Wrote on my Šübşťǎçķ regarding MLS’ blind pursuit of control of American soccer at any cost

Fox Sports is by far the worst license holder for sports properties in the US. Not having streaming and then putting European Championship games on a 3rd party streaming service that is $80 is fucking criminal
In Liverpool’s 2 games since playing Spurs, they have received 2 penalties, a red card in their favour and escaped a blatant second yellow.
I guess crying and screaming corruption really does work.
Best league in the world with the worst officials.
A summary:
- Indianapolis has an 11 year old soccer team
- Team secures site and funding for 20k stadium in downtown Indy
- Commissioner of MLS Don Garber meets with Indy’s mayor and convinces him to back out of the deal in return for a shot at MLS
Oh and this is directed at the organizers to be clear. Average supporters of all sports in the US have been priced out of live events for decades, soccer following that trend is one of the stupidest marketing/business decisions of the 21st century
Can’t wait for the “but 47k would be a great crowd for Bolton, Swansea [insert lower league English team]”
This is the US Men’s National Team in the most prestigious tournament hosted here in decades in a metro area of about 7 million people. The stadium should not be at 50% cap
Congratulations to
@VermontGreenFC
on their win in their opening match in the U.S. Open Cup — the first time the tournament has ever been played in Vermont.
To the team, on and off the field, you make our whole state proud.
- Mayor announces MLS pursuit without acknowledging current team
- No guarantees they’ll get MLS team, active harm done to current team
MLS is bad for soccer

The league will reassess participation for future iterations next winter. Report:

Just to recap:
MLS is currently trying to kill the USOC. They are doing this externally because of fixture congestion that they created with the Leagues Cup. Their proposal of taking such severe cuts of away match gate is revealing that it’s far more about them controlling $
Two cities that MLS has looked at and determined should be “Minor League markets.” Now they have the stage to show that being a first class soccer city is the city’s decision, not a decision for 30 billionaires.
Seems a good atmosphere and feel around this game between Louisville City and Indy Eleven. An ideal game to showcase USL in the historic moment that sees the league broadcast live on network TV in the US for the first time.
Atlanta United are average and fans are losing faith, but Leagues Cup in the summer (especially im ‘24) feels like the wrong time to stage this tournament.
A friend of mine sent me this photo.
One of these fields is for a 2nd division team in the middle of the desert and the other is a field for a 1st division team owned by some of the richest people on the planet at one of the most famous stadiums in the US
Maybe setting up a system where every continental competition aside from WCQ is played in the US is not a good way to prepare this squad for difficult competitive fixtures???
USMNT Twitter is so funny. Y’all had Berhalter out over the balcony until a fluke OG against Jamaica and now all is well because they beat the worst version of Mexico to ever exist lmao
MLS doing a bunch of handwringing and banning Paul McDonough over Inter Miami roster rule violations only to immediately throw all of that out the window for Messi is just really funny
Farewell, SD Loyal. You were a credit to this League and to your community.
For the rest of us, remember that Loyal’s demise is a failing, first and foremost, of governance. It is not a failure of Loyal’s and the fact a well-run club can’t thrive in our ecosystem is shameful.
Anyone following the MLS Superdraft realize that almost every single one of these players cut their teeth in the amateur and semipro levels of the US game?
They are why the Open Cup matters.
MLS folks love to make USOC seem ridiculous by inventing a fake team that has a name that would only have ever existed in MLS 1.0 marketing.
A USL team made it to the Final and MLS did not acknowledge that result. They hyped Orlando's win and did not even mention Sac Republic
So how would you 'build' the US Open Cup to make it more attractive to fans and broadcasters? How do you get to a stage where Atletico Springfield v LAFC is a sold out game, live on tv and a true 'David v Goliath' story? You can say that US Soccer hasn't 'built' or 'marketed' the
REPORT: U.S. Soccer and MLS are continuing to discuss how the league will participate in the 2024 U.S. Open Cup, sources tell The Athletic. Talks ongoing at this weekend's USSF AGM in Dallas.

Seeing folks say “this would never happen in England/Germany/Footballing Nation”
But why wouldn’t it? Two main reasons:
1) Supporters haven’t completely given up and when something like this (or say a Super League) is proposed, they organize protests
2) FAs enforce their laws
Alphonso Davies was identified in Edmonton by a free soccer program before he went to Whitecaps. Without that free program, he’d struggle to get out of Edmonton
I think one thing we should all be able to agree on is that the Berhalter/Reyna thing has served to demonstrate how toxic the USMNT’s online fanbase can be, and it’s also just deepened people’s already entrenched opinions of the program - on both sides. 🤮
MLS: *cherry picks certain successful clubs from D2
*shuts all others from reaching D1
*is the only league that benefits from USSF TV rights
Still MLS: “Look how unstable our lower divisions are”
I’m not ashamed to say that I’m happy these shithead England first fans had to witness a loss firsthand
I’m not happy that Rashford, Sancho and Saka will be the scapegoats because HARRY FUCKING KANE went missing for 90+ minutes
We’re hearing some MAJOR rumors coming from the USL World.👀👀
Can’t say exactly what, but we think
@PhilTalksFooty
might be breaking some major news in the next day or two.👀👀
Quick headline after Don Garber teased potential expansion beyond a 30th team, which is expected to be announced this year.
- Why Las Vegas and San Diego stand out
- Why
#MLS
keeps growing so rapidly
- Which markets could join as No. 31 and 32?
Quick reminder that Philadelphia Union used the Bethlehem Steel brand, one of *the* iconic soccer brands in the US, to drive interest in their reserve team and then moved them out of Bethlehem.
It bears repeating: MLS are not good faith stewards of the game.
These takes are going to be more and more common from people who hold MLS credentials. Have to keep up the momentum that USOC is not some also ran tournament.
USOC *was* soccer in the US for decades
⚽️ in 🇺🇸 is not ⚽️ in 🏴🇬🇧. We constantly compare the two, and its not 🍎to 🍎. Never has been, probably never will.
If you are comparing the USOC to FA Cup, sorry that is a non-starter.
Yup, Kylian Mbappé, the 5’ 10”, 161 lb son of Cameroonian and Algerian immigrants who was fully professional at 16 years old who’s just like 1000 dudes that play football or hoops in the States.
Doug, seriously, stop.
If you think we are using our best and brightest in soccer, I feel like you need to purchase an HD television. Mbappe is just like 1000 dudes that play football or hoops in the states, put cleats on em at 6 and train em and we will win everything
New look, same pathway.
The
#LAGalaxy
announced that the organization’s MLS NEXT Pro team will now compete under the name “Ventura County FC” (
@VC_FutbolClub
).
Ventura County’s newest professional sports team will play their home matches at California Lutheran University.
MLS contracts include the Reserve clause, which allows MLS to keep players’ rights despite the contract expiring
US Big 4 sports leagues eliminated the Reserve clause in:
MLB: 1975
NFL: 1975
NBA: 1970
NHL: 1972
Why are we ok with this organization de facto running US Soccer?
I promise I’m not trying to be pedantic but you are literally on the payroll
That should not preclude you from participating in normal discourse, but you can’t be shocked when it impacts how people receive your participation
With all this “best athlete” discussion in US Soccer, there is a position in Soccer that more than others requires size, agility, and explosiveness.
Goalkeeper.
Guess what position the US already consistently produces pros in?
F***IN GOALKEEPER
My ideal structure:
USL Premier - 20 teams : Single Table
USL Champ - 28 teams : 2 Conferences
USL L1 - Flexible Team Count : At least 4 Regional Divisions : Travel Limited
USL L2 - Remains Amateur
*All Expansion teams post-launch of structure must start in L1 or L2*
Fascinating stuff about the three-league option for pro-rel in the USL. This came up in the reporting over the summer, too, and I delineated what that model could look like in practice:
This situation in Indy isn’t competition.
One team has existed for 11 years and is well-supported in the city.
MLS isn’t competing, they came in and promised a chance at an expansion team sometime in the future.
This is mob shit.
