— I read a lot of court records because I like a good story. Won a Pulitzer that one time. “A well-known PACER watcher” - Justice Department
“The federal court system produces thousands of pages of documents every single week. The indictments, detention memos and criminal complaints can reveal plenty of important information. But the problem is, almost no one reads them.
Seamus Hughes does.”
A Texas city with 250 people has 50 sworn police officers — half of which had been suspended, demoted or fired from their previous jobs — and they wrote tickets worth more than $1 million last year, Jeremy Rogalski reported.
A few days after allegedly telling a roomful of reporters they need to do more local
stories about corruption, the Baltimore Suns rolls out two stories about the new boss’s local political donations.
I came across an interesting unreported case in Texas today. The great reporting crew at BLaw wrote it up.
(Also has my first Bloomberg contribution line too, very excited)
The Justice Department has charged an Arizona man, David Hanson with making death threats to President Biden and VP Harris. Also allegedly threatening a mass shooting at the University of New Mexico.
Any new organization that picks up LaPorta in the next month, I’ll provide a free PACER training for your newsroom, PACER story support for the newsroom for two weeks, and at least one court record scoop.
I just got laid off. One would expect to learn this news from their employer but instead,

employees learned of it via

He’s gonna hate this thread but I’m not being dramatic when I say Noah is the only reason I’m a journalist. 5 years ago, I sent him a DM asking if a backwater terrorism academic could write for his publication about something that had nothing to do with terrorism. / 🧵
After two and a half amazing years at Rolling Stone, I’m stepping down as editor-in-chief as of March 1. It’s the right decision, one Gus Wenner and I made after many discussions about the direction of the brand. (1/3)
It’s been relatively quietly flying under the radar but Jan 6th investigators have arrested dozens of individuals in the last two weeks. As of tonight, at least 1,066 people have been arrested publicly for crimes related to Jan 6th
There was a previously unreported arrest in California. The charging documents paint a wild picture of law enforcement impersonations, bomb threats that shut down city halls, spoofed Congressman's phones, & phony search warrants filed in districts around the country. A thread
I tried three news sites in Montana looking for a byline on a story related to the fire department to give a local reporter a tip. No luck. Anyway, your fire chief got arrested for Jan 6th charges.
Also the Seattle reporters may recognize the name
Let’s do this: If you were a reporter laid off by the far too many cuts in the last month, shoot me a DM for a free hour training on how to find stories on PACER. Let’s add a training bullet to the resume to make it slightly stronger for the places you apply in the future.

But the number always seemed confusing to me. Because it both never changes and then changes so dramatically. So I dove in. Page 24 of a Government Accountability Office report released last week said that the FBI had 9,049 domestic terrorism cases.
A Court Watch scoop — authorities have arrested a North Carolina woman in Utah for alleging laundering 92 million dollars in drug money for cartels through a Chinese money laundering operation.

The Justice Department have charged Arther Graham in Alaska of threatening a US Senator.
“He admitted that he had stated in his email to United States Senator 1 that he would take her flesh off, use it as a coat, and live inside of her.”
I’m begging you local TV reporters, put your email on your bio. After searching in vain for a tip line of three local stations, I’ve given up trying to tell any Montana reporter about a new federal charge that would lead their news broadcast
If you were a LATimes reporter laid off today, a reminder that Court Watch is commissioning paid reporting pieces. Use it as a bridge till you land at more permanent gig.

Last message I got from Senator Lieberman summed him up perfectly as a boss. He gave a lot of us a shot on Capitol Hill that we didn’t deserve and took a chance, even if he never thought he did.
May has memory be a blessing.
One last note. My experience is the reason why I respond to every reporter (big or small outlets) request for help. Someone took the time to help me when they didn’t have to. I have an obligation to pay it forward.
Just filed: "A Chinese-American defense lab manager was charged with stealing thousands of secret files from a US military contractor that develops sophisticated infrared sensors vital to the country’s ability to detect and track incoming...missiles"

I had a very untraditional path into reporting. I never went to j school but pushed my way into journalism in the last five years by having a unique skill set (PACER). I’ve worked with news organizations big and small. Some takeaways 🧵
The story is here. And it’s one of the proudest bylines I’ve had in my career. News deserts are happening too often in America. Stories are not seeing the light of day. If you can pitch in to inform the public, you have a responsibility to.
update: the fbi has contacted me about this article. i still haven't been able to have a meaningful conversation with a human being at

and city hall in Boston. The later bomb threat was made on the ninth anniversary of the Boston marathon and resulted in the evacuation of city hall. Iagnounov spoofed the phone number of Congressman Eugene Wu’s office to call in the threat at the Nevada airport.
When contacted, the NSA officer denied knowing Iagnounov and the FBI believes he got her contact information from an NSA code breaker challenge email she sent to students.
Doing this for two decades, I know I’ll now have students that weren’t alive during 9/11 and will have to explain the significance but the thought of having students where I have to explain why bin Laden is bad is next level.
Court records say he also filed a freedom of information act request to the FBI, falsely stating it was from Carson City Sheriff Kenneth Furlong. The sheriff was in charge of the law enforcement agency that arrested Iagnounov & the forged FOIA document requested FBI visitor logs
Authorities say he registered a site, usoig dot us to file. It is not clear if some of those attempts were successful, but FBI says that in at least 2 instances, a federal clerk’s office was able to prevent the false filings by doing due diligence on discrepancies in the docs

A few months after that, the FBI says Iagnounov faxed letters purportedly being from other local law enforcement departments announcing the death of Furlong and a fake FBI wanted poster of the sheriff.
In July 2022, court filings say Iagnounov created and attempted to file federal search warrants under the name of real federal law enforcement agents in federal court districts in Georgia, California, Virginia, Florida, Indiana, Utah, and New York.
Since Noah took a chance of an academic who slid into his DMs, I’ve worked for the NYTimes, Bloomberg, rolling stone, messenger. I’ve helped reporters in literally every news room in America. I did it because Noah believed in me.
