I seriously can not FATHOM having hundreds of people cook a secret Survival game project for YEARS at one of the most FINANCIALLY SECURE industries in the world and just waking up one day and being like "Actually? nah scrap that" ?!?!?!?? Bitch? the pizza is in the oven ?!?!
Here's my place in the Hogwarts Legacy credits, the second high budget game I've been credited in. I was the realtime technician on shoot floor helping mocap actors see their rigs in the environments. I will not be purchasing the game - it is the least I can do as an ally
Could anyone shed some light on how to build a shader like this? I have a client who wants this half split for a shot but seeing underwater PP at the same time as above is so hard

3D students be freaking out about seeing a noitceable dupe in their geo but also Diablo IV devs be just rotate 180 + translate the same stair rocks and call it a day. We stress about keeping the illusion of unique detail up - but sometimes we worry too much!

Btw if you take your photoscans color map, desaturate it, and invert it - and clamp/mult/pow it up to a sensible range, you've got a wicked roughness map for free that is mostly accurate

- hair does not visually match any known techniques to create it
- ear is mushy and weird and is a lot like bad AI hands (original ear lacked definition so it didn't know what to do)
- the specular aliased edge on the neck created a strange dangling bead

This is the most beautifully optimistic perspective. I want to live in this kind of world, the cold reality is the devs will be lucky if they can even publicly share the art they made for the project on their personal portfolios. Let alone finish it and make money off of it

One of the most toxic things on the planet in my opinion is barring artists who have worked often times more than a year on some project from showing ANY OF THEIR WORK. Imagine if you left university and the dean was like "I know you did a bunch of hard work-" /2
If game companies are going to relocate devs to fire them months after, the least they could do is allow those devs to showcase any work they want in their portfolio to help them find a new job.
As it is now, a lot of them have a say on what you share on your Artstation...

It was my first job in the industry, and I had no influence over what clients the studio decided to bring in. If I did have that kind of leverage, or held any form of seniority, I would have been an advocate against picking it up

If you flip over those little widgets and panels in the node graph, it's actually just a bunch of various river fish duct taped to raspberry pi's and various interfaces.

Another round of temp layoffs. I am one of three artist left. We used to have 15. Client is late on paying us and my paycheck isn't here yet 4 days later because of it. Really hoping the projects my bosses have lined up pop soon, getting hard to weather the storm
just how much BS they are trying to get them to poly reduce. Unless the person is like "I am going into mobile games and only mobile games" then yes - and it is important to know what you can bake down - BUT inform them it is at the cost of juicy detail in a silhouette.
AND- if you tell them to delete "faces you can't see" be damn sure that you're never going to see them. Ask them "are you ever going to simulate this falling apart? Are you ever going to look underneath this?" etc. If the answer is yes even for a moment, then keep the polygons!

despite having worked on hogwarts legacy and it being quite literally one of my first AAA titles I worked on and being very excited about it - I will not be playing it because any money to a terf is bad money and my partner is trans. And I love both goblins and jewish people
The worst thing ever is when you over-optimize a model - because you can not go back the other way to retrieve extra detail. If you have a shit ton of geometry to work with as your base line, you can always topo over, LOD away, and decimate shit to be where you need it.
And most of the time - we want these juniors making work that looks GOOD AF- catches the eye! And yes, technical wireframes and breakdowns are important and lovely, even if you have more of a mid poly model, but it needs to look GOOD y'all not like a 5 triangle silhouette of ASS
Gosh, as someone already living paycheck to paycheck there's really no way to convey the paralyzing dread that takes over you waiting to hear back from applications, and fearing that you might not make it through the winter.
Hard to enjoy anything r now, and time makes it worse.

Oh and the beauty mark on the nose is like almost all black and the only way you get that in zbrush is by painting a mask on your mesh (which no one in their right mind would do a beauty render and have some masked bits n bobs)

Outsourcing teams actually aren't really given free game copies all the time, part of it could be since I left before the game was properly nearing release but only clients we worked with in excess seem to gift game copies like if they book a ton of shoots and spend lots of money

My UE tip of the day is to edit materials that only have a multiply, to include a power / exponent in front of it as well. This helps drive contrast, and is so needed when you have muddy opacity maps or you lack contrast. Default Megascans decal only has multiply, so I changed it

ngl I was intimidated by trying to model some fancier bigger tents but then I remembered how fun the zbrush cloth brushes are and now i'm vibing making cute little tent folds. and then i get to add a ton of rope!!! yippeeee!!!
"But Parker, that's for the sculpting phase and zbrush" I hear you say. Yes, but if you are trying to bake a perfectly smooth cylinder onto a cylinder with only 10 edges or some shit, you are gonna see some SERIOUS wonky shit with it baking down if you get too close.

Ah, sorry! This comes from mocap culture. Since they can literally work on as many 6 or more triple A titles over the course of a year. This is common place for mocap, since clients will book a set amount of days to create anim, and mocap actors+shoot crew is pretty expensive.
playing around with a double tall modular piece - wanted part of the walls to be barrels they've cut out and placed windows inside of - not sure how I feel about it yet but it's somethin! This also helps me break the boring elevation in there with a fun little platform I can make

1 year of focusing on an NDA title had me like this but it's okay because we stopped working on it yesterday but I still kind of look like this because it will be my strongest folio work and I can't show it until it comes out
I'm in that weird spot where I feel super under qualified and super over qualified at the same time for all the roles I'm applying to.

The majority of the devs working on the project seem to have positive things to say about the game. The higher ups lacked the willingness to expand the team leading up to launch for whatever reason- can't say for certain but smells like they want to spend less for more
Man, life is hard. I've been in a rut recently, like really bad. I struggle to do my dishes, I've been feeling sick for the past 2-3 weeks, and to top it off my dad is in another province dying.

Does any other 3D artist have a habit of taking their modeling/sculpting to 500 - and by that I mean if your scene has like 40 assets you need to make, you would rather model them *all* first, then *all* get a uv unwrap, then *all* get textured - am I a maniac for that?
My eyebrows shot off my face because a dev studio I really respect just messaged me and wants me to do their fluid system with fluid ninja live and like, damn, I'm honoured, but I should probably learn more about fluid ninja, I feel under prepared! But I want to take the job
Wild to me that my choice to not buy or play a video game warrants people emailing my boss and trying to expose me for my views and get me fired-

Do you realize how privileged this sounds? This is literally like asking someone to make a custom suit of armour and then being upset that it takes an artisan TIME to EXECUTE their CRAFT. if you want, you can buy your armour off Wish. Or you can wait patiently and professionally.

Cosmic 11-12 - crazy what a few bitmaps, animated disorder in a make it tile node, and some camera shader magic, and clouds will getcha. this was so helpful also <3
I investigated what all the blend modes do straight away, but it's super important to know what all the blend modes do! This guy covers it awesome and in depth so you never have to guess ever again in substance painter/designer.
