As we plan the recovery phase I hope we remember that staff are exhausted - physically, mentally and emotionally. Staff wellbeing, rest and fatigue needs to be integral to any plans
Very lovely surgeon asked me if I could help with the bleeding. Basically I asked what that has to do with me. Breathing. He said breathing. More rocuroniun and an apology. Mortified
Although it does go a bit far sometimes! Like when watching a tedious education video with a family singing he shouted out ‘OMG it’s the Von Trapps again’
It’s not as dramatic as finishing chemo but today I had my last therapy session for depression. It’s not exaggeration to say it’s changed my life. Thanks to everyone who has (unknowingly) helped me
Really pleased to be working with midwives to humanise c-sections and support breastfeeding. Because we all gave a role in this. So much more to obs anaesthesia than spinals and epidurals
Ensuring there are enough scrubs available in the morning would be an easy way of reducing staff stresses. It’s a minor stress but one we can do without
So today I have heard of a case of a Specialty Doctor working on the same rota as their consultant colleagues, doing the same role, same risks and responsibilities but apparently no money for a Specialist post. Explain to me how that isn’t exploitation?
Looking at the whole airborne vs aerosol debate - did we overprotect theatres and under protect the wards? Seems odd that we were doing cases under spinals in FFP3 (just in case) whilst red wards didn’t
Some of the recent talk about SAS drs has been rather depressing. Training didn’t work out for me and I was going to leave. I’m sure some seem me as ‘failed’. But a wise mentor got me into SAS grade. 15yrs later I’m still giving anaesthetics. I see that as success!
I have bling! Blown away to be presented the Anniversary metal by
@Assoc_Anaes
Being on the SAS committee has been an absolute pleasure and there’s so many who share this award for all their help and support
I passed!
@abrsm
grade 4 piano. Loved learning as an adult - never too late to start. Huge thanks to my teacher for her support encouragement and patience!
My son has found a Nintendo game where you run a hospital. So far he’s massively in debt, sacked all the staff and the janitor is chasing the ghosts of dead patients! Sounds like an everyday NHS hospital
Last ever day at
@HarrogateNHSFT
I joined here as a ‘trainee in difficulty’ and leave here 12yrs later proud to be a

. This place has helped me so much - I will miss everyone
With all the seniors stepping up to cover night gaps I hope people realise that there are plenty of
#sasdoctors
doing this week in, week out. And realise how hard it is and why we need to make it safer. Many of these SAS are in their 40s and 50s.
#fightfatigue
These aren’t doctors hoping to get into anaesthetics. They ARE already anaesthetists and their contribution to covid has been both invaluable and awe inspiring. They deserve better
This is 75% of the SAS in our dept. All have had national roles, spoken or organised meetings and taken on lead roles in departments. Who says SAS is just a service job?

Becoming a SAS dr saved my anaesthetic career, my sanity and probably my marriage. There is more than one way to skin a cat - or to become a successful doctor. Great to hear
@RobJimFleming
discuss this
#AC2023
Is waiting for
@BBCRadio3
to finish the Rachmaninoff piano concerto a good excuse to sit in my car and be late for work? Will my colleagues be understanding?
@PetrocTrelawny
When I was a struggling trainee a wise senior colleague asked me bluntly but kindly if I still wanted to be an anaesthetist. No one had actually asked me that. Or suggested alternative routes
Why are almost-teens both infuriating and hilarious? 12yr son is refusing to do ‘family’ stuff because he self IDs as a cushion and so it’s a hate crime to make him leave the sofa
Rather shell shocked to be on the other side of bereavement - as a family member not a dr. My wonderful mother died yesterday - she’d been unwell for a few weeks but the sudden deterioration came as a massive shock
Poor boy has not had a good day! Left his phone at school, didn’t get voted class rep and PE was dance. To top it the chicken wrap was tofu! Apparently it’s the worst day of his life. It’s hard being 11!
Today I am really rather angry on behalf of my psychiatry friends and colleagues. If you don’t support votes for SAS you don’t support SAS full stop
@RCPsychSASdocs
One think that seems to be apparent from all the strike discussions is that many people don’t know who SAS doctors are. We’re not junior doctors, we’re not ‘trust registrars’ and we’re not going on strike on the 13th
A well intentioned colleague asked me why I wasn’t doing CESR. Why wouldn’t I want to be a consultant? Couldn’t seem to get that I was very happy in my current job. Life would be dull if we all wanted the same
@SASByChoiceUK
Only theatre staff will get this but in my absence I’ve dropped down a scrub size! The thrill of getting the brown tagged scrubs off the shelf was palpable!
Supervising someone doing their first epidural is one of the most nerve wracking things I do as an anaesthetist! Even though they did great I was on tenterhooks till the needle was out!
Blown away to be given this from the maternity staff
@HarrogateNHSFT
as a leaving present. They’re an amazing team and I’ll miss them. They’ve also got my taste spot on!
I’ll admit I was so scared of working through this period. But the last two nights have been amazing. Great team work and I feel proud to be doing my job. We’re all pulling together whatever our role
Huge thanks to
@HarrogateNHSFT
for providing free parking and food for staff. Every bit helps in these difficult times. Must resist the temptation too often..
We can now announce that for the first time, junior doctors and consultants will be taking joint strike action in England.
Here are the dates for September and October
#DoctorsStrike
As of today my time on the
@Anaes_SAS
committee comes to end. Thanks to all the staff and members
@Assoc_Anaes
for your help. It’s been a blast. I’ve loved every minute. Hopefully I’ve made some small difference
I’ve been off here a bit to destress but wanted to give a huge shoutout and support to all the SAS doctors, especially those working in new ways.

Why are we as a group so anti GA we tolerate failed regional in a way that wouldn’t be acceptable in any other surgery. We wouldnt mess with fentanyl, nitrous or ketamine in a hip replacement….
Mixed emotions today. Very happy to be starting a new challenge
@BTHFT
but also sad to have handed in my notice
@HarrogateNHSFT
I will miss the place hugely
Literally about to leave the car when
@PetrocTrelawny
@BBCRadio3
played Zadok the Priest. Wonderful. Thanks for reminding me of MrsJ walking down the aisle 13yrs ago. And for almost making me late for work!
One of my favourite bits of being an anaesthetist is working with the novices in Aug. Such a pleasure to see how they learn - can’t believe they’ve only been with us for three weeks
Had a flyer for yet another SAS development course that dedicates half the program to CESR. Yet most of us aren’t planning to do CSER and are proud to be
@SASByChoiceUK
@MedicWeary
Cancellation is the only language they understand. Just don’t work without a break. It’s unsafe and against regulations. If that means cancelling in the short term then so be it
@ncl_medic
You need to be clear who’s leading on this case. Are they doing it and leading - with you supervising? Or are you leading and teaching them your plan. Errors occur when neither is sure which is the case!
And SAS Anaesthetists. Who as ever have quietly carried on providing amazing care for maternity. Often working harder as they cover ill or redeployed colleagues
#sasdoctors
Maternity services have seen restrictions in home births, pool births etc, but obstetric anaesthetists have kept the show on the road, despite the huge pressures on anaesthetic services. Often delivered by resident consultants

@noolslucas
Why does the NHS make me feel guilty for not covering a gap on another rota when I have plans for the weekend? And I already work 11.5PAs. I feel so bad knowing someone else will have to do it if I don’t
Late to the party as ever - just watched
#ThisIsGoingToHurt
not what I expected. Shell shocked. Non-medical MrsJ doesn’t get why it’s affected me so much
Being a SAS doctor can feel lonely and isolating. There is strength in numbers. Get involved in SAS forum or LNC locally. Meet up with your colleagues. Join your college or association
Too often messages of support for SAS have a faintly patronising tone to them. And too make SAS don’t have a voice - locally, regionally or nationally. That’s why I got involved in SAS issues years ago

was the most read online article in Anaesthesia News 2021-22!🏆👏
Read it here:
Just finished a book on the kindle and it has offered me the chance to sign up for updates and new releases from the author. I think it’s unlikely Jane Austen will write any more books….
@noodles_nood
It is the same entry criteria as the SAS grade (except the MRCS) yet on a rubbish pay scale and local T&Cs. They want an experienced SAS dr but won’t pay for it. Exploitation at its worst
@Jopo_dr
I had a specialty training interview in a hotel. There were so many of us they were using the bedrooms. I shook the panel’s hands then walked out. Into the bathroom
