I am heartbroken by Dublin; the children who were stabbed, the crowds now attacking the Luas, law enforcement. A centre for refugees attacked, TCD in lockdown, Arnotts staff hiding on the 3rd floor from a rampaging mob. Off to pick up my wife who has been seeing patients in town.

Cameron was due to face PMQs as opposition leader the day after his son Ivan died, aged six. But Gordon Brown adjourned the house for the day so he wouldn’t have to. Brown had also lost a daughter, Jennifer, a few days after her birth. Our politics used to be capable of this.

Holles Street, a blowy night. After a junior reg from Cork, and a midwife from Donegal, I was first to hold you. You were prised from my arms at 4 am by a nurse who commanded me to go away, shower and sleep, but promised at 7 I would be let back in and allowed hold you some more.

Just a flashback to when Queen Elizabeth became the first UK monarch in 100 years to visit Ireland, laid a wreath in the Garden of Remembrance, wore green, visited Croke Park, chatted with fishmongers, spoke Irish. Her very best ever state visit, said Mary McAleese. God save her.

My friend, who is from Eastern Europe and works in the hotel where we live, says the guests ‘often speak in Irish downstairs so we won’t understand’. So I’ve started teaching her Irish. Ours is not a language that excludes.
