A lot of the rents I'm seeing in New York City have DOUBLED from where they were 3-4 years ago. Salaries certainly haven't kept up. I don't think people are grasping how dire the situation is out here.

Every realtor in NYC is like "This deep-Brooklyn junior 1-bedroom is $5k/mo and only a 20-minute walk from the nearest C train!" And then when you demean yourself enough to inquire they say "the only time I can show it is at 3:00 pm on a weekday and I charge a $7k fee, btw."

This GDP report really reinforces whatever you thought before the report. It's consistent with soft landing: Consumption is slowing as Fed wants! That's good news. (My take.) It's consistent with recession forecasts: Growth is slowing! Economic is heading to a downturn!

My best housing tip as a 5th generation renter in NYC? Proximity to the subway is more important than proximity to the city. Most stops are ~2 minutes apart. So if you’re a 15 minute walk to the train you may find a shorter commute and a nicer, cheaper place three stops out.

A 285 sq ft studio in Manhattan is renting for $3275. Last year it went for under $2000. Fed Chair Powell told me that "shelter inflation is going to remain high for some time." NYC mayor Adams, meanwhile, has added an anti-rent control member to the rent guidelines board.
