@kirbyalt45 It's a bit more limited, but it's a great engine for quick-and-dirty projects. If you're looking for something you have a lot more control over, codewise, VX Ace and onwards are probably the way to go.

There's a certain magic to small indie games ten years ago that I miss. We were a lot more amenable to smaller passion projects back then, no matter how amateurish they looked. I feel like now a game has to look gorgeous to stand a chance. I miss when we embraced "ugly" games.

I think one of RPG Maker's greatest accomplishments is how its framework embraces a format of RPG that's 20+ years past cultural relevance, almost single-handedly keeping it alive in and in collective memory in gamedev spaces when almost every major studio has moved away.

Been playing an indie RPG called Absinthia and I'm liking it a lot. It has a lot of personality to it compared to some of its contemporaries, and it scratches that Lufia 1 + 2 itch in a great way. Definitely worth a look.

I can't unsee it now but someone pointed out one of autotiles on the forests in FF4PR is a grass tile. I though it was supposed to be a leaf texture at first but upon closer inspection, it looks like the tile literally is a missing 8x8 square space.

If you're trying RPG Maker for the first time, just know: It is okay to play around with the default assets to get used to how the engine works. I know everyone's eager to make their Funny Little Game, but I really don't recommend jumping in with custom assets immediately.

I think there's a lot of pressure for indie devs to reinvent the wheel or do something that hasn't been done before. It's a metric we measure indie games on far too heavily. Making something familiar is still okay, especially if it's the game you want to make.
