Accidentally said “The Blood Brothers” when I meant “The Blues Brothers” and now all I can think about is a musical road comedy about The Blood Brothers getting back together.

Spotify pays $.04 per stream (thus 1,000 streams would net you $4). Bandcamp has a monthly promotion that actually encourages listeners to buy music by waving their fees on artist sales. We’ve made more money from our art on each Bandcamp Friday than we’ll *ever* see from Spotify

DIY-specific: - 30 minute sets please! (an exception would be a touring act headliner or a release show) - local bands should close & open. Stop making touring bands do this - the shows would be more successful if all the bands committed to promoting them a bit more

Literally one (1) good Bandcamp Friday nets us more as a band (and thus helps us make records, get to shows, repair gear) than multiple *years* of Spotify income.

The truth is, for a band like us, who put out our album ourselves, who paid for all of it ourselves, who book our own shows, shoot our own press photos, make our own flyers, design our own merch & art, we owe so much to the kindness of folks who share our art. A thread:

As of April 1st, Spotify has demonetized any track on the platform that receives less than 1000 streams per year. That’s an estimated 86% of tracks on the platform. This new policy will impact small artists the most — the same artists that Spotify claims to support.

Amen. One thing I truly hope disappears with our generations is the grotesque belief that you should just give up all the things you love when you hit some arbitrary number of years. Start a band, read a comic book, build LEGOs, play video games. It’s *your* life friends.

CDs are good. They’re portable and compact (it’s right there in the name!) and you can leave them in your car and they have the highest profit-margin for DIY bands. I like CDs.

The longer you make records, the more inspiring and encouraging bands like Yo La Tengo & Superchunk & Spoon & Sleater-Kinney are. You can keep making stuff. The next album can be the next time you swing for the fences all over again. Each new batch of songs can be your best yet.

Buy physical media. Is there a movie you like that is offered “permanently” on a streaming service? Buy a dvd of it. Got a favorite album you listen to all the time on Spotify? Track down a cheap used CD copy. There is no guarantee this stuff will stay available in streaming form

Honestly, I’m just compelled by bands that are in earnest about making the stuff they want to make, that have an idea & are going for it. That will always translate for the audience: caring. Pretending it doesn’t matter, feigning ironic apathy, etc… what a bore that is.

We play about 60 shows a year, which means we watch about 150 sets a year, & I can say the sets that draw the audiences in the most, that work the best for the overall show, are under 30 minutes. It’s better for the audience’s ears and feet; better for the other bands etc

I think the best art comes from creative ambitions being just a bit ahead of resources/skills. Swinging for the fences, having to improvise to find interesting answers for the stuff you can’t quite figure out at first. ‘Sgt. Pepper’ being recorded in a 4-track studio, etc
