Some news: Tonight is my last game as the Capitals’ beat writer for The Washington Post. I’m excited for what is next and am forever grateful for the support. I’ll still be around through the ASG, but after that I’ll be off to start a new chapter!!
Some officially official news ~ I’m the new Washington Capitals beat reporter for The Washington Post.
It’s a position I’m so thankful and grateful to be in. Hockey fans, I hope you’ll follow along!
Expecting Alex Ovechkin to be available to media in the coming days. He was requested this AM, but Caps want to keep the focus on tonight’s game vs NYR.
Ovechkin wants further time before speaking on Russia’s attack on Ukraine.
Ovechkin’s wife, kids, mom + dad are in Russia.
Alex Ovechkin will try to tie/pass Gordie Howe (801) for 2nd all-time on the goals list tonight vs DAL.
“My son ask me today, ‘Dad, how did you score three goals in Chicago?’”
“This my job,” Ovechkin told him.
Kirill Kaprizov used a right-handed stick for his Ovechkin impression in the breakaway challenge.
Kuznetsov helped him tape the stick how Ovechkin does it and wrote Ovi’s name on it.
Oshie on Ovechkin being physical early: “If the big man is hittin -- and I guess everyone has got less games than him, less experience, less GOAT-ness -- ... you better be hitting too. He is going to drag everyone else along with him. He wears the ‘C’ for a reason."
Alex Ovechkin on Kirill Kaprizov's tribute to him during the breakaway challenge during All-Star Weekend:
"I think it's pretty cool. I think it was fun. I don't know why he don't get too many points. What is the referee doing out there?"
Just doing some goal math … Alex Ovechkin (730 goals) can average 33 goals per season for the next five seasons to break Wayne Gretzky’s goal record (894).
Kirill Kaprizov pleasing a lot of Capitals fans today. First, he revealed he named his cat, Kuzy, after Evgeny Kuznetsov.
Next, he pays tribute to Alex Ovechkin by wearing his jersey at the breakaway challenge, doing his Gatorade bottle routine and his signature hot stick celly.
Was chatting with Trevor Zegras and he summed up Alex Ovechkin pretty well:
“I’ve always been an Ovi fan just because he’s the best. He’s crazy, he doesn’t care what he says, he doesn’t care who he says it to. If we could have more Ovi’s, we should.”
Alex Ovechkin, in talking about the Caps core and how the team hasn’t won a playoff series since it won the Cup in 2018:
“A kinda fucked up situation.”
Alex Ovechkin, on the news of Kobe Bryant:
"It's tough you know, because I know him. He always treat me well when he saw me. You know, it's hard. He was a legend in the basketball world and the whole world, and it is tough. Still can't believe it."
T.J. Oshie said wants to stay in DC, when asked about Seattle: "I signed an 8-year deal here because this is where I want to spend the rest of my career and retire here ... I've approached every day since I've been here like this is going to be the last team I will ever play for"
Ilya Samsonov said he was close to crying when he heard the chants of “Sammy! Sammy!” at Capital One Arena today.
He said was nervous in the beginning of the game but settled in, was a “fun” experience.
T.J. Oshie hat trick. ENG.
Big group hug forming by the Capitals bench around Oshie. Special moment here. Playing in his first game since his father passed away.
Hendrix Lapierre with a lot of family in the crowd tonight for his NHL debut: mother, father, sister, brother, grandmother, grandfather and his girlfriend.
And they all got to see his first NHL goal.
Capitals are in a group huddle on the ice. Laviolette just announced to the group that Vitek Vanecek was named the league's Rookie of the Month. Big cheers and pats all around.
No OT this time, but thanks to everyone for following along during my second season on the Capitals' beat!
Will have plenty more content as the days/weeks/months unfold during what should be a busy offseason for Washington.
Sergei Ovechkin predicted Carl Hagelin was going to score tonight.
Hagelin: "Sergei Ovechkin actually called it yesterday. He got a bobblehead from me and he told Ovi that I was going to score and then Ovi told me this morning. You have to listen to the little guy."
Favorite quote in here from Ovechkin:
“Lots of people said, ‘This organization and this guy are never going to win. So, how I say? Suck it. We did it.”
Fun fact: Wild F Kirill Kaprizov named his cat, Kuzy, after Evgeny Kuznetsov.
Kaprizov first followed Kuznetsov’s career + Orlov + Tarasenko, when he watched them play in World Juniors in Quebec.
“I love how skilled he is, how well he thinks about the game” - Kirill on Kuzy
Backstrom on Holtby: "I hate to see he had a tough night but we all know what he has done for our organization, for our club, for our fans. He's a good friend of a lot of guys on the team. I think everyone loves him."
Alex Ovechkin was asked about what happened on Eakin's goal (Ovechkin fell which led to the turnover then the goal).
Tom Wilson interjected before Ovechkin could answer first: "Shit happens, babe.”
Capitals forward Tom Wilson will make his season debut tomorrow (Sunday) against Columbus. He is coming back from offseason ACL surgery.
As previously announced, this means Wilson AND Nicklas Backstrom (hip) are back in the lineup tomorrow.
Anyways, a lot more stories and tweets to come, but thanks to everyone who made my first year on the Capitals beat an amazing experience. Not sure when I'll be back in an arena, but even for a bit, amid all the craziness, it was a blast.
Ovechkin on the Nats at the game tonight: "They going to have beers, they going to have lots of chicken wings and nachos. They deserve it. That's pretty cool. We very happy for guys, for the whole city, for fans, for this area. They was in the fight and they finished the fight."
Vitek Vanecek is back with the Capitals.
WSH acquires Vanecek from Seattle for a 2023 second-round pick (acquired from Winnipeg in the Brenden Dillon trade).
Alex Ovechkin has scored his 800th career goal, becoming just the third player in NHL history to reach that milestone.
With his hat trick tonight in Chicago, he is now one goal away from tying Gordie Howe (801) for second on the all-time goals list.
Hiiii from Toronto! I’ll be covering the Capitals postseason run on the ground here in Canada.
Follow along for all your Caps updates, as well as updates from my mandatory 14-day quarantine, which starts, uh now.
