The men and women of our Submarine Service who sacrifice so much to spend months on end at sea protecting the UK.
The debt we all owe them cannot be overstated and I was proud to visit HMS Astute this week to thank those on board for their service.
Today kicks off Learning at Work Week. The SDA is holding events throughout the week focusing on the theme of ‘Learning Power’.
The week is a national initiative that encourages us to develop new skills which are crucial to ensuring we deliver our mission.

On this day in 1990, HMS Talent, the sixth of the Trafalgar-Class attack submarines was commissioned into the Royal Navy 🇬🇧.
HMS Talent, like all of the Trafalgar-Class, was built at Barrow-in-Furness.

Agamemnon is named after the King of the Mycenae from the Trojan Wars.
She is the first submarine to carry the name and the first Royal Navy warship since a World War II minelayer to be called so.

in 1913, HMS E1, the first of the E-Class submarines was commissioned into the Royal Navy.
The class was made up of 58 submarines and spilt into three groups. Group one and two were started before World War I and were replaced in due course by the L-Clas

Agamemnon was named in a traditional ceremony at
@BAESystemsMaritime
shipyard in Barrow-In-Furness.
The first working submarine was a leather-covered rowboat invented by Cornelis Drebbel in 1620.
Drebbel went on to build two more, with the final one managing to reach depths of 15 feet.

On this day in 1963 HMS Dreadnought – the UK’s first nuclear-powered submarine was commissioned into the Royal Navy 🇬🇧.
She was powered by a pressurised water reactor which enabled her to remain submerged for long periods.
