A homesteading woman never has to leave her baby's side - not even while she's working. (In the clip, my son and I are helping my husband herd our livestock to their evening grazing.)

Homesteading doesn't really work if you don't go full retard. You know why so many homesteads fail? It's a really obvious issue, but no one talks about it. The problem is chickens. More precisely, the "start with some chickens" approach to homesteading. DON'T start with

Contrary to popular belief, chopping firewood is pretty light work that is often performed by women while men are busy doing heavier tasks. It is about as strenuous as doing laundry by hand and fits well with other womanly tasks that are centered around the fireplace.

We found our herd! After EIGHT DAYS of constant searching and worrying, our sheep were spotted by the river by a group of kids waiting for the school bus. Judging by their affectionate behavior upon seeing me, as well as their eagerness to return home, they were genuinely lost.

If you want a hard woman to tame land with, it's right all the way. Good luck trying to get the one on the left to live in a small cabin without running water or a toilet - prepare to hear a whole lot about what the "bare minimum" is. Heavy metal chicks is where the money is.

Many people warned us that turning a profit by raising livestock is "extremely difficult" and that it requires "huge initial investments". Turns out they were wrong. All livestock needs is good pasture and some modest infrastructure that you can easily bushcraft at zero cost.

"Homestead Twitter" is crazy about cows, and for good reason. But, as great as cows are, for the self-reliant homesteader, sheep are even better. If we could keep only one kind of livestock, we'd keep sheep. Milk, meat, wool, fast growth, winter-hardiness... All on pasture alone.

Women who feel their husbands should work hard so that they could, on the other hand, have a "soft life" are bad wife material. Laziness is a poor substitute for true femininity just as a glorified sugar baby is a poor substitute for a real wife. Only soft men want soft women.

Self-sufficiency is incompatible with intensive farming methods. You don't want fast growers and heavy milkers. You want old, traditional breeds. Healthy, hardy, late-maturing animals. Modest producers, but great survivors. Just such animals kept us fed for the last 10,000 years.

YOU DON'T NEED A JOB. You need land. A job is a very convoluted and roundabout way of providing for your basic needs. It's the System's way of making you dependent on itself, so it can steal the lion's share of what you produce. The only thing jobs are good for is buying land.

As a homesteader, you have to learn things the hard way - by doing them - and all your initial efforts will give flawed results. The more mistakes you make, the quicker you'll learn, so don't let perfectionism hold you back. The sooner you start making mistakes, the better.
