t seem to understand the severity of his actions and say he should be given a second chance is worrying. He says he did nothing wrong- that’s a huge RED FLAG.
@UjuAnya
Uju, do listen to what the Asians here and have QT'd you are saying. His portrayal is very very real, as a South Asian working in a richer Asian nation. It's meant as a critique of how Koreans treat migrant workers, and so sensitively done.
@MuizRazakMR
@tashny
People make "outright accusations" when there is no longer trust in the organisation. You need to ask - why do they resort to going public, has our internal reporting system failed?
Employers, like the radio station must also act when they see harmful conduct:
1. Tell the guy it's wrong and why. Train him.
2. Support the target.
3. Educate all employees on sexual harassment/bullying etc.
4. Fire people who continue harassing.
Sharing this to show that so called religious teachers are vile, misogynistic and perpetuate rape culture. Is it any wonder that some Malay men treat women as sexual objects when religious sermons consist of obscene sexually harassing remarks like this?

I didn’t know of him till I saw the video clip. It’s unnerving that’s the first thing he thought when she said she’s 18. My daughter is 18!
If anyone has emerged with any sense of dignity in this whole political mess, it has to be the Malaysian King. How many heads of state would personally serve food to the exhausted media camping outside?
In an unprecedented move, Istana Negara has invited members of the media into the compound for a briefing, without needing to observe the formal dress code.
I’ll remember Mr Ram as we called him, with great fondness. As a law student I did my attachment with him and he was terrifying yes, but what a brilliant mind. One day I sat in the car with him and he had a small chess board which he was playing with and he told me …2/
@1Obefiend
No. No. No.
You know what has gone on too long? Men cracking rape jokes and sexually harassing women.
It's for men to change, call out other men and watch their behaviour.
Don't you DARE put this on women.
I just lost a dear friend to covid. She was a teacher in Sabah. We were room-mates in university. Her death like millions the world over, was so preventable. I feel the need to lash out at governments, at people who say covid-19 is fake. I am sad and angry.
So when people ask what parents did before formula was available, please know that one historical answer to that question was (literally): slavery, rape, forced reproduction, forced breastfeeding labor, & denying early nutrition and care to Black infants. 6/7
@MuizRazakMR
You don't take action against this guy. Rather look at what he has said. As you are a lecturer, you're not independent. The UITM Board needs to take this seriously and engage an independent team to review the UITM culture - interaction between students and staff
@liztai
This is awesome! Also, how is this cultural appropriation when the kompang troop here are clearly Malay and presumably being paid? As long as the culture concerned is represented and not exploited, it's appreciation, not appropriation.
Finally the UK government wants to review the widespread availability of GHB (the date rape drug), when women have been victims of this for years. This is what makes me angry. Things only change when straight men are the victims.
This man shares how he was abused by his ex. Yet, people are laughing. What’s funny about a woman abusing a man? It’s wrong and may be criminal. Shaming a man this way and dismissing his pain is why many male abuse victims stay silent.
@MuizRazakMR
Serious allegations requires a proper investigation into the allegations, not against the people raising it. Is there a whistleblower policy in UITM? How do students and staff raise concerns without fear of retaliation.
I'm writing a chapter for a Malaysian book on why sexual harassment victims don't speak up. I focus on Power Distance -Malaysia is the highest in the world. I want to interview people who were sexually harassed by their boss/person in authority. Will be anonymous. DM me
For all Malaysians who are questioning why the Rohingya children on KL's streets aren't polite (?!!!), read this.
If you want stateless children to be nice, then give them rights to an identity, to education, to healthcare, to safety, security and love.
Our kids only turn away from us when we bully them, when we fail to let them know how happy we are to see them, when we reinforce the terrible cultural messages instead of creating space for their whole selves. They are born loving us. We decide if that continues.
Employers MUST have:
1. Policies
2. Training
3. Safe reporting channels
4. Trauma informed HR & investigators to respond
5. Leaders who understand psychological safety and committed to a safe working environment for ALL genders/races/abilities/ages.
I thought most people understood how wrong this was. Not so. The apologists came out in full force. Oh he’s a maths genius at Imperial college, poor thing. The worst was a guy who called into
@BFMradio
and said, if liberals are ok with porn, why are you upset with child porn?
@Cik_Izah
@MuizRazakMR
But it’s ok for lecturers to have sexual relations/abuse/coercion/ misconduct with students? (Those are the legally correct terms).
@maimrtza
@fatinfarhanaaa
@SistersinIslam
Thanks for tagging me Mai. I wish I was surprised, but this has long been the norm - Religious gaslighting which women buy into (because they believe they'd be going against Islam) - having to obey the husband, no matter what. I've written about this for a publication.
11 elements of an apology. Here's no 4:
"4. Admit that you were wrong.
Say it in your apology. What I did was wrong. Own it. You did this. Your victim didn’t provoke you,...
@maya_karin
You are an influencer and really have the power to encourage people to understand what cultural appropriation is instead of dismissing it offhand. How about understanding how little the Indian community is represented and appreciated in Malaysia?
