The Rowing Voice, with updates from Row360, Telegraph & RV rowing correspondent Rachel Quarrell at live events. Out and about in the rowing world (UK & intl).
It may not seem like much but it’s lovely to see women free to be smart in another way at HRR, after nearly 50 years of being told what not to wear, by men.
One of
@matthewcpinsent
's best ever pieces of rowing writing - the online link is at but for those without subscription here it is.
Matt let me know if posting the pic is copyright-verboten - but I hope not, this was too good not to share.
Very good news - Thames Tradesmen's RC has reached a settlement with the council and can continue its lease and tenure without having to go to court.
More on (Facebook main TTRC page, first story under Photos).
HRR scoop - it’s not often I’m first to publish but in
@TelegraphSport
tonight, the announcement of a new women’s event for HRR for 2020 and more to come in 2021 -
HRR really ought to broadcast the prizegiving too - it’s a special moment for any collecting little red boxes, & Pete’s comments to the rowers today would inspire anyone listening to try and reach this point themselves. Supporters who can’t get to Henley Sunday would love to see.
To my astonishment y’day pm the Teleg sports desk rang saying they’d had a change of heart & want a piece every day this week. Pls share, retweet, comment - even better if it’s direct from the online piece & not via my Twitter feed. Do criticise - no need to be kind, just react.
Just announced,
@imogendaisyg
set a new world best time in the LW1x on virtually still conditions and lengths ahead of everyone. If that didn't emphasise what incredible form she is in, I don't know what would.
Former time: Zoe McBride (NZL) in 2015, 7-24.46.
New time 7-23.36.
Brilliant to see world & European champion and triple Olympic silver medallist
@HoughtonFrances
given an MBE for services to rowing in the NY honours. One of the most unassuming and stalwart members of the GB team for almost two decades.
For those who knew him, Mike Rosewell died today in hospital after falling ill 2wks ago: the latest of many medical issues.
RIP Mike, great & generous colleague; wily journalist, coach & mentor; irrepressible raconteur, nifty dancer.
We'll raise the official BARJ toast to you. x
Thanks
@TelegraphSport
for putting in the piece about the unusual HORR yesterday - .
Can anyone work out where Reuters' snapper took their pic from? Off Chiswick Bridge I presume but it's very higgledy-piggledy even for early in the marshalling process.
I do hope that the BBC, ITV, Sky and Channel 4 will start re-running fabulous past sporting moments/games/events - what an opportunity. We could relive the whole of the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics on British TV in the next few weeks - amazing. 2003 Boat Race on 29/3/20 please!
In a frankly surprising turn of events M. Brigham of Leeds University has beaten Mahe Drysdale, holding a commanding lead throughout. A big congratulations for keeping composure against such a big name.
Not rowing, but a hell of an experience to watch live on TV while Kipchoge breaks the long-legendary 2-hour marathon barrier.
I cycle daily past the track where Bannister did the 3-59.4 mile 65 years ago, and this kind of feat sets fire to imaginations for decades.
Superlative.
After much background negotiation the varsity rowing clubs of Oxford (all four, openweight and lightweight of both genders) have now merged, as just announced in a statement to all alumni. One men's and one women's squad within the club (which will be called OUBC) for all races.
Chutzpah award of the week so far goes to Valent Sinkovic of
@SinkovicBros
for asking the weigh-in tent to make sure his middle name was put down as "The Beast" in the programme.
HRR reaction: "I don't think we can do that, sir".

No evening sun this year but an hour of peace to write my Telegraph article before going home at the end of another
@HenleyRegatta
. Well done the Stewards for putting it on.
Congratulations the whole backup team for GBR U23s - this many conversions to gold speaks of excellent team management and minor details going right again and again across the board, as well as athlete talent.
GBR M8+: "Jürgen's a man of few words, but those words are very powerful. We still have a group chat from when he was coaching us. He messaged us before the race, just said "go out there, give it everything, I believe in you" - that was it. Enough said, really."
Have a read of this if you haven't already seen what
@vestarowing
did with the Vets Head today.
Great call everyone, and if you were involved Chris Harrison, kudos mate
I'm not usually this angry but the pitiful lack of detail in today's GB trials coverage, including that sent more privately to journalists, is ridiculous.
No times, not even margins, and the few photos could have been taken in training.
No story, not worth "following" at all.
I think this snippet got into the print Telegraph - better than nothing for an age-group result. Now good luck the juniors - go for it so I have something superb enough to write about that the paper will want to take an article.
#resultscount
Incredibly sad news from across the pond - Ed Winchester, former CAN LM2- world champion (2000) and long-time editor of the Rowing News magazine, has died of an apparent heart attack while erging. A tremendous loss to the rowing and journalism worlds. So sad for all close to him.
And I haven’t checked the print edition yet - next job - but thanks
@TelegraphSport
for putting this online today despite all the many other huge claims on sports coverage.
Feeling the usual post-regatta sadness that it's all over. It's been so nice to see rowing friends again, even with masks as barriers. The racing has been outstanding, and I'll be spending the next couple of days here before I fly back processing it & writing it up for
@row360
.
Rather brilliant to see that Rosie
@mayglothling
has been made OBE in this year’s honours “for services to rowing and gender equality in sport”. One of the hard-working busy bees of FISA.
Thanks very much to the sports desk editors at
@TelegraphSport
this week for giving so much space to rowing.
It makes a huge difference to the national team to know that the independent unsponsored media support them.
#notjustfortheOlympics
Morning all - looks as if the whole of my article in the Telegraph has got in online at least (can’t see the print edition as I’m still in Germany for a couple more days).
And brilliant that several people have already commented!
To team managers, performance directors & press, remember you can treat bronze or 4th as a stepping stone to future gold, or you can let it be a tragedy. It’s up to you. The Tokyo M8+ need to remember the Beijing and London medals before Rio and squeeze all they can out of this.
(Not rowing) - a brief political remark to
@maitlis
- superb work 2nite. "She's not meant to be negotiating with the Conservative Party, but with the EU".
Ten minutes later eviscerating Labourites similarly.
Stonking.
This is Rachel Quarrell by the way - very long time no see. x
DT article’s gone up -
One inapt subeditor error - I ended par4 “Grobler who had grown accustomed to coaching individual crews, incompatible with leading the whole squad” - they’ll have changed it for space reasons. So don’t yell at me for that ‘mistake’!
First Olympic regatta for GBR without a gold in 41 years, but a silver and a bronze reflects this Olympiad well and is _way_ better than nothing. Well done M8+ you laid it on the line and still came away with bronze, busting a gut.
Watching the NZL W8+ coming past (with Caleb Shepherd coxing), and the NED M8+ steered by Eline Berger, it's good to see that opposite genders are coxing medal-chance crews and the sky hasn't fallen in. Been going on for years at club level, it's not new. Best cox => best crew.
The GBR men's four continuing the famous tradition of racing (winning), spinning without delay and rowing straight off to wind down while everyone else is catching their breath. Time-honoured since Redgrave first did it to psych out the oppo.
A standing ovation in Stewards as the announcer cleanly passes through "Algemene Amsterdamsche Studenten Roeivereniging Skøll and Algemene Rott
erdamsche Studenten Roeivereniging Skadi" without even a moment to take a breath
Following Jürgen Grobler's retirement yesterday/today an op-ed piece:
in
@row360
online with some great pictures from
@NaomiBkr
, Row360 editor Ben Tufnell, and
@nickmiddleton88
.
Shrewsbury's first junior women's eight at Henley wins that, glides to an elegant stop with blades up as they wait for Enniskillen to cross the line, then do a nice clear three cheers straight away. Well done ladies!
Excellent racing from LEH and Shrewsbury, very gutsy row that both crews should be proud of and only a canvas in it at the end - perhaps the best race of the day so far.
Bloody good idea.
@markxdavies
what about British Rowing producing something similar for all members to keep in wallets? It's far too easy to misdiagnose or ignore (we wouldn't have lost Andy Holmes if it had been taken more seriously as a possible explanation for his symptoms).
@RowingVoice
It is a very serious problem indeed. As a construction worker it is one of the first topics on every site induction.
I carry a card in my wallet thanks to Faithful & Gould. If you have flu like symptoms you should go see your GP and tell them you Row.
Yes it is Boris Rankov’s last year as an umpire, and the Doubles was his penultimate race. He’s got the Grand as his last ever HRR umpiring gig, so give him a massive cheer if you’re along the course. He’s made an inimitable contribution to HRR umpiring over the years. (RQ)
@WBSBC
beating Leander to earn their Fawley finals place, thumbs up and three cheers to Leander after the line. Leander too worn out to react. Umpire (Andy Crawford) told the two it was the best race at Henley he had ever umpired.
Oh my flipping heck. Six flipping gold medals - doesn’t that put us ahead of Italy despite their stash of 5 non-Olympic class wins? I just watched the GBR men’s swim relay team beat the US (first time in history anyone’s done that) and then the GBR U23 M8+ go and top it. Wow.
Yes it is an official verdict. What a lovely HRR solution to a margin description problem. (RQ).
A senior BARJ member concurs that this is the first time a non-DH verdict smaller than a foot has been awarded at HRR.
The not-Telegraph-useable quote from today belongs to
@RossiBoy2
- "Full respect to the guys that beat us - it's annoying to lose to the Polish as we had their pants down in Rotterdam".
On the flip side I did get serial killers into the DT
@hollyhill123
and
@svparfett
:-)
