“The gardener cannot actually “grow” tomatoes, squash, or beans. She can only foster an environment in which the plants do so.”
Sounds like player development.
We don’t “make” players better. We CREATE environments that allow them to flourish.
#TeamOfTeams
Winning isn’t everything until:
You get benched
Get cut
Lose your job
Get released
Get beat
-Win each rep
-Win each moment
Because at some point,
WINNING MATTERS.
Make it important, before it’s important.
Hear it all the time:
“One more”
“End on a good one”
BUT-
There may be more benefit from having to work through the “failure” between rounds than “feeling good” after each.
After all, isn’t that how the game works at times?
We have to live with our last one.
Practice it.
Key distinctions:
Working Hard vs Being a Hard Worker
Playing Pro Ball vs Being a Pro Player
Winning vs Being a Winner
Getting grades vs Being a true student
Getting hits vs Being a Hitter
One = situational (outcome based)
One = way of life (process based)
#Values
Instead of SAYING:
“This player (team) isn’t buying in.”
Try ASKING:
“How can I adjust the environment to make it more engaging?”
- Placing blame will sink you.
- Ownership will catapult you.
4:00 am: Twin baby 1 wakes up hungry
5:30 am: Twin baby 2 wakes up hungry
6:00 am: 4yr old wakes up and says, “Hey dad.. let’s count to INFINITY”
We’re at 147... this may be a longer morning than expected
SKILLS transfer to competition (not drills).
Develop skillED athletes by challenging:
- mechanics
- decision making
- mental strength
- athleticism
- adjustability
- ..
Game isn’t won by executing drills perfect in a cage/INF/bullpen.
Game is won by best problem solvers.
My 4yr old: Daddy, how do you say blankie in Spanish?
Me: Hmm. I don’t know that one. Hey, Siri, “how do you say blanket in Spanish?
Siri: “Manta”
4yr old: Hahaha, dad! Siri knew and you didn’t!
Me: Well, Siri can’t hit a fastball. So...
“Let’s set up the L-Screen 45ft away and throw 50 mph. Make sure you throw it down the middle! That way our guys can work on their swings.”
Yeah, because that’s how the game is 👇🏻👇🏻
A nice reminder there IS good going on in the world! Sometimes you need to seek it out and others times it’s right in front of you!
Landon and Lane Larkin came on Wed.
Life in the purist form.
All is well and all are healthy!
Practice design should fit YOUR players NEEDS.
Trying to mimic what the other program/facility/organization is doing may be setting your players back.
-Gather concepts.
-Individualize the implementation.
-Track/Assess/Adjust
Coaches: Unless the athletes you coach are getting PAID by an organization as an employee, they’re AMATURES.
As miscues in practice and games happen, let’s not forget that.
Coaches job is create environments that allow athletes to IMPROVE, not ridicule when mistakes are made.
A COMMITED person will always WORK HARD.
However, working hard doesn’t mean you’re commited.
“Hard work” occurs in moments, but COMMITMENT never ends.
Being COMMITTED takes HARD WORK!
Value winning not simply for the outcome.
Value winning because of what it TAKES to win.
- The Preparation
- The Mindset
- The Process
Winning happens on PURPOSE with PURPOSE.
And that’s why placing value on WINNING is important.
Practice design and drills are only as good as the transfer to real competition.
Practice should be more about long term retention rather than task completion.
CLA/Ecological Dynamics/Non-Linear Pedagogy are just words if players/coaches don’t connect the dots to the game.
Personal goal:
-BE better at what I DO know
-GET better at what I DON’T know
-Have the awareness to understand the difference
——————————
Let’s all continue to strive towards the best version of ourselves in effort to have an impact on others.
Here’s to the adventure of 2020!
Do it.
Suck at it.
Understand why.
Work at it.
Suck less.
Understand why.
Work more.
Check in with process.
Understand why......
Keep DOING.
Learn by IMPLEMENTING.
Thank you, as always,
@LegKickNationOG
“Players have lost instinct.”
What else would you expect when they’re TOLD WHAT to do, and HOW to do it.
The process INVOLVES the player. It’s not dictated.
Get comfortable allowing the environment and experiences drive the bus.
If you are in a position of leadership, people will naturally listen to what you say.
However, they will determine the importance of the message by observing what you DO.
Your most impactful mode of communication is your BEHAVIOR.
#TeamofTeams
COACHES: Environment (practice) DESIGN is our greatest responsibility.
Raise the stakes while creating safety.
Illuminate urgency while adhering to process.
Push the limits while offering endless support.
This takes time. Effort. Commitment. It’s called COACHING.
When you can have an open conversation with a friend and discuss both sides of an issue without it getting personal, you know you have the right friends.
“You can spend all day undermining other people, and even if you’re right, who cares?”
People will listen when you BRING value; not devalue.
Be better.
True “mastery” is an endless game of learning and being challenged.
It’s not something to be “found.”
Mastery, then, is an experience rather than a destination.
“Good timber does not grow with ease, the stronger wind, the stronger trees.” Douglas Malloch
Challenging environments create strength.
Higher bars force you to jump higher.
“EXECUTION trumps TALENT”
Heard that today and I like it
There are so many layers to EXECUTION:
-Preparation
-Pushing out comfort zone
-Saying NO
-Saying YES
-Commitment
-Handling failure
-Handling success
-Being in the moment
- Others..
And getting it done when it MATTERS
Decision making and movement solutions are determined by perception of the game environment.
Coaches: Your perception of what’s happening is different than the player.
Rather than yell/scream during the game, create better perceptual experiences during practice!
🤔 Imagine that. Prepare for what’s actually going to happen..
Perfect practice simply makes you a perfect practicer.
If the conditions are different than the game environment, it’s like acing your English homework in preparation for a Math test.
Practice deliberately.
Story behind Lamar Jackson working with wet football on Thanksgiving Day practice. It was his idea. Ravens coach John Harbaugh believes in "perfect practices" but Jackson persuaded him to get a bucket of water for footballs because of today's forecast.
While developing skills are important, it will be meaningless if the player is unable to perform these skills under actual game conditions.
Let’s not be fooled by rote practice behaviors.
Game performance is what matters!
“Buy in” occurs when players believe in the product being sold.
When “buy in” doesn’t occur, who needs to change?
Does the coach ALWAYS have a buyable product?
Instead of blaming, find the reasons players are willing to invest (or not) in what you’re doing.
Players and parents:
Be more concern about the EXPERIENCE you’re going to have at your next event
vs
What schools/coaches are going to be there.
If you’re not having fun, “exposure” will turn into “exposed”
There’s no at bat that important.
No inning that matters that much.
No level where this is acceptable.
Baseball. We need to be better.
Youth sports. We need to be better.
Perspective is needed more than ever.
We’re creating experiences. And it’s not supposed to be this.
This just makes me really sad. How do we stop this type of thing from happening?
Parents. Please. Think about your kids. They are watching everything you do and say.
This guy should never be allowed on a field again let alone coaching young athletes.
"We prefer to see “winners” as “naturally talented” rather than “hard working.” Because if it were reversed, what would that imply about us?" -
@naval
Simple. There are no hacks.
Is it really fair to say, “Have a growth mindset” to a player just because the COACH has failed to convey a message?
Or
When the coach has only used 1 way of teaching/communicating?
Often times it’s the one preaching “growth mindset” that’s fixed.
Seems to happen a lot.
From: Teaching With Your Mouth Shut
“The teacher who knows he/she does not have the answer is often the one who can be most useful to students.”
Applications to coaching?
David Freese on Yasiel Puig: Imagine how much energy and focus you’d free up to perform and enjoy if you allow yourself to fully be you when you play. The Dodgers allow freedom and creativity. It’s part of a special culture.
#OurWay
#BeYou
Baseball twitter is a cess pool during quarantine. People ripping each other left and right. The game is hard to play. Any drill is helpful, potentially. Not hard to take what you like and leave the rest alone. Our game needs positivity right now.
We control our behaviors.
With an average of 70,000 thoughts a day, there is no way to “control” thoughts.
Shift attention to actions/behaviors/the environments we’re in.
Those are the “controllables”
Not thoughts.
PLAYERS: Having a CLEAR understanding of who you want to BECOME will help drive your response to practice environments and overall behaviors.
COACHES: Our DUTY is to make sure the environment DEMANDS and SUPPORTS the process of BECOMING.
A ton of feedback and inquiries from the
@ABCA1945
Conference. Here is one of our latest articles on Behavior: Why Understanding Behavior is Imperative For Coaches
A lot of “Don’t” “No” “Not”
What if we spent more time explaining what we DO want?
We can ALL create visual representations of what to DO. The same can’t be said about DON’T.
Is there a better way than celebrating a list of what not to do??
Reminder:
There is no short circuiting the process.
Although each athletes trajectory is different, ALL had their own process to go through.
No hacks.
No gimmicks.
Just work.
Trial and error.
Ups and downs.
Handling success.
Overcoming setbacks.
The answer lies within.
Coaches who preach “Get to the next pitch” should be aware of their behavior also.
Arguing calls, yelling at players, belittling the staff, throwing tantrums.. all MODEL the BEHAVIOR you don’t want.

The people of the Middle Ages had practice figured out LONG AGO!
1. Reps matter (however you view them)
2. Self-correction
3. Attention to DETAIL
4. Intent
“Skill is technique under pressure.”
Coaches: Are we training accordingly?
Players: Are you holding your coach accountable for YOUR training? Are you open to being challenged?
Being SKILLED > having skills.
Does your training hold up in various conditions?
“The best we can do is to put an athlete in an environment that helps to promote the way we want them to adapt"
Environment matters. A lot.
Take the time to develop it.
“If you fail on Monday, the only way it’s a failure on Monday is if you decide not to progress from that” Kobe
Failure, struggle, etc. is what we make of it.
Mindset is a choice.

“Learning involves a permanent change in how you see and act in the world.
The accumulation of information isn’t learning.
Lots of people have heads full of information they don’t know what to do with.”

For the coaches rushing to their next position...
For the players wanting to short-circuit their practice habits..
“The very desire to find shortcuts makes you eminently unsuited for any kind of mastery.”

At a time when it feels like everyone is chomping at the bit to announce their new title, promotion, or organization jump... keep this advice from
@AdamMGrant
in mind
It’s not about what your title/role is. It’s about WHO you’re with and what you are ACTUALLY doing. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻
Even if a job title impresses other people, it's the wrong choice if the day-to-day work depresses you.
In career decisions, beware of being seduced by status.
Pursue a job where you can express your values and a place where people share those values.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, New Year!
From our family to yours. Thank you all for the interactions, insights, and new friendships.
Looking forward to many more!
In coaching, simplicity and efficiency win. If you come up with a drill that requires two bands, a connection ball, three weighted balls, seven blue M&Ms, a tire iron, and a half gallon of snake oil, your drill isn’t any good for anything other than social media entertainment.
Pieces of paper from someone else telling you “you’re certified” doesn’t mean the players you coach got better. Unless applied properly and actually has an impact, it’s no more than an ego boost. Coaching isn’t about a list of certs. It’s about serving others.
