Contrails stop forming for the same reason clouds have edges. The plane has flown into a region of air (warmer, or less humid) where contrail formation is not possible. This is especially noticeable with aerodynamic contrails like this, as they are more sensitive to conditions.

UFO hunting technology proposals might want to reconsider the focus on super-zoom cameras. Hard to use, expensive, won't help much at night. Focus on triangulation. 2 or 3 cheap full-sky stations separated by around 2km would let you get a 3D motion track, with speed. UFO proof.

This sums up the current state of UFOlogy. A person with what seems like relevant experience and access claims to know that aliens are visiting us. But the only evidence he has is people like him telling him things. Then he tells other people. It's a circular echo chamber.
