Much is said about Peterborough, and it does have many issues, but there can't be many better sights in the UK than coming through the archway to the Cathedral on a sunny day...
I can't decide if
@paulbristow79
is suggesting that a Labour led Council in Peterborough wouldn't take the projects forward, that he couldn't work with them, or that the Government wouldn't give any more money for new projects if its not run by the same party?
Wow, 1 year since I had the crazy thought that this would be a good idea, and what a year it's been. 10 councillor defections, 9 political interviews resulting in 12 podcast episodes.
Thanks for the follows and the listens, and here's to the next year!
#MyTwitterAnniversary
Not bad for a niche little Local Government/politics podcast, right?
Continuing to see good numbers on the latest episode, and spikes in listens to previous ones. So great to see new listeners finding it. The more people listen, the more and better questions we get!
Former Conservative councillor, now independent,
@CllrChrisHarper
has given his view of the station 'cheque' video. Probably fair to assume that he isn't looking to re-join the Conservative group anytime soon!
I understand that the motion of no confidence in Cllr Fitzgerald has been submitted ahead of the full Council meeting set for the 1st November, with all the opposition leaders included as signatories.
I understand that the motion of no confidence in Cllr Fitzgerald has been submitted ahead of the full Council meeting set for the 1st November, with all the opposition leaders included as signatories.
So, after all that, I make the below the new make up of the Council.
Labour - 19 (+5)
Peterborough First - 14 (+3)
Conservative - 11 (-11)
Lib Dems - 9 (+1)
Green - 4 (+2)
Independents - 3 (=)
Changes from before this election.
No worries about unparliamentary language in this statement from
@LabourPBoro
group leader Dennis Jones.
Calling
@paulbristow79
a liar over his statements on the potential for Low Emissions Zone charging in Peterborough should Labour take control of the Council.
Checking in with the current predictions for the Peterborough constituency at the next General Election, and it continues to look difficult for incumbent
@paulbristow79
to hold off main challenger
@andrewpakes_
, with it predicted between 23-28% majority for the Labour candidate.
In podcast news, next months episode will be with Peterborough's Youth MP
@evawoodsmyp
.
Will likely be a very different perspective on Peterborough and its politics, so if you have any questions pop them below, DMs are open, or email politics.peterborough

Having spent an hour in the company of
@evawoodsmyp
this afternoon recording for the podcast, it absolutely backs up what I said below.
Her passion for Peterborough is evident, and is exactly what you'd want in someone representing the people's interests.
Peterborough has a very impressive Youth MP. If she's not a Councillor somewhere, hopefully in Peterborough, in the next few years it'd be a great shame.

The 20th of March 2023 marks three years since schools in England first closed to help stop the spread of COVID-19. What lessons have we actually learnt about young people's issues from the pandemic?

A thread ->
It was announced by outgoing
@LabourPBoro
leader
@ShazNawaz1
that Councillor Dennis Jones will be the new leader of the group going forwards. Councillor Jones gave a fairly impassioned speech on the budget earlier in the evening.
This opinion piece from
@paulbristow79
seems to avoid the Section 114 notices issued by Northamptonshire Council (2018) and Thurrock Council (2022), both Conservative run.
Not Council-related per se but Cllr Katy Cole
@katy4Dogsthorpe
and Labour group leader Cllr Dennis Jones have been delivering books to 3 schools in their Dogsthorpe ward.
Great interview with
@ShazNawaz1
this afternoon covering everything from how he got into
#Politics
, the 2022 elections, St Georges hydrotherapy pool, the Bretton Oak, to the number of councillors
#Peterborough
should have. Podcast will be out later this week, available everywhere
Councillor Farooq becomes the 5th Conservative Councillor to leave the party since the election.
See his account below in an interview with
@PaulStainton
and
@CambsNewsOnline
This explains why the cinema in Queensgate has yet to open.
No mention of it in this article, but there must be a desperate search for an alternative provider to take it on, which would be the third before it's even opened...
I've had confirmation from the Council that all polling stations will be keeping a record of people turned away due to not having valid ID.
I'm waiting to hear whether that info will be released or just forwarded to central Government for analysis.
Total amount owed to creditors of 'Fletton Quays Hotel' is nearly £33m, of which half is to
@PeterboroughCC
.
The key questions - how much more will it cost PCC to get Peterborough taxpayers' money back? And is that even possible?
Well, it's not yet 11am and this month's episode of the podcast looks like it's going to smash through the Day 1 listening record currently held by
@PaulStainton
. Make sure you take a listen at the link below, or wherever you listen to podcasts.
A lot has been made about Peterborough being granted just under £50m to redevelop the city's only station and surrounding area.
Meanwhile Cambridge, a city 2/3rds the size, is getting £200m to fully fund a 3rd station...
"The public are fed up with grand promises and ‘superhero’ politicians who think it is all about them, without any credit for the businesses and public servants who make change happen." - Andrew Pakes, Labour’s Parliamentary candidate for Peterborough.
Podcast news:
My interview with
@ShaileshVara
is in the can. He gives answers on the by election results, his visibility (or lack thereof) in Peterborough, recent goings-on at the Council, and more.
It'll be out in the world for you to listen to on Wednesday next week.

No UKIP (3.31%) or For Britain (1.07%) as previous.
Labour GAIN from Conservatives

I see that
@CllrJulieS
and
@docshab
are returning
@pbhydro_users
do the agenda with a couple of questions on the subject at the Full Council meeting this evening.
5 weeks today, voting will nearly be over in the Local and the Police & Crime Commissioner elections.
Also, just over a week away from the return of Ward Watch! Who's ready for it??
The archaeologist who discovered Flag Fen,
@PryorFrancis
, warns of the effect climate change will have on the Fens.
I still think he'd make a great podcast guest...
Having come out of the Local Elections just one seat short of a majority on the Council, the Conservatives now find themselves with their lowest number of seats in Peterborough since 2001, and their lowest proportion of councillors since 1999.
"Under responsible Conservative leadership in Peterborough we have turned a corner, balanced the budget and done so whilst maintaining a good standard of public services."
What does that say about the prior leadership, which was also Conservative?
This opinion piece from
@paulbristow79
seems to avoid the Section 114 notices issued by Northamptonshire Council (2018) and Thurrock Council (2022), both Conservative run.
A week today, I'll be sitting down with
@JoannaRTaylor
,
@CllrJulieS
and
@PaulStainton
for a roundtable discussion on the upcoming elections.
What topics would you like put on the table? What questions do you want them answering? Post below, DM or email the address in the bio.
Our service is under extreme pressure. Ambulances delayed outside hospitals & high call volumes. We have increased our escalation state across the Trust. Please support us by using our services wisely & only calling for life-threatening illnesses & injuries
If you haven't had a chance to see inside the new Uni, this is a great opportunity. The facilities are amazing, and it would definitely be a great place to go.
Getting University House ready to welcome our Open Day visitors.
If you haven’t booked a place but would like to get to know your new university, just pop down to see us today - 10am to 2pm, Bishops Rd, PE1 5BW
This is ARU Peterborough
Unfortunately, Dr Jason Neale has decided to postpone our interview set for this week following the recently reported issues around the current stadium administration.
I'll look to get this rearranged for some point in the future.
My reply-Big steps for Combined Authority at Wednesday Board+important decisions for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.
But big story?Cllr Wayne Fitzgerald’s surprise u-turn and the impact of last-minute backtracking on strategic transport matters.
All the best for the weekend
I'd be interested to get
@BrexitStewart
's thoughts, as a member if the House of Lords, whether the attached CV is the kind of experience the country should be looking for in life appointments to the upper chamber.
Confirmed that Cllr Kirsty Knight has left the Green party and will sit as an independent. She is up for re-election in May and still plans to stand.
Orton Waterville was a Green stronghold, but now 2 of the 3 Councillors sit as independents.
Not
@PeterboroughCC
but right on the boarder, with the Conservative vote falling by half. Also a very impressive showing by an independent candidate.
A sign of things to come in 6 weeks time?
Next couple of episodes of the podcast are now sorted. February's will be with current Deputy Mayor and
@BoroLibDems
councillor
@clrnicksandford
. March's will be with the Mayor of radio (is that a thing?)
@PaulStainton
.
Episode 20 of the podcast is now live!
This is part 1 of my roundtable election discussion with
@PaulStainton
,
@JoannaRTaylor
and
@CllrJulieS
. Part 2 will be out on Monday.
Listen at the link below, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Part 1 of my chat with
@PaulStainton
will be out on Wednesday.
In Part 2, out next week, I asked him about the hydrotherapy pool closure. His blog below links in nicely around some of the issues that people with disabilities face in Peterborough.
I'll be honest, I'm not as au fait with the workings of the Combined Authority (need to work on that before interviewing Dr Nik Johnson), but I'm not sure the CPCA had leisure facilities under its remit?
One of my proudest days. Along with the great Autism Acceptance activists
@paulbristow79
and
@Cllrfitzgerald
- leaders in Peterborough- we committed to installing 100 of the autism communication boards across the city within a year!
#NeuroInclusionNow
In our chat with
@ShazNawaz1
, he professed his preference for using a Proportional Representation system rather than First Past The Post. Looking at the votes over the last 3 local
#Peterborough
elections,
@PboroGreenParty
would probably like it too!
If you haven't had chance to look around ARU Peterborough, which we haven't yet, this is a great tool to have a nose around from the comfort of your home!
Looking forward to seeing some of it in person when we meet
@Ross_Renton
next month for the podcast.
The
@CambsPboroCA
Local Transport and Connectivity Plan has been passed at the 3rd time of asking, after it was previously vetoed by former
@PeterboroughCC
leader Cllr Fitzgerald.
Continuing the transport topic, is this the direction that
#Peterborough
should be going? Prioritising cyclists/pedestrians over road traffic - or would this lead to potentially serious accidents?
@paulbristow79
It's already a good design. Raised to slow drivers and give some cycle track priority with the road narrowing from the left to get drivers to actually use their steering wheels. To tweak it, I would run the asphalt cycle track across in red with the centre line and remove
If you haven't already, take a couple of minutes to read the below about Peterborough's current Mayor's, Councillor Alan Dowson, experiences of Britain's testing of nuclear weapons.
Politics in Peterborough is never dull is it?
3 Conservative councillors, 2 of whom were only re-elected 2 weeks ago, have left the party and joined the Peterborough First group which now finds itself with 7 councillors.
Is the potential for a rainbow coalition back on?
Great to sit down with
@docshab
today to record for the podcast. Lots of topics discussed and your questions put to her.
Will be released next Wednesday wherever you listen to your podcasts or at the link below, where you can also listen to all episodes.
One thing to note - This year's election saw the Conservatives having just 6 seats to defend after losing 4 seats in 2019.
Next year will see them due to defend 16 seats, more than half of their total, compared to 2 for Labour, 2 for PF, and 1 each for the Greens and Lib Dems.
Our next guest on the podcast, Cllr John Howard, also doesn't seem impressed with his former colleagues in the Conservative group for putting forward the motion in the first place.
⚠️😡Make no mistake, we are angry. This Government has today launched an attack on nature. We don’t use the words that follow lightly. We are entering uncharted territory. Please read this thread. 1/13
You get the feeling there is genuine animosity between Councillor Fitzgerald and
@CllrChrisHarper
. Neither are holding back their comments about the other following the Horsey Toll planning decision yesterday.
Clearly it's not possibly for both of the statements below, made in the last 24hrs, to be accurate.
Both
@LabourPBoro
and
@BoroLibDems
have denied accusations by
@paulbristow79
that they would introduce a Low Emissions Scheme into Peterborough.
It's the morning after the night before, so I'd just like to say 'Welcome along' to the number of new followers who joined as it went along.
Should you want more insight, check out past episodes of the podcast below or wherever you normally get them.
I feel sorry for Council officers. There are now:
- 2 Cllr Jones
- 2 Cllr Bonds
- 2 Cllr Shaheeds
- 2 Cllr Farooqs
- 2 Cllr Alis
- 2 Cllr Foxs
- A Cllr Hillier and Cllr Hiller

Peterborough First GAIN from Conservatives
Turnout: 24.80% (+3.68%)
As we enter the likely year of the next General election, let's take a look at the state of play with regards to polling for the 2 Peterborough constituencies.
Peterborough first, and most predictions are that Labour will take more than 50% of the vote
It seems Peterborough First are going on the attack now they're the 3rd largest group on the Council, with no fewer than 7 questions to cabinet members at the Full Council meeting tomorrow night.
There seems to be a particular focus on finance.
Eye, Thorney & Newborough is the first of the Peterborough First gains.
A win by just 9 votes, or 0.38%, is ridiculous but isn't even in the top 3 for smallest margins this year.
The vote for Peterborough's next youth MP is fast approaching, and the call for candidates to replace
@evawoodsmyp
has been put out. Double the chances this time round as well.
Potential future podcast guests as well, that surely tips the balance!
Presumably the secret legal advice provided to Councillors made a big difference to turn a rejection of the proposals into a unanimous acceptance with no changes to the application.
There does feel a slight irony in this tweet from the Council after the Horsey Toll decision yesterday, where 99% of comments on the proposal were objections, but legal advice to councillors meant it was approved unanimously.
As we approach the end of 2023, I just want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who gave up their time to appear on the podcast over the last 12 months, and to you who listen and send in questions.
Here's to a fascinating 2024, and continuing to grow.
So, the cabinet will be made up of the following:
- Cllr M Farooq - Leader
- Cllr Howard - Deputy leader & Finance, Legal and Corp services
- Cllr Bisby - Children's services
- Cllr Hiller - Growth
- Cllr S Farooq - Adults & health
- Cllr Elsey - Transport & Infrastructure
The latest seat predictions for Peterborough at the next General Election continue to look good for
@andrewpakes_
rather than
@paulbristow79
currently.
Polling Report not 100% with their details though, missing that
@NicolaDay78
is confirmed as
@TheGreenParty
candidate.
I have a request for tomorrow, dear followers...
If you are comfortable to, can you let me know after you have voted whether there is a 'Greeter' at your polling station or not, asking you whether you have correct ID before you enter? DMs are open
See below Cllr Howard's thoughts on our chat.
It was certainly thoughtful, measured, open with no holding back.
This is why I love this format, giving people a chance to answer in full.
