My favorite track workout of the year for the distance crew today. The 800 predictor. 400 at goal 800 pace, 200 jog 6x200 at goal 800 pace w/200 jog after each. 400 all out in spikes Add the two 400’s together to get a projected 800 time.

This one hurt towards the end. Was feeling great through 24 miles, then the wheels came off. Kept moving forward and thankful to have finished my final marathon. Time to focus on my teams, my daughter and my new life as a recreational runner... plus some 5k and 10k races for fun!

Glorifying and only chasing D1 offers is a trap for most kids. Most kids can’t handle the D1 lifestyle where sports are basically a buisiness. I have seen many kids throw away phenomenal D2 and D3 offers to walk on at D1’s and they barely last a month....

One of the biggest stories last night was the breakthrough of Qa’Ron Hawkins. Hasn’t PR’d in triple since Soph year when he jumped 45-6. Injured almost all of junior year. Last night he broke a 30 year old school record and PR’d big time with a jump of 47-1! Pumped for him!

This year a majority of our kids have made a significant mileage jump. We have stressed to make sure the easy days have been relaxed and conversational. I used to stress over the paces on the easy days, but I have taken a step back in doing that and just letting them run by feel.

Impressed/shocked by Shelby Houlihan’s long run today. 19 miles averaging 6:14/mile at elevation in Colorado Springs. That’s a loooong, hard effort for a 1500 runner.

Extremely jealous of these schools that invest in their track and field programs. This facility is incredible. Indoor track, multiple courts inside that can be divided for volleyball and basketball. All of their athletic programs would benefit from this facility. Incredible.

I don’t know who started the rumor that indoor and outdoor track are 2 different things. If you want to be on the track team, we start January 27th. You cannot just come out for the outdoor season, unless you are in a winter sport. Thanks!

Sophomore Noah Gilbert broke the 5:00 barrier for the first time yesterday, 4:53.35. This points to the beauty of track and field. Not many people are paying attention to the 4th place finisher in the fresh-soph mile, but to Noah Gilbert and Coach Derks, it's a big deal.
