Patrick Mahomes was intercepted six times as a high school senior.
So I had a goal this week: Track down all six men.
On the mission to find them, a plot eclipsed by their stories, and a peek into his Mahomes' time in high school and its lasting impact:
Gabe Wallace, a sophomore at Shawnee Mission East, heard the gunshots and hopped a barricade, scraping head on the concrete. He lost track of his friends.
On what he was thinking? “My friends are dead.”
Said Andy Reid hugged him. “He trying to comfort me.”
Lisa Lopez-Galvan, shot and killed last week following the Chiefs parade, was wearing a Harrison Butker jersey that afternoon. The family requested a new one to place with her. Butker had one delivered to the funeral home this week. Here's his statement on it:
COLUMN: A bad week for journalism in Kansas City.
Worse for human decency.
The fabricated stories and incessant social media harassment toward Patrick Mahomes — and particularly his fiancee — represent the worst of us.
“I’m telling you this because I want someone else who has gone through it to understand it’s not just them. This is a real thing, and some of us out here are dealing with it, man.”
Danny Duffy reveals his battle with mental illness. Here's his story:
"Bro, I was depressed. Heartbroken.”
Tyrann Mathieu met me at a New Orleans cafe, where he says he would’ve signed Justin Reid's deal had the Chiefs offered it.
We talked football, life, social media, chasing happiness and the human side of NFL business:
After today:
Travis Kelce: 1,250 yards
D.K. Metcalf: 1,180 yards
Tyreek Hill: 1,158 yards
Travis Kelce is three games shy of becoming the first TE in NFL history to lead the league in yards.
Patrick Mahomes: “I’ve played seven years in the National Football League and never had offensive offsides called.”
“You want until a minute left to make a call like that?”
Mahomes said he asked three refs for an explanation. Got none.
“Let us play the game.”
The Sneed family history is murder convictions, drug arrests and generational imprisonment.
L’Jarius is the man chosen to break a curse.
It’s a weight. “The childhood trauma I went through is messing with my head.”
The story behind a rising Chiefs star:
Patrick Mahomes leads a game-winning drive in overtime.
After he led a game-tying drive in 13 seconds.
After he led a go-ahead drive in the final two minutes.
Patrick Mahomes (during a TV interview at the Pro Bowl) on last week’s loss: “I’m still not over it. I don’t think I’ll be over it until we’re playing in another Super Bowl. I’ll have to use that as motivation going forward.”
Patrick Mahomes on the Raiders’ standing on the Chiefs logo pregame: You don’t want people coming into your stadium and disrespecting what you’ve built.
Rashee Rice had the first deep pattern catch of his career yesterday. The story behind it? He ran the wrong route — on purpose — after spotting something in the defense.
"Something a lot of rookies don't do."
On one of the Chiefs' biggest developments:
Rob Gronkowski on Travis Kelce: "One thing that’s very intriguing about Travis Kelce, and I’ve never really seen this with any other player in the NFL ever before, is that Kelce gets better every single year that I’ve seen him play in the NFL."
Patrick Mahomes had surgery today to repair a turf toe injury. The operation was deemed a success. He'll be fully ready by training camp, source tells The Star.
Mahomes has 7 INT
--2 through Tyreek Hill's arms
--1 off Marcus Kemp's shoulder pads
--1 by a defensive lineman on a quick pass
--3 desperate 3rd-down heaves to avoid pressure/punts
I get that the total number is alarming. The full picture is not.
Christian Braun: You come to Kansas to play big games but you don’t come to Kansas to play in the Elite Eight. You don’t come to play in the Final Four. You come to Kansas to win a national championship.
"Just please breathe."
The story of how Andy Reid comforted a frantic teen inside Union Station after a shooting at the Chiefs rally (w/

Asked Mahomes if him counting to four was about his NFL Top-100 ranking. "I think I had four touchdowns at that point," he said, with an obvious smile.
Some sad news to share: TQ Harrison, the oldest brother of Chiefs cornerback L'Jarius Sneed, was killed last night in their hometown of Minden, Louisiana. Sneed, in this story he shared last month, credited Harrison with raising him until he was 6 years old.
The Sneed family history is murder convictions, drug arrests and generational imprisonment.
L’Jarius is the man chosen to break a curse.
It’s a weight. “The childhood trauma I went through is messing with my head.”
The story behind a rising Chiefs star:
CBS says that with more than 50 million viewers, the Chiefs-Bills game is the most watched NFL Divisional Round game ever and the most-watched program of any kind since last year's Super Bowl.
I’d tweet about Patrick Mahomes throwing a 20-yard behind the back pass to Clyde Edwards-Helaire, but you’d probably want video, which we aren’t allowed to shoot during this period. So I’ll hold off.
Asked Clark Hunt about pursuing a renovated Arrowhead Stadium rather than a new venue with a roof: "As a family and organization, we're a big believer in playing football outside ...There's just something about Arrowhead that would be irreplaceable no matter how good the design."
Aaron Rodgers in Nov. 2021: "Health should not be political."
Aaron Rodgers in Oct. 2023: Let's have a debate on the vaccine, and I'll bring this guy running for president along with me.
Chris Jones signing autographs tonight at Dick’s in Leawood. They can’t keep the line moving because he keeps starting conversations with everyone to pass through. One fan said, “thanks for bringing it home.” He replied, “We got more in us.”
When the Chiefs got the ball with less than 30 seconds left before halftime last week, Eric Fisher turned to Kelechi Osemele and said, "Watch this," referring to Mahomes and the offense. Sure enough, they got a FG before the half.
