lol This implies that Sonic Team WANTS to do momentum physics but can't. The current Sonic Team simply doesn't want to. Ever since Unleashed, Sonic functions like a race car not a pinball. And I don't hate either, but it's definitely a choice not incompetence.

New patch for Sonic Drift 16-bit demo just dropped, now you can re-bind the controls to use custom mapping. I was able to quickly reuse code from STT 16-bit, so yay.
