I'm a non-binary lawyer and the judgment of Taylor v Jaguar Land Rover published this week means a lot for the non-binary community. Here are the main points to take away (a thread) /1

In the reasons, the judge held that non-binary and gender fluid could be protected under the Equality Act 2010 (s.7, gender recognition). This means that people with gender non-confirming identities should now be protected in the work place from discrimination /5

(5) Industries that are more ‘traditional’ cannot be somehow exempt from having to get rid of discrimination in the workplace. The ramifications of such comments on the individual can be catastrophic and, as in the JLR’s case, similarly negative for the employer. /10

I was asked why I'm sceptical of the anti-trans/"gender critical" movement. For me, it's their authoritarianism. And I find their obsession other people's genitalia odd. If you don't think people can change sex then don't have a sex change. But just let other people live.

@swaledalebirds_ @CL4M0art I would add that law has many functions. It can be a preventative tool to stop people discriminating if they know it is in place, but also acts as a remedy for those who have been mistreated under it. Society will never be perfect so it is important that structures are in place.

@WeAreAdvocate @gardencourtlaw I take this opportunity to remind any practising barristers renewing their practising certificate this year to donate to Advocate - they only ask for £35 but last year 7,500 barristers donated, making up 42% of Advocate’s income for that year. #ProBono35
