It seems that OpenAI's Whisper was trained on unofficial subtitles of Arabic movies, and a big problem there is that the Arab culture doesn't care about content quality that much and considers everything an opportunity to advertise and / or soapbox - leading to a weird issue

@SheriefFYI you don't realise that there's a bottom limit of the core engine build, it can't take less memory. but when you build more and more complex apps, this doesn't grow like you'd imagine. for ex. chat apps take around 300mb, which is not that much.

The reason modern games have a terrible bang-per-buck when it comes to VRAM usage is because in D3D11 and earlier there were 128 shader resource slots max, and so for every draw call the system knows which textures it will reference. OS would page textures in and out.
@Dachsjaeger

Not wanting to pick on Diablo 4 only but the way some games have questionable texture quality for VRAM requirements is distressing. Especially since games like The Last of Us and Forspoken both saw huge changes in post-launch patches to up quality while even using less VRAM!

OpenAI's Sora (according to NYTimes) was named after the Japanese word, so it seems a mere coincidence that Sora means either "picture" or "a small religious verse" in Arabic

The games certainly have enough info about which textures might be referenced by which drawcalls, but without actively informing the OS about this via Evict() / MakeResident() everything stays in VRAM all the time and artists end up lowering texture res to hit perf targets.

Where does this idea that native UI frameworks don't have accessibility features come from? People keep repeating it and it sounds like none of them has seen the a11y you get for free when you use AppKit / UIKit or Win32. Has OP ever used a screen reader?
@SheriefFYI Also electron has accessibility features supported and built in. Which you’d have to write yourself in a native C/C++/C# app. Web apps just make more sense in most cases

@d0m96 On a tangent you'd be surprised how many problems faced / caused by multi billion dollar companies can be solved by one (1) competent engineer.

I don't know how anyone gets work done with Outlook, I think it has a net negative value.

Somehow missed that the new @Outlook app doesn't even work when you're offline. Like AT ALL. How is this acceptable?

The new Steam UI has a UX 101 issue: no waiting threshold for hover actions, meaning that if I wanted to click that “Your Store” link I better make my cursor take the long way around as the “Community” menu is now the UI equivalent of a landmine.

The idea about saving time and money isn't entirely honest, as it's about saving _the developer's_ time and money. The user's time waiting for swapping from disk on other apps is an externality that is none of their concern.

@bendrbang @SheriefFYI Nothing. Memory is cheap and easily available, we don’t have to super optimise everything anymore, which saves time and money.

An interesting test with games is how fast can it go - if your game is running on OP hardware at 640x480 rendering a scene with nothing but one light and a spinning cube, can it reach 1000 FPS? Figuring out why not leads to very interesting understandings about your code.

I think there's something wrong with modern gaming - I've been trying out older games that I've never played before (so no nostalgia) and a lot of them are legit better and way more focused if I can say that - modern games have me distracted with a million things...
