On this day in 1998, we voted overwhelmingly for the Good Friday Agreement in simultaneous referendums:
71.1% in favour in Northern Ireland,
94.4% in favour in the Republic of Ireland.
GOOD NEWS: 932 people have been welcomed so far to Northern Ireland under the Syrian resettlement scheme.
Later this week, the 1,000th person will arrive.
We should be proud.
We can do more.

I doubt there's a single person in Ireland, north or south, who doesn't have close relatives living abroad.
Since 1700, 10 million of us have emigrated. Today, there are 1.47 million Irish-born citizens living somewhere else.
We are a nation of migrants. Respect to migrants.
We’ve only gone and done it! Thank you to everyone who played their part in this HUGE double-win for human rights in Northern Ireland.
Victory for grassroots campaigners and the politicians who represented.
Mostly though a victory for all those who need their rights upheld.
At Westminster, but thoughts with so many brave people at home.
No one on these islands has had to fight longer and harder for their human rights than the people of Northern Ireland.
Hopefully we’re near the finish line today.

Today Saudi Arabia beheaded 37 people, most of them minority Shiites, in a mass execution. It put the body and severed head of one on a pole as a public warning.
Obviously, there are differences between the Saudi state & Islamic State, but right now I’m really struggling.
Today’s mass execution of 37 people in Saudi Arabia is a chilling demonstration of the authorities’ disregard for human life.
