On this day 65 years ago, Alan Turing (41) killed himself. He had played a pivotal role in WWII by cracking German enigma codes, thus saving millions of lives. In thanks the British state chemically castrated him for being gay.
Words cannot express what we all owe to Alan Turing
Let’s be clear BBC, Alan Turing’s life and career weren’t ‘overshadowed by his homosexuality’, they were overshadowed by Alan’s treatment by the state because of his homosexuality.
So a friend just told me that for the first time there were protesters outside his church on Sunday in Edinburgh.
They were protesting because the church is LGBT inclusive.
Something very bad and very dangerous seems to be happening.
Growing up gay in 90s Scotland. It was a sin.
I worked everyday for 25 years to change that.
Then the anti-trans mob came along and they throw the same insults & rhetoric I heard growing up.
For everything I longed to do, no matter when or where or who…it’s once again a sin.
They are attacking pride events.
They are protesting queer bars.
They are storming Drag shows.
The are calling for us to be rounded up.
They are calling for us to be killed.
Every bit of progress we’ve made is at risk, and so are we.
We lost a generation of LGBT+ folk to the AIDS crisis.
We lost a generation of LGBT+ folk to Section 28.
That’s why LGBT+ folk and our allies will not allow another generation of LGBT+ folk to be lost to an anti-trans culture war.
Our lives are worth more than your ignorance.
Everything they said about LGB people in the 80s they are now saying about trans people.
They shouldn’t get to use our changing rooms
They’re doing it to abuse us
They’re not real women/men
They’re turning or kids gay
It wasn’t true then, and it’s not true now. Be smarter.
Growing up gay in the 90s you were made to feel like a criminal. The media frequently and deliberately conflated the worst of us to tell the world all of us were the same. To see the wizard lady doing it all again to trans people brings back just how vile a tactic it was.
Teachers outing LGBT kids to parents before they are ready is wrong and will impact on kids ability to feel safe and supported at school.
It’s wrong to out gay kids. It’s wrong to out bi kids. It’s wrong to out trans kids.
It’s wrong.
To all the teenage gays watching

Hey Keir, you should know this but kids don’t suddenly become LGBTQ+ on their 18th or 21st birthdays. Making life difficult for LGBTQ+ kids doesn’t stop them being who they are, but it does stop them living their best lives, and sometimes in too many cases living at all.
Four gay men, lost to hatred in four months. Murdered for being gay.
10th April Andile ‘Lulu’ Ntuthela 40 South Africa
23rd April Normunds Kindzulis 29 Latvia
4th May Alireza Fazeli Monfared 20 Iran
3rd July Samuel Luiz 24 Spain
Say their names, remember them, keep fighting.
We lost an entire generation to homophobia
When we tried to recover, we lost a generation to AIDS
When we tried to recover, they hit us with section 28 and we lost more
I won’t lose a generation to transphobia, we cannot - will not let that happen
United we can beat the hate
As a gay kid growing up in the 90s I was told I’d made a choice, that I didn’t know my own mind, that I was making a terrible mistake that would kill me.
It’s the same arguments now used against trans people.
It’s not homophobia to support trans people, quite the opposite.
I’m a proud gay man.
Trans people living their best lives doesn’t erase who I am.
The irony of the few gay men who are screaming erasure because someone else is being themself is that’s precisely what some straight people used to say about us.
Did you learn nothing?
The BBC v Irish News.
A campaigner who quite clearly states that she is no feminist and only ever campaigns against the rights of trans people.
BBC “women’s rights”
Irish News “anti-trans”
If Australia can call it out, if New Zealand can, if NI can - we can too.
Coming out as gay nearly tore me apart. I tried to take my own life.
After, I didn’t want anyone else to suffer like I did, and for nearly two decades I’ve worked for equality for LGBTQ people.
To be called ‘not gay’ and homophobic because I’m trans inclusive is downright sick.
What they said,
Decriminalisation: Danger to other men
Repeal Section 28: Danger to children
Marriage Equality: Danger to the family
Ban conversion therapy: Danger to parents
Gender recognition: Danger to women
LGBTQ+ people have quite literally heard it all before.
We lost a generation of LGBTQ+ people to HIV/Aids crisis.
We lost a generation of LGBTQ+ people to Section 28
I’ll be damned if we’re losing another generation to this anti-trans moral panic.
Let us live.
Nicola Sturgeon has been clear with Scots on the importance of hand washing for 20 seconds.
So here’s Nicola Sturgeon, First Minister of Scotland as handwash. A thread.
Protests outside LGBT inclusive churches. The first anti-lgbt protests at Glasgow Pride for many years. LGBT hate crime up. Groomer narrative in almost daily discourse. I’m worried.
There we have it leading anti-trans activist calls
#Pride
a gathering of “fetishists, perverts and paedophiles”.
Don’t be in ANY doubt that these people aren’t coming for gay rights next. Our trans siblings need our support now, time to join the fightback.
Your reminder: not a single poll supported the repeal of Section 28. That's because a millionaire and the media collaborated to create a moral panic. Now the vast majority of the public are horrified that they ever treated LGBT people that way.
LGBT ppl: Misgendering isn’t a hate crime
Scot Gov: Misgendering isn’t a hate crime
Anti-trans ppl: Arrest us for misgendering!
Police Scotland: No. Misgendering isn’t a hate crime
Anti-trans ppl: Victory!
Also anti-trans ppl: They should have told us this.
We lost so many LGBTQ+ people to the silence of Section 28 and then they spent two decades saying sorry.
Their sorry was meaningless and now they have once again decided to silence the next generation of LGBTQ+ people.
We must be their voice.
The Hungarian Parliament has today passed by 157–1 an anti-LGBT+ propaganda law which would put Section 28 to shame.
The ‘portrayal or promotion’ of homosexuality or gender reassignment are now banned.

Absolutely disgusting to see a bisexual politician abused on the streets of Scotland like this. All the progress we’ve made as LGBTQ+ people used as fodder for a hateful culture war.

I’ve lost count of the number of people who’ve sincerely entered the trans rights ‘debate’ believing that if we all have a nice chat and be ‘more respectful’ it’ll all be fine.
They honestly think they’re the first to suggest it, and that it wasn’t the first approach we tried.
I’ve been fighting for LGBTQ+ equality since I was in my teens. I’ve campaigned against millionaires & media moguls, homophobic politicians to ignorant boxers. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more hateful group than some of the anti-trans mob. I’ve never known such hatred.
As a kid I feared gay men. We were all primed to believe they were a threat and shouldn’t be allowed in changing rooms or near children.
It was a pernicious lie that made my own coming out so much harder.
I’ll not sit back as the same lie is weaponised against trans people.

At what age did you know you were LGBTQ+?
I definitely was not an adult.
And if there had not been Section 28 I might have got the support I needed too.
The people saying to be accepted LGB people should simply ditch trans people seem to forget that’s what we were told to do about the ‘camp ones’, the bi’s, the ‘too butch’, the ‘flaunters’
We’ve heard it all before and we know what you do to anyone left behind
So the answers no
Very glad to hear
@NicolaSturgeon
confirm that the UK Government’s Section 35 order to block the Scottish GRR Bill will be challenged in the courts. “We will defend it”
“Leaving kids alone” is the assumption that all kids grow up straight until some become gay. I knew I was different from my friends in primary school, I just didn’t know what to call it. Section 28 meant I didn’t find out until I was 16 by which time it was a badge of shame.
I hear the hateful homophobic accusation of pedo and groomer more now than I ever have, oddly by people claiming to support my rights as a gay man. They are working with those who hate us to destroy our movement. They will fail.
I’m a gay man - I fancy other men. After a millennium of criminalisation and only half a century of decriminalisation the only threat to me being gay is from homophobes.
Screaming that trans men diminish your ‘same-sex attraction’ when it takes nothing away from you is garbage.

In the rising tide of hate now being felt by LGBTQ+ people, the BBC reports this like it’s not in part responsible, like it hasn’t platformed anti-LGBTQ+ voices, like it hasn’t banned employees from pride, like it hasn’t attacked LGBTQ+ orgs.
Consequences

It saddens me that this is the point we’ve reached, where anti-trans campaigners are rampaging though the feminist movement attacking any women or women’s orgs (inc. rape crisis) who are inclusive of all women. They have achieved what the enemies of feminism could only dream of.
Oh yeah and what you’ll see next is they array of Russian bots, anonymous and pond scum who disagree, who never once lifted a finger for ‘gay rights’ who for whom I the veteran of all the rights they hold am the ‘wrong un’. Frauds all of them.
This sums up the so called ‘LGB Alliance’ perfectly: A straight man telling LGBTQ people what they should think about a group that claims gay kids don’t exist, supports conversion therapy and has railed against inclusive education. Stick your ‘care and compassion’ James.
Hands up if you support
@stonewalluk

@LGBTConsortium
and the over 200 LGBT+ organisations who were forced to pull out of the UK Gov’s pinkwashing conference when they decided trans people didn’t deserve legal protections from torture?
It wasn’t us who threw that money away.
There were a few gay men who believed that to win decriminalisation they should ditch the gay men they considered to be too camp or flaunting their homosexuality.
They were wrong and we won equality together.
Sadly some still think so narrowly, but this time about trans people.
If in your rush to attack the SNP you end up attacking >100 LGBTQ+ orgs, groups & prides that fought for this law - while winning the praise of vehemently anti-trans folk who fought tooth & nail against, then it is in fact you setting back LGBTQ+ rights.

Sadly there have always been gay men who’ve worked against LGBT equality. A small number of gay men activity fought marriage equality, adoption rights, even decriminalisation itself.
They are a tiny minority, but those who oppose our LGBT equality platform them ad nauseam.
On this day 68 years ago, Alan Turing (41) died by suicide. He had played a pivotal role in WWII, cracking German enigma codes, thus saving millions of lives.
The British state had punished him for being gay using chemical castration as conversion therapy.
He was a hero.
My filters are quite good so I never spotted this until it was sent to me.
Apparently I’ve set the clock back by decades and have blood on my hands.
I couldn’t be more proud of the work I’ve done in nearly two decades of fighting. These people would tear down all that progress.
I knew I was gay before I was 18 as did so many gay people.
Sexual orientation and gender identity don’t just switch on your 18th Birthday, neither should recognition or support.
At school I was taught by teachers who weren’t allowed to be gay, weren’t allowed to talk about you being gay, gay curriculum content banned, and kids who’d batter you if they even thought you might be.
I’m still gay.
You can’t make people gay. Neither can the magic Drag Queen.
I’m gay
It doesn’t mean I’m a paedo. I’m not a groomer. I’m not trying to perv on blokes in the changing room. When I campaign for equality I’m not trying to get things you don’t already have. When I fight for trans rights, I remember the people who fought for me
I’m not sorry
Breaking: The Scottish Census WILL be the most LGBT inclusive in history after a legal challenge has failed. The judge ruled guidance that tells trans men and trans women that they can respond with the answer that corresponds with how they live their lives, is lawful.
The battle to end Section 28 in Scotland was turned into a nightmare for many LGBT Scots when a millionaire relentlessly peddled scare stories, misinformation and hatred.
20 years later and history is repeating itself.
We seen off one together, we’ll see off the other too.

People forget.
We’re the first generation of LGBTQ+ people to get married, to adopt, to be protected in the workplace and from hate crimes.
The generation before were the first to escape criminalisation.
We’re not going to give that up easily, no matter what the haters want.
I’ve fought for LGBTQ equality my entire adult life. I’ve had my fair share of attacks, threats, smears.
I haven’t seen since Section28 the level of abuse that the followers of ForWomenScot have been dishing out, since they continue to repeatedly target me online.
This is EXACTLY what they used to say about gay kids in Schools. In fact they even brought in Section 28 to make sure of it.
These people spent 20 years saying sorry, but it’s clear they meant not one word of it.
Being trans is not an illness. This isn’t just my view, it’s the view of the experts at the World Health Organisation.
To keep ‘a medical diagnosis’ as a prerequisite of a gender recognition certificate is far from world leading, it’s antiquated gatekeeping.
As you read THAT abhorrent BBC anti-trans article today remember it’s exactly what they said about us.
For years gay ppl faced accusations that we wanted to force ourselves on straight ppl. It was a way to dehumanise and present us as a threat.
It wasn’t true, it’s not true.
We get to decide who we tell we’re LGBTQ+. Why? Because we’ve learned the hard way what rejection of who we are looks like.
Taking that away from us is not an attempt to protect us. It’s another attempt to try to deny who we are.
Fran Unsworth telling the
@BBC
’s LGBT staff to “get used to hearing views we don’t like” is sickening
We hear those words when we’re getting our heads kicked in. We’ve heard them in the playground, and the workplace
We were hearing them less. We thought the BBC was safe for us
A reminder: gay people don’t have poorer mental health because we’re gay
We don’t have higher suicide rates because we’re gay
We’re not attacked in the street because we’re gay
We’re not bullied at school because we’re gay
All of these things are because of homophobia. End it
Relentless abuse, getting repeatedly targeted by ForWomenScot, called a pervert, padeo, misogynist, liar - but its days like today that makes it bearable. My wee org winning a big victory in the courts and polling that shows (what I already know) a majority favour trans equality.
I’m not going to mince my words here. LGBTQ+ people in Scotland are under attack from an increasingly vocal group of bigots. Take action to protect yourself.
We are very sorry to say that today’s Drag Queen Storytime event was unable to go ahead because of the hateful and intimidatory behaviour of a small number of people online, which led to the performer feeling unsafe. (1/3)
Stonewall: Works behind the scenes for months with the Gov and other LGBT charities to get LGBT Afghans airlifted to safety.
LGB Alliance: Attacks Stonewall.
We all know what is happening here.
When I first started campaigning for LGBT equality I remember some heterosexual men angry that they were... erm heterosexual.
“I’m not heterosexual” they’d say until they realised what it meant. Then they’d moan about why ‘normal’ people need to be called anything at all.
Eight years I’ve been working on this (with amazing colleagues). Eight years to help support a tiny group of marginalised people to be able to change a bit of paperwork with some dignity.
Regardless of the outcome I don’t think I can ever forgive the UK Gov.
You’re going to hear a lot of people today telling you that a ban on conversion therapy for LGB makes sense, while exactly the same thing for trans people doesn’t. It’s lies.
You cannot change someone’s sexual orientation or gender identity, by torture or otherwise.
Anti-trans folk in my mentions telling me as a man I need to butt out of discussions on trans issues
Er, no
I know that’s exactly what you want, to isolate a tiny minority so you can strip them of their dignity with impunity
Also, as a gay man, I know I’m next
Not a chance
So the Times which has week in week out run the most relentlessly attacking coverage of trans issues in the name of protecting women & girls has come out in FAVOUR of repealing

It’s almost like they had another agenda entirely.
