Perhaps the most interesting result: Gary Peters (D) holds just a 1 point lead over John James (R), 43-42, in the race for US Senate in Michigan, down from a 10 point lead in June

Joe Biden leads in Wisconsin and Michigan by a significant margin, according to new Times/Siena polls. Biden leads Trump by 10 in Wisconsin, 51 to 41 percent. Biden leads by 8 in Michigan, 48 to 40

The polls offered little reason to think that the last week's events had worked in the president's favor, at a time when every week counts. Voters overwhelmingly thought he should have participated in the virtual debate, and thought Harris won the VP debate

The Trump campaign can at least hope that this week's events will be somewhat better, as a plurality of voters in MI/WI support the Barrett nomination *and* thought the Senate should act on her nomination before the election

@Nate_Cohn Because John James is a decent candidate that's been running mostly positive and uplifting ads saying we've got to stop tearing each other down (even though he supports Trump). He has built a name for himself over the past few years. Most people here don't know Gary Peters.

@Nate_Cohn Does this make any sense with Biden leading by a lot more?

@Nate_Cohn The Biden lead is something of an answer to the 538 question "will Biden's lead in state polls migrate to match national polls?" But the Senate race is weird, and deserves attention - what the heck is going on?

@Nate_Cohn have to assume Peters wins if Biden gets a good margin.

@Nate_Cohn Whaaaat? How does that reconcile with Biden’s lead in MI? Did something specific happen in that senate race to lead to that decoupling?

@Nate_Cohn Yeah this result is interesting. I think Peters wins between 5 to 10 points just do to Biden’s coattails
