Macroeconomics refresher: Let Y = GDP C = consumption I = investment G = government spending X = exports N = imports (on final goods) Where: Y = C + I + G + X - N A consistent measure of how socialist an economy/administration is will always be: Degree of Socialism = G/Y

@Chesschick01 @WallStreetSilv This is a pretty unhinged comment. Although the dollar has seen some minor draw-down (Putin not wrong here), its price shows this hasn’t been significant—meaning, it’s not even close to being unloaded as world reserve currency, which is not an off-on determination to begin with.

Of the “PIGS,” #Spain is easily the most corrupt, and either #Portugal or #Italy the least corrupt, with #Greece now likely less corrupt than Spain. Simply watch how they have handled the #Catalonia question. How does the @EU_Commission or #EU law tolerate this abuse of justice?

So funny. He thinks #OPEC controls/influences oil prices, when it has failed to act substantially as even a price-influencing cartel since late 1980s. US output growth has made OPEC even less relevant. Oil supply is quite elastic: OPEC cuts won’t increase prices significantly.

Although (a) they will not likely cut that much (and have signaled as much), and (b) supply is too elastic for the larger cut to matter as much as @realDonaldTrump thinks it will, it’s funny to watch, since the “deal” net harms both the US and Mexican economies.

Wrong. Petroleum production represents just under 10% of Canada’s GDP (smaller proportion in US). OPEC+ only “saves” those relative few jobs at the margin while taking many more jobs out of the rest (90%) the economy. Federal “supports” would only increase the deadweight loss.

The “US position” on oil price is isn’t remotely that “value of USD is backed up by world oil reserves,” because it isn’t, and that isn’t close to the case. Low sustained oil prices only increase the value of the dollar, necessarily (increases aggregate supply). #OOTT #opec

What’s great about today: so many selling at discounts what global demand is guaranteed to pull back up (especially on petroleum-related assets). It may last a while longer, as we find other nice discounts in related industries. Main adjustment needed is on currency expectations.

More evidence that @realDonaldTrump doesn’t know how any of this works. He helped orchestrate a trigger to sell off storage with his deal on “OPEC+”, and doesn’t seem to realize that the oil price war only helps Americans (at least 92 percent of them by GDP sector share).

President Donald Trump is considering all options available to him to make the Saudis pay for the oil price war as the crash that followed has done significant damage to the U.S. oil industry

It’s not just a bad idea, but an extremely stupid idea. Giving government the power to muscle around private companies and markets is absolutely reckless, in both economic and civil liberty terms. More sober ideas are available: like simply leave them alone.

Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram all going down at the same time sure seems like an easily-understandable and publicly-popular example of why breaking up a certain monopoly into at least three pieces might not be a bad idea. Somebody should tell Elizabeth Warren.

Is you want big partisan dishonesty, watch @dagenmcdowell on @marklevinshow on @FoxNews —first misses saying @federalreserve is “part” of inflation story—without admitting it’s most of the story. Then asserts Trump “would’ve fired” Powell, when Trump appointed him—to print money.

Russia has already declared war against the west. They did not need to be the aggressor in any case, starting with the violent taking of Crimea, and now in eastern Ukraine. Nothing would be improper or our of place to have Putin arrested according to the ICC arrest warrant.

The @JohnsHopkinsSPH “sick map” is now failing to show recoveries accurately for a day or more: no US states appear to have recoveries, and a mysterious US point with “1 case” along the KS/OK border says “121 recovered” with “120 active.” Can we get this right? @WHO

Only people who don’t understand basic supply and demand principles say that “speculators drive up prices” as any sort of general rule. Instead, they stabilize/correct price series. Basic supply-demand tells you why.

@gulf_intel @IEA @ADNOCGroup @enoc_official @SPGCI @aramco @vitolnews The main thing to understand is that OPEC+ has not only had no control over oil prices since the late 1980s, they have largely been powerless to even influence prices in that time. Why? They have lacked two things cartels need: cooperation and very inelastic supply.
