Are you a manufacturer who can retool to manufacture critical medical equipment?
If your answer is "yes", the federal government wants to hear from you ASAP. The need for ventilators and N95 safety masks is particularly acute. Please contact celine.caira

The demonstrations in Ottawa are damaging local businesses, disrupting the lives of thousands of people and costing taxpayers millions of dollars. Everyone has a right to express their views and the demonstrators have certainly been heard. Time to peacefully return home now.
Lots of loose talk about invoking the federal Emergencies Act. As Minister of National Defence, I brought in the Act. If people are speaking about calling in the military, they should be aware that it's the National Defence Act that applies to military aid to the civil power. 1/2
This is an urgent call to Canadian businesses. Frontline medical workers need protection. If your business has extra N95 face masks, safety glasses, sanitized goggles, isolation gowns or coveralls, sanitizer or latex, nitrile or vinyl gloves, contact local medical authorities.
”The manufacturing sector lost 23,000 jobs...while the construction sector lost 21,000. The losses were offset in part by an increase of 20,000 jobs working in public administration...” We’re replacing private sector jobs with gov’t jobs. Not a good trend.
Message to government: There’s a problem here - fix it! Our goal should be to make travelling to Canada as enjoyable and frictionless as possible. Instead, our border communities are losing yet another summer tourist season.
The $250 PCR test that applies only to people coming into Canada is a regressive tax that penalizes seniors and families. We require everyone to be double-vaccinated. Let’s remove the unnecessary friction that keeps people from having more normal lives.
CN is one of the best-managed and most successful companies in Canada. MPs of all parties must understand that our economy can no longer be ignored. The election is over. We must now deal with the urgent issues that weren’t discussed in the campaign.
It’s hard to understand why this seems so difficult. Why would any Canadian oppose knowing if a foreign government was paying someone to influence Canada’s policies? Let the sunshine in!
The federal government has decided to refuse the changes needed to fix Bill C-69. The Canadian Chamber of Commerce cannot support a bill that is discriminatory and unfair, that will drive investment away and that divides Canada.
Thank you Premier
@ABDanielleSmith
for your leadership in calling for an urgently needed resolution to the strike affecting Canada’s West Coast ports, as well as for taking the time to discuss trade infrastructure this morning.
As MPs debate the Emergencies Act, they should realize that the police are being forced to deal with a breakdown in our political system. A healthy democracy requires that we each respect the rule of law and understand the difference between an opponent and an enemy. 1/2

Norway, which is firmly committed to fighting climate change, is doing all it can to meet the energy needs of our democratic allies. Why isn’t 🇨🇦 doing more to use our resources to help our friends in their time of need?
The fight over Trans Mountain isn’t between the people of BC and the people of Alberta. It’s between the government of BC and Canada. Ottawa must defend the national interest. Alberta & BC businesses must not become collateral damage in a squabble between politicians.

When I brought in the Emergencies Act 35 years ago, I wished that it would never need to be used, but I knew that there would inevitably be future crises and that it was essential to protect the basic rights of Canadians even in an emergency.
From the archive—November 16, 1987:
Defence Minister Perrin Beatty speaks in the House of Commons as MPs begin deliberation on Bill C-77, legislation to enact the Emergencies Act, which would replace the War Measures Act.

Food, fuel and fertilizer. Canada has an abundance of what the world desperately needs, and we produce it responsibly. With government leadership, this could be Canada’s moment.
From today’s New York Times. Americans are being told how getting vaccinated and bringing infection rates down will help them get their lives back. Shouldn’t Canadian governments also set out clear plans? Enough fear. Time to offer hope if we all do our parts.
This is an important step forward by the Government of Alberta toward dismantling the barriers that divide Canadians. Thank you for leading the way,
@jkenney
! We hope all provinces will follow your example.
We are in week 3 of the illegal blockades, which have already cost Canadians hundreds of millions of dollars. Expect more layoffs and growing shortages if the disruptions continue this week. Far too many ordinary Canadians are being hurt!

When politics becomes tribal, whose side you’re on becomes more important than what you believe in. Ordinary people become radicalized, and slogans, shouting and illegality replace civil debate. We all lose. 2/2
The illegal shutdowns of essential infrastructure are damaging the Canadian economy and holding to ransom many thousands of ordinary Canadians who need access to these services. It’s time for governments to reestablish the rule of law.

Ottawa solves one problem, the absurd PCR test for vaccinated Cdns who're away for under 72 hours, by creating a new one that will punish Cdn border communities. Cdn shoppers can go south, but Americans can't come north for their Xmas shopping. A heavy blow for small business!
Under Brian Mulroney’s leadership, Canada became more confident, more prosperous, and more respected in the world. I will always be grateful to have known him and to have had the privilege of serving with him.

Alberta is leading the way in eliminating economic barriers between itself and the rest of Canada. This is important leadership, particularly at a time when we need to bridge the divisions in our country. We ask all governments to follow Alberta’s example.
Very proud to share that Alberta ranked
#1
in an Internal Trade Leadership Index, largely because of our decision to unilaterally drop most of our exceptions in the Canada Free Trade Agreement.
We will keep leading on free trade and challenge other provinces to follow our lead.
Blaming Asian-Canadians for the pandemic is not only repugnant and unCanadian, but it also dangerously misdirects our efforts to control the disease. Racism wounds its victims, exposes the emptiness of its perpetrators and diminishes us all.
Today, the

Institute released a study detailing the prevalence of racism towards Chinese Canadians during COVID-19:
This alarming trend – which has been referred to as the “shadow pandemic” – hits home for me.

This proposed motion targeting opponents of Bill C-11 would seriously undermine Canadians’ democratic rights. Both the impact on organisations and individuals and the rush to act before Canadians are even aware, let alone able to be heard, are dangerous.
“No one should be feeling confident today about Canada’s energy regulatory system, least of all the federal government.” Our broken regulatory system is costing us investment, jobs and prosperity. Ottawa must fix it, not make it worse.

Rideau Hall has released the list of people whom I'll be joining on Wednesday morning to be officially inducted into the Order of Canada. When I look at their tremendous accomplishments, I feel both very honoured and very humble to be included.
The withdrawal of service by our politicians is even more serious than the withdrawal of service by our port workers. Every day more damage is done. Who will speak for Canadians?
The

dispute goes to the very ability to govern our country. It demonstrates beyond doubt that only the federal gov’t can speak for Canada. Ottawa urgently needs to convene a meeting w/ the Premiers of Alberta and BC to make it clear that we are one country, not 13.
I’ll always be grateful to Joe Clark for taking the chance to appoint a young and untested MP to his Cabinet. And I’ll always be proud that, in 9 short months, his government admitted 50,000 Vietnamese boat people and helped the American embassy staff escape from Tehran.

The Europeans are preparing to open travel this summer to vaccinated travellers. When will Canadians learn our governments' plans for people who are fully vaccinated? We may not know the timing, but there's no reason not to know the criteria.
The costly PCR test is unfairly penalizing families and discouraging fully-vaccinated tourists and businesspeople from coming to Canada. It’s time to scrap it and jointly set standards that are the same coming north as going south across our border.
When you play by the rules, spend hundreds of millions of dollars, receive the regulatory approvals and the federal government declares your project is in the national interest but you still can’t proceed, the system urgently needs to be fixed!

Instead of looking at how to fix government polices that drive prices up, Canada’s politicians want to blame business.

For too long we’ve dismantled the barriers within Canada at the pace of the slowest jurisdiction. What Alberta demonstrates here is that any province or territory can act now. All it needs is the will.
We need a partnership and a plan to supply North American oil and gas so democracies can stop subsidizing countries that invade their neighbours or repress their citizens. via

All MPs should think about this chart. Politicians say voters don’t want to hear about productivity, so they focus on redistributing income instead of on creating it. But you can’t redistribute what you don’t have. Nor can you pay for public services. 1/3

It feels like yesterday, not 47 years ago today, that Julie and I married. Until, of course, I look at the picture and wonder where that young guy went. (Julie still looks the same, though!)
The best incentive for people to get fully vaccinated is to make good on the promise give them their lives back again. We need a plan now that explains how a safe border reopening will happen. Our citizens are doing their part. Governments must do theirs.
Scotiabank calculates how many billion dollars Canada loses each year because we lack pipelines. We're giving up the equivalent of several Amazon HQ2s while buying foreign oil to heat our homes and run our cars. It's time to get our resources to market!
This was a wake-up call. It is important that we don’t simply roll over and go back to sleep. We must never allow ourselves to rely so much on one market. We urgently need to diversify our trade and to boost the competitiveness of Canadian businesses. 2/2
If the gov’t felt unvaxed truck drivers who bring us our food and essential goods were a special threat, they could long ago have worked with business and the provinces to set up clinics at truck stops or near border crossings. Instead, they chose punishment over persuasion. 2/2
The government just released its mandate letters, including for the Finance Minister. Lots about taxes and spending, but little about growth, business investment or competitiveness. When will they learn they can't spend what business doesn't produce?
This afternoon I announced that I will leave
@CdnChamberofCom
this summer, after 17 wonderful years as President and CEO. Having the opportunity to serve Canada and our business community has truly been the privilege of a lifetime. Here is my announcement.
The travel mandates are no longer justified by science.They must go. However, the pandemic isn’t over. Before the next wave, we need a plan to manage Covid without closing schools and businesses or unfairly punishing millions of Canadians.
We can’t borrow and regulate our way to prosperity. A successful recovery from the recession will need to be led by business, but government can help to clear the way. Here are my thoughts.
The crisis is serious. Instead of trying to reengineer Canada, the Throne Speech must have two priorities: (1) a coherent strategy to manage the pandemic, and (2) restoring economic growth. We need to focus less on the rainbow and more on the pot of gold.
50 years ago today, at 22, I joined a wave of new P.C. members of Parliament that included Sean O’Sullivan (who was 20), Joe Clark, Jake Epp, Harvie Andre, Flora MacDonald, Walter Baker, and John Fraser, among many others. 1/5
An historical note about the Emergencies Act (Bill C-77): Despite the govt's large majority, I accepted scores of Opposition amendments because I thought something this important must be non-partisan. It passed 3rd Reading unanimously on April 27, 1988.
“Teck's website states the project would have created 7,000 construction jobs, require up to 2,500 workers to operate, and bring in more than $70 billion in government revenue.”
This thread from Professor
@mgeist
explains why the C-18 motion remains a threat to Canadians’ rights. Today’s amendment only adds to the incoherence in the government’s handling of this issue. A dangerous precedent has been set.
The government’s handling of the Bill C-18 motion is just an utter embarrassment. I’ve now seen the actual motion and individual communications are still covered for Google. The motion only excluded “direct communications with individual Canadians back and forth” for Meta. 1/5
Here is the letter I sent today to the Ministers of Transport and Innovation, Science and Industry. Given the growing damage being done by these illegal blockades, the government must do more than "hope" that the situation will be resolved. It has to act.
Today, we issued a letter to Minister

gets it right. Having spent the week in Alberta, it’s clear to me that passing C-48 and C-69 without major amendments will seriously damage both the economy and the unity of Canada. The impact is potentially worse than the unlamented NEP.
Yes it's time to end interprovincial barriers. They drive up costs, decrease choice, undermine competitiveness & complicate business. They are illogical, unfair & unproductive. They frustrate the very idea of Canada. But for every barrier, there's a special interest to defend it.

At today’s luncheon, I was very pleased to hear Prime Minister Kishida Fumio talk about the economic relationship between 🇨🇦 and 🇯🇵, and particularly about the importance of Canadian LNG. Canada has the food, fuel and fertilizer the world needs right now. Let’s get it done!
“Enough is enough. We can’t continue to play this reckless game,” chamber president Perrin Beatty said. “The federal government can’t just close its eyes and hope for the best any longer. The damage will continue unless it acts.”
