Hi

Some people could see this without realising that (as stated in the article) the volunteer took the placebo.
They therefore might decide not to take a safe vaccine.
They could die as a consequence.
Please. Don't.
** SOME PROFESSIONAL NEWS **
On Saturday May 15th I will be saying goodbye to Washington DC and returning home to London
On Monday May 17th I will be saying HELLO to my new role as European economics editor*
*correspondent, really.
@chrislockwd
and
@r_shanbhogue
will edit me
having just spent several minutes literally crying with laughter at the posts on this twitter account, I wish you a good evening
now I must start the cat training regime
Ehem. I have left twitter because I find it makes me unhappy and destroys my ability to concentrate. But I'm back (briefly) to promote a piece I wrote this week on women and econ. A year ago, I wrote this, which explores the problem of economics and women
Some parental newsโฆ late on Friday, Caspar Cecil Keynes-Allies arrived. He and his quite extraordinary mum are now safely at home. Looking forward to starting my embarrassing dad era.
** SOME EXCITING NEWS **
After almost eight wonderful years at The Economist, in July Iโm moving on to join the
@FT
as an economics columnist and podcaster.
๐งต THREAD ๐งต
The economist Robert Solow passed away a couple of weeks ago. So for my column this week I decided to write about... unconditional convergence. The idea that poor countries grow faster than rich ones. Does it happen in the real world?

** JOB ANNOUNCEMENT **
In addition to trade, I'm going to start covering the US economy for The Economist (official job title: US economics editor) and will soon be moving to DC.
** REQUEST FOR RECOMMENDATIONS **
If you were me, what would you be reading/listening to right now?
A thought, which is that Trump seems to think that the Chinese are paying the tariffs because the yuan has depreciated.
You can
(a) claim that tariffs don't hurt because of currency devaluations
OR
(b) complain that currency devaluations are unfair
But probably not BOTH
My special report on the new order of trade argues that trade policy is decreasingly driven by the simple goal of boosting trade/growth and encouraging efficiency. Now other objectives are becoming more important. (1/n)
My latest column for the
@FT
is about a type of model that is infiltrating central banks around the world
Researchers in the Fed, the ECB and the BoE are working to incorporate inequality into models of how the economy works
Let me introduce you to HANK
How important is the $ for global trade?

just going to put it out there that when I started covering trade I was told it would be a boring beat and now I cover the British economy.

CONS: weirdly expensive vegetables, being away from husband/other loved ones, OH MY LORD THE HUMIDITY, guys have you seen your healthcare system, suspicion that at some point I will get shot
PROS: peanut butter cup icecream

Britain trying to join the CPTPP is like falling out with your mate from school and then saying "it's alright I'll be friends with Steve from New Zealand on Facebook instead"
Do you like writing? Do you like economics? Are you a bit of a nerd? Do you want to be my colleague?
WELL.
There's a job opening in
@TheEconomist
's economics team to cover the European economy...
I'm just a girl, standing in front of a boy, desperately trying to shake the vast majority of academia out of an equilibrium in which awful writing is seen as a marker of seriousness
Hello America in general I feel like you have a lot of room for improvement but I tried deep dish pizza for the first time this weekend and there you have done well.
Does monetary policy leave economic scars?
=> New research suggests *yes*
Should monetary policymakers do anything about it right now?
=> Probably *not*
Other policymakers should be paying attention though!
This week I wrote about diversity in economics... We're five years on from the first climate survey. I wanted to know what all the efforts to improve the culture within the field had achieved... ๐งต (1/n)
This is pretty wild. Trump is saying that his steel and aluminum tariffs, which are officially being imposed on "national security" grounds, are actually a response to Canada's milk protectionism.
Global food prices have tumbled, but it will take time for consumers to see the benefits.
"Wheat and other cereal prices have returned to their pre-invasion levels when priced in dollars, but not in many other currencies."

Today is an exciting day for international macro! The world gets to see an
@IMFNews
discussion note, a new working paper, a blog AND a new dataset all on the topic of dominant currency pricing
A friendly reminder that Trump's threat to put tariffs on cars/car parts is of a different order of magnitude to his other actions/threats.
(Since the chart was published the "threatened" categories on steel and aluminium became "imposed".)
Hello! I wrote a piece in
@TheEconomist
about pre-docs and there was MUCH more than I could fit in the piece
(if only the ratio of interview notes to words in the piece was a thing...)
I'm going to attempt a mega-thread over several days.
When
- the plane passengers applaud the pilot upon landing
- the guy at passport control asks if youโre married in a hopeful sort of way
- itโs 1.5 hrs from the airport to your family home up a mountain (via an army checkpoint)

Hello! Were you, like me, wondering about the legality of raising tariffs on Brazil and Argentina?
WELL.
There's an ongoing case where a steel importer filed a complaint against the US govt for raising tariffs on Turkey.
The govt tried to get the case dismissed... and failed.
In this week's issue of

you can read about the life and economics of Sadie Tanner Mossell Alexander, the first African American to get an economics PhD.

The questions we should be asking about the new NAFTA -
1. have the Mexicans agreed to sign a bilateral without Canada?
2. does the agreement rely on any non-NAFTA restrictions implemented via a section 232 investigation?
3. how quickly are the new autos ROOs being phased in?
Whenever anyone says anything about the US joining the CPTPP I simply scream BUT THE RULES OF ORIGIN at them and then they back away slowly.
I am willing to provide this service to the British government.

Thread on women in economics -
A year ago someone told me about a weird thing that happens in the job market for PhD economists. Each year, a few *superstars* are identified - exceptional candidates who the top places fight over.
Ehem. I am going to attempt a tweetstorm:
This was my reaction when I heard about the Trump administration investigating the security threat imposed by cars (1/n)

My piece this week for

A temporary flirtation with insurance for people losing their jobs is now over.
