For most matching procedures, the average treatment effect implies that the 18 rallies subsequently increased confirmed cases by more than 250 per 100,000 residents. Extrapolating to the population, the rallies resulted in more than 30,000 incremental COVID-19 cases. (5/N)

On 4/29/2022, United staff did not let me board my plane to Guam in spite of my valid student visa -- saying I'd require a tourist visa. I explained that I'd lose my student visa if I entered on a tourist visa, but was pressured to apply for the tourist visa on the spot.

Check out the job market paper of my brilliant class and office mate,

! He put together an impressive data set to understand the persistence of policy choices in the US (and internationally)!
📈Job market paper time📉
I’m excited to finally share my job market paper! My JMP studies whether and why policy choices are stubbornly persistent.
For example, Oregon has an income tax, but Washington doesn’t—seemingly because of nearly century-old choices. Is this typical?

We use the estimated model to predict post-event confirmed COVID-19 cases for the rally county. The difference between the actual and predicted incidence is an estimate of the treatment effect. We then calculate the average treatment effect across event counties. (4/N)
Applying county-specific post-event death rates, we conclude that the rallies likely led to more than 700 deaths (not necessarily among attendees). (6/N)
We voted tenure to the third woman ever in Economics at Stanford (of course, deans et al still have to decide...). The second while having her career only at Stanford. I look forward to this becoming normal and just celebrate the fact of tenure: Congrats

To test for pre-trends and whether our method systematically mispredicts for event counties, we perform the same analysis for "placebo events" 10 weeks before the actual events. The pseudo-treatment effects are small, slightly negative, and statistically insignificant. (7/N)

Such important work!! Super happy about the policy implications and selfishly happy that I can now apply for USAID grants since my implementing partner (understandably) did not want to commit to never promoting abortion even if it was in the interest of a woman's health.
As expected, Biden rescinded the Mexico City Policy - which we showed (see ⬇️) actually results in MORE abortions. Rescinding this policy is a necessary first step - but Congress should push for a legislative solution!
@amybarnhorst
Are you afraid of retaliation for making the names public? People like this should be exposed and removed from academia. And I don't see an angle in which any reasonable person could accuse you of any wrongdoing..
While great that Twitter finally deleted Trump's tweets, it hasn't done enough to limit the spread of conspiracy theories & incitements of violence. Like every Republican who condoned the lies, Twitter & Facebook contributed to the actions today-it's too late to cleanse yourself

Here is the ES with county & week x state FEs & time-varying restrictions (masks & shelter-in-place), showing coefficients from -5 to +4 (so all coeffs. are based on the same set of event counties). There is no effect in the weeks before but builds up significantly after. (3/N)

I hereby claim the completion of my job market paper. I don’t know what it’s about - but it’s a TREMENDOUS SUCCESS! I’ve done a very good job! The best job!
Biden is leading Trump by 8 ppts again among registered voters. Why can't I feel completely happy about it? I guess because there's still this utter sadness and incomprehension that 43% of the people in my chosen home country support a racist and mysognystic autocrat.
After looking at the raw data, we used the ES to test for a potential data pattern. While we obtained results similar to those shown in the paper, we did not include it as the ES may not sufficiently capture the heterogeneity of the dynamic process across counties. (2/N)
PS: Credit where credit is due. Mark Duggan saw an earlier version & told us to include the ES graph before circulating the paper. Mark – you were right!!! 😊 (N+1/N)

Given the useful feedback we have been receiving, we will likely include some version of the ES in the next draft and explain the advantages of our method. Thanks a ton!! (N/N)
Luckily, I received the student visa after the gate had closed -- because Stanford's international office told me -- i) I totally could have entered Guam on my student visa, ii) had I entered on a tourist visa, I'd have lost my student visa and my post-degree work authorization.

Probably not, unfortunately! Impact depends on the pre-event trajectory, which is why we match on the levels in the 10 periods before the rally. COVID levels during the early part of the pandemic were so low that we wouldn’t expect these events to have comparable effects.
