There are many lessons here but those lessons would require a complete overhaul of game industry structure.
Larian did everything that modern capitalism tells you not to do. I admire the courage of that team and it's leadership because the pressure must have been immense.
OK. I am mad enough to burn some bridges. Because honestly, what's the point of a bridge that I am not allowed to cross.
So here is a thread about Platform X. I will not be defining Platform X but it's the operator of a very successful console and does not have Games Pass!
@RikuKat
@EA
My heart breaks for you. This same thing happened with
@OneratDylan
and us as we launched Elden. Top of popular upcoming and then... boom.
Was also an EA shadow drop.
And please bear in mind I am an English speaking British guy who can travel the world, attend showcases, shake hands and meet with power in these situations. If this is my experience imagine what it's like for someone without my level of priviledge.
Platform X gives developers no ability to manage their games. In order to get promotion you must jump through hoops, beg and plead for any level of promotion. And a blog is not as good as they think it is.
If Platform X doesn't like your game, no fanfare no feature no love.
So for any gamers who have wandered in here. Next time you're unhappy about your game never being discounted on Platform X or a game you want not launching on Platform X! Please go and complain to Platform X!
Oh but don't worry. There is a way to guarantee you get featured! All you need to do is spend a VERY reasonable minimum of 25,000 USD to get featuring. Oh and then 30% of your subsequent earnings....
Bargain!
There is NOTHING you can do to fix this.
Wishlists have no effect, so all your personal marketing means nothing to Platform X.
All that matters is their evaluation. How is this evaluation done? Dunno, they don't share that, nor will they share the value they ascribe to my game
BTW, you cannot even do a launch discount without their approval and it is "very limited"
That's right.... You can't do the thing that ever other platform does meaning the Platform X owners will always get the worst deal!
So before you launch, you need to
1. Develop the game for Platform X
2. Get through their incredibly difficult lotcheck spread over 3 generations of backend software
3. Submit a Platform X specific trailer
4. Write a Platform X Blog which
5. Submit multiple forms for social media
In conclusion, Platform X is super successful and awesome hardware but their backend and process if straight out of the early 00s.
I have no idea how to succeed on this platform and they wont tell me. Even if I do succeed, they may screw me anyway...
Oh for 3 and 4 you need to go through an account manager, when asked how to get an account manager, we were told
"I'm not sure, they are assigned by resources"
And as we now know, there's no way to know what resource level you have been assigned.
Now when your game is on the platform, likely without any support from Platform X, you may think, no problem, I can sync up discounts on Platform X with Steam and others...
Wrong!
Discounts are invite only and invites are also "very limited"
It's been literal years since we could put a title of ours in discount, and I spoke to some other VERY POPULAR devs today and they had the same experience.
So even if your game does well at launch and thrives on other platforms, you may still never be invited? Y? who knows?
Indie Game Review: This game is gorgeous and fun but the last boss was hard and it crashed once 7 out of 10
AAA Game Review: Despite a rough start and many bugs, this is step in the right direction for Studio Big Boi who have refined their decade old formula. 8.5/10
Our friends from
@NewBlood
released Gloomwood toda... ekhm... yesterday.
Congratulations on the launch, guys! It looks awesome and we can't wait to play it! ๐ค
Hello everyone!
I am working on a game that touches on the lives of sex workers. I am keen for the developers to speak to people who work in this industry. Can be anonymous or credited and I am happy to discuss paying for your time.
My DMs are open and RTs are appreciated.
OK, so today is Steam Next Fest which means a punch of publishers are going to reach out to a bunch of indie devs.
Here's some tips for indie devs:
1. Don't accept the first offer.
2. Talk to a lawyer.
3. Trust your gut.
4. Don't let yourself be rushed.
@BBCBreaking
Ah yes. The government investigating the government for making deals with friends of the government. I look forward to reading the โnothing to see hereโ report in 3- 5 years.
@DreamcastGuy
A very long time ago, someone DMd me saying they wanted to buy a game of ours but Steam didn't accept their currency and we didn't see Steam Keys in their regional stores. I apologized and send him a Pirate Bay link.
What do you want to bet that the FMV game you are all dunking on will get more media attention than the the one we launched earlier this year that had a diverse cast, and was developed and published by a multicultural team?
Media friends and journalists of all sizes, please feast your eyes on this thread of incredible games from developers outside of US and Europe. Let's help these devs get the attention they deserve!
I will never understand the HEINOUS practice of not telling developers how many copies of their gam have been sold. This bizarre norm in the industry is so obviously detrimental to developers I don't understand how ot why it exists and judge anyone who operates this way
Outriders' developer says it doesn't know how many copies the game has sold and hasn't earned any royalties from the game, suggesting it hasn't been profitable for publisher Square Enix.
Yo, if you're a game dev in a developing that wants to go to GDC but cannot because of Visas, Costs, Etc. please reply to this thread or DM me. I have a plan in the works but the more evidence I have that this is necessary, the better. RTs Appreciated.

It is so sad you see the world through this lense. I'm married with a baby on the way and I support my peers in the industry. Don't be gross.
I cannot believe that Fahmi is gone. He helped me when we were journalists together, we moved into games at a similar time, and he has been a constant source of support and inspiration. I cannot put into words how much I will miss him. The world is a worse place now.
Good time to remind everyone that our next game was developed in Taiwan and tells the tale of a local hero stealing from the rich and giving to the poor.
Support Asian devs telling Asian stories.
3. I would love my games to be in Games Pass but that's and Xbox decision, Games Pass was amazing for SINNER.
4. None of the platforms are perfect and none of them are worth your undying loyalty. Support game creators rather than platforms!
I have real difficulty finding games that are set in Asia (despite being based in Asia) because developers are convinced that western press wonโt care and western players wonโt buy. Iโm going to do everything I can to prove the opposite with this game.
My 15 mins is nearly over but let's turn negative into positive! Non-Euro American game devs, reply to this with your game and a GIF. In two days I will make a thread and send to every journalist who reached out to me!
I'll start- The Legend of Tianding

OK. I am getting a lot of questions so it is probably worth clarifying a few things from my end.
1. Every game we publish is pitched to every platform to gauge interest.
2. We launch everything on PC and Switch as it's the systems are the simplest and the revenue is reliable.
Just a reminder that I am ETERNALLY looking for more horror games to play, to support, to sign, to fund. Especially horror games that do exciting things with the genre.
Thank you to everyone who spoke up, I was almost certain that I was going to look like a bitter deranged loser having a tantrum but seeing so many peers come forward has made me think that I was probably right to lose my temper so publically.
๐ค Imagine a maze
๐ค Filled with locked doors and monsters
๐ค You have two weapons & all the bullettime,superspeed,superpowers you could ask for
Devilated - a first-person shooter packed with 30 levels of monsters, weapons, and plenty of ultraviolence.
OUT NOW IN EARLY ACCESS!
I was privileged enough to meet developers at
#PGDX
in Manilla. I took part in two publishing panels and met many (but not enough) developers.
The region is in a very exciting place, but there's a few pieces of advice that I gave a dozen times and will again. Here they are:
I just don't know what to say. I've been randomly crying for 24 hours. Can barely focus on work. I took my friendship with this beautiful man for granted because I assumed he would always be there. I wish I had reached out more, shared more, said more.
I canโt believe you hopped on that train to heaven so soon.
I thought we were going to hangout again after the pandemic.
I thought weโll get to talk and tell jokes again on our random SemakFM sessions.
I miss you, Fahmi.
If you want to support the developers of Devotion, pick ups their amazing other title Detention! And leave a nice review as it was review bombed after these events!
Vigil: The Longest Night is doing so well, I genuinely had a little cry. This was a big one for us and there was a lot riding on it. So THANK you to everyone who send a bug report, left a review, met Leila, and visited Maye.
I am so happy to be on this journey with you all!
I recently adopted a new look and my wife (English second language) has been calling me "Handsome Bird" for 2 days.
Today I realized she is actually calling me Heisenberg after the character in Breaking Bad.
We actually did release a game, sold really well, loads of visibility, send out numerous press releases a month before launch and got almost zero coverage from Western Press.
But really glad to know Cliff is thinking about making something!
Hello all
We had an issue with Steam last night that removed our store page, instead of launching the game, and seems to have had a major effect on our visibility!
It would be MASSIVELY appreciated if you would give a retweet, a like, or leave a review to help with the situation
โ๏ธ๐ฉ๏ธHazel Sky, a bittersweet story of love, ambition, & fate is out now!
