Regional/State Thread: I know there's a lot of talk about regional venues going on right now, and this triggered a thought of mine regarding the overall NYSPHSAA playoff structure. A lot of thoughts here, so buckle up:
AA: Cardinal Hayes
A: Pittsford-Mendon
B: Portledge
C: Moriah
D: Avoca/Prattsburgh
Thatโs where we stand with

rankings as we ring in the New Yearโฆletโs see how much it changes or stays the same come mid-to-late March of 2022
Overall Top 12 Large Schools:
1 LuHi (23-2)
2 South Shore (27-5)
3 Albany Academy (17-3)
4 Christ The King (19-10)
5 Cardinal Hayes (23-6)
6 Bishop Loughlin (23-4)
7 Jefferson (24-8)
8 St. Raymond (20-7)
9 Stepinac (14-16)
10 Park (25-2)
11 Xaverian (20-8)
12 West Genesee (22-4)
This team absolutely obliterated a very good Fordham Prep side. Canisius might be the favorite to end the season as the best overall Class A school in the state
Happy New Year! Our latest rankings are up; hereโs a snippet of the AA field.
Back to 5 sets of rankings as C and D have been split. As it turns out, it was a bit convoluted to keep those smallest classifications together

Potentially fixing the Section 6 Sectional process - begin thread
-Please note these are my own thoughts...I'd love to see this change, but I won't be actively pursuing it.
Over the years, I've noticed that the sectional seedings for some teams are wacky, to put it mildly
Here's the official statement (thanks Coach Tippy) regarding tonight's PSAL 4A final cancellation. South Shore evidently playing a 20 year old.
In theory, the Federation tournament is a great idea, but not when one of its cogs is constantly riddled with scandal. Sad.
Echo these thoughts. I appreciate the coaches/schools who tweet out the results, win or lose. People will eventually find out anyway, but this...this is the best look
Gorton wins its 1st game after 0-14 start. Letโs give coach Malcolm Wright some love. While some โforgetโ after Lโs, he tweeted the score after EVERY game, inc some tough defeats.
Wright is always positive and encouraging. His players will benefit from his leadership for life

Our first set of NY State rankings can now be found on the websiteโฆbroken down into 4 groups: AA, A, B and C&D combined.
The records are through all games (known) as of 12/20 - we will likely update these weekly publicly!
Section II is now 5-0 on the boys side
This section has a lot of high quality teams in every classification; this is not a product of having home court advantage this weekend. Reducing the Section's collective success to that geographical tidbit would be a lazy thought
We released our Top 100 Large and Small school polls earlier today
Aaaaaand immediately there are results coming in from all over the State that make me want to delete the file and start from scratch
I guess itโs a good thing though; a lot of competitive teams out there!

Pat the back of your own shoulder your school is part of this list
This is just ridiculous
Growing up in Westchester let me tell you if you donโt know...Itโs not like Mamaroneck has been a historically bad program by any means. In fact, theyโre typically competitive. Itโs more about how consistently elite Mount Vernon has been for decades
I'm going to attempt to predict all five NYSPHSAA brackets in this thread. An impossible task, and some really tough decisions to be made in the q'final round. Just note I'm not 'slighting' or 'disrespecting' your team by not picking them. They're all good at this point:
Forewarning to those who actually follow our updated Top 100 rankings daily - it's time to shoot Greeley way up the list; their losses came without two impact players...and it could be argued that with them all season, they'd be 18-0
*Personal opinion*, but it might be time to revisit the sectional seeding points in Section VI. Perhaps using something similar to what Section 1 uses, where teams that challenge themselves get bonus pts.
There may be 8 separate coin flips coming in the seeding process...
We love when teams schedule tough...and itโs not forgotten come time to rank state wide. Sometimes 14-10 is a lot better than 19-5, just need to look a little closer
This is the deepest Class B section in the state this year, no doubt.

@MsgrFarrellHS
Absolutely no disrespect to S7 & S10, but if a neighboring champ has to navigate thru 20 teams just to play a sub-regional game while one of 7/10's sectional winner had to go through 2-3 teams, I think a direct ticket to the regional final belongs to the large section, annually
Another 288 basketball games coming your way tonight in New York...
Playoff pictures are starting to take shape, but this next week or so is crucial for seeding - especially those sections that don't allow all teams to qualify for Sectionals!
Today's games in NY:
NYSPHSAA
D Regional final: Hamilton (3) v Heuvelton (10)
C Regional final: Haldane (1) v Pierson (11)
B Regional final: Valhalla (1) v Southampton (11)
PSAL
A Q'final: Epic South v Brooklyn Law & Tech
B Q'final: Brooklyn College Academy v Scholars Academy
What a nightmare this has become. At one point does the PSAL start addressing the vast volume of ineligibility issues and hand down huge, program-changing sanctions?
At the same time, how are these situations always uncovered AFTER the games have been played?
Despite some of the rumors going around, I'm told no other teams have been DQd from the PSAL playoffs.
HOWEVER - the league IS reviewing eligibility of players on all 3 remaining teams (Eagle BX, Eagle BK & South Shore), & the 2nd semifinal was moved from Tuesday to Wednesday
172 games scheduled for tonight throughout New York State, that is, assuming the last 4 Section IX games scheduled actually go off (so maybe it's really 168). Plenty of games left on the schedule everywhere, as most schools are feeling the backloaded effects of past ppd games
Rankings for all of our "Tiers" updated through games played/results known as of 12/30

I know we cover NY boys hoops, but given the fact some of the schools play within the NEPSAC confines, we're privy to the records of schools outside the state as well. And with that being said, the top two Brewster Academy prep teams are currently a combined 27-0 right now!
Weโre putting the finishing touches on some Sectionsโ schedules, but you should start to see some results roll in on the schedule pages; particularly out of PSAL and NYSAIS, who are already under way. Standings likely to be updated when more teams get a game under their belt
Thanksgiving is always an A+ holiday, but itโs amplified by the fact that NY state comes alive on the hardwood right about now. Turkey Day tournaments on deck for Black Friday!
We will probably put together a Top ___ schools rankings for this year, but if we did it by class, Timon probably ranks atop the class B schools...another fantastic W
Lowville, Briarcliff, Center Moriches, Holland Patent, Wayne, Chester, Friends Academy...donโt worry, we see you
FINAL:
Timon 60, Canisiusย 54
A 22-12 final frame by Timon clinches the

Another big performance by The General as Jamyier Patton scores 18 of his game-high 28 pts in the 2nd half. Kamar Goudelock adds 15 pts for Timon in the win
295 high school basketball games coming your way today in New York.
And I decide to schedule a U10 girls all morning soccer festival in the AM tomorrow ๐. Please be patient with tomorrowโs updates related to tonightโs results. Just know theyโll be posted eventually!

Wolves finish the year with a win at Saunders 52-51. Extremely proud of my group of young men who finished what they started despite the circumstances. Year finished in perfect fashion with Sr. Captain Kavon Dixon nailing a half court buzzer beating.

This year in particular, Southwestern & Fredonia, both in Class B, really caught my eye. They shouldn't have been as low as they were (16th and 10th respectively). Their sectional wins did not come as a surprise to me, based on who & how they played this season...
S1 AA quarters (4)
CHSAA: BQ/Queens Final, Intersectional opening round game, NSCHSAA quarters (4)
PSAL: 1 non-league game (1)
NYSAIS: B semis & C quarters (6)
NEPSAC: HVAL Final, 6 non-league games (7)
That's another 87 games tonight, almost all hold tons of importance!
This is the first major upset of the post season, but Iโm hesitant to even call it major; Grimes can play
Only 4 undefeated teams remain in the state of NY
Boys Final: No. 8 Bishop Grimes 49, No. 1 Whitesboro 48, the perfect season has come to an end for the Warriors. Huge upset for the Cobras showing it pays off to play a tough schedule, they advance to the semifinals.

Tonight in NY state, we've got 110 games, including
S6 NFL Championship
S3 Class B, C & D Opening Round
S10 Class B & C Semis
S4 DL & IAC Small Finals
S1 Class A & B Opening Round
S11 Class A Quarters
PSAL Borough Semis
NYSAIS ISAL, NYCAL & PSAA Finals
MYHSAL Prequarterfinal
Section VI has what could be the worst seeding formula in the state. Adopting what Section V, II, and III do, which is the exact same (yet non-league games matter) would make more sense, coupled with perhaps a bonus for playing a tougher schedule (like Section 1)
Just have

team is the state in class B is the 3rd ranked team in the section.. HS always miss seeded.. needs work
Find this to be a pretty wild stat...there are only 4 Section X Class C teams. The combined record of those 4 teams? 40-19, the worst of which has a .600 winning pct

Just your average morning here at Floyd Maines arena where a 54 game winning streak came to an end and an all time points total for a single game (206) has been set as the new high water mark
The main takeaway here is that league-only results really shouldn't drive the sectional seeding process entirely. Why would Bennett want to play in Yale Cup I as a B when they could play in Yale Cup II as a B under the current format? Their seed would have changed drastically
Time for some more predictions (first go around wasn't so great, so keep that in mind ๐คฃ):
Class AAA: Bay Shore over Niagara Falls, Green Tech over Kingston. Bay Shore over Green Tech
Class AA: West Genesee over Lourdes, Elmont over Jamestown. West Genesee over Elmont
Tomorrow's (3/9) matchups
Lyons v Pembroke (S5 C final)
Magen David v NJ-Frisch (MYHSAL semi)
PSAL A Quarters
Van Buren v Clinton
Lehman v Transit Tech
Westinghouse v Murry Bergtraum
PSAL B Quarters
Family Academy v Spring Creek
Medgar Evers v Bathgate
Goldstein v Fannie Lou
I still don't understand S2's seeding process. By handbook, the section utilizes the 5/-5, 6/-4, 7/-3 ratio process for wins & losses...yet then loosely follows that come seeding time? I would think either you follow it fully, or just do an old-school selection process w/o it
If youโre wondering (maybe youโre not wondering this at all) -we do maintain ranks at least 160 teams deep for both the large and small school poll. As of 1/14 results we are aware of, hereโs who just missed:
Large:
#101
Brooklyn Law & Tech (11-4)
Small:
#101
Prattsburgh (10-1)
Today's state-wide HS boys basketball schedule:
Queens Academy (2-9) vs Urban Dove I (2-10)
American Dream (2-9) vs Urban Dove II (9-2)
Challenge Charter (4-7) vs Lavelle Prep (0-10)
All CSAA games (2 North, 1 South)
I don't know what to do with all this free time now...
Visit our site when you get the chance to get a daily glimpse of up to date scores and standings across the State (updated daily next day mid-AM), but when it comes to Section 1โs Bracketology for playoff seeding & analytics galore, this work is second to none
Impressive by Park (12-4) considering they've now played on back to back to back to back days; leading off in Canada, followed by NYC, followed by Western New York. My legs are tired just thinking of this...
Section V enthusiasts out there - anybody know if Bloomfield should be part of C-1 or C-2? They're in two different spots on two different sites, as they straddle the line between the two from an enrollment perspective:
@PickinSplinters
@BC_SVTB
@SecVBBasketball
Lastly, here's the school totals and percentage smooth by region, should this ever be adopted. Just helps sometimes to see it truncated by region, these being the regions I'm defining by Class:

Expect another dose of updated rankings sometime around noon tomorrow after tonightโs results come in - a lot of movement coming as weโve seen a good deal of upsets early on this week state-wide
@KDJmedia1
@SVHStigers

The point is, why is this not standardized? Either you play at a predetermined neutral destination by X round or you donโt. The in-between of it and/or gray area is puzzling
It seems pretty wide open to me - for whatever reason, I think Irondequoit will be the last team standing (just a gut feeling). I think the Goshen/TZ winner should be the betting favorite. New Hartford has the easiest path to the final four though
I have to say, the teams I thought would cruise in the Class A NYS bracket have not impressed.
Donโt look now, but itโs looking like more and more to me that New Hartford has a legitimate chance to win it all. Amherst+South Side(8) will be the teams to watch. Can NH pull it off?
Below is a color scale of what I believe would 'smooth things out' from a regional % standpoint. In many cases just like today, certain sections would always be tied with one another, geographically speaking (5&6, 2&7, 1&9, 8&11)
S4 thread: This is our tournament seeding expectations. Hopefully it's dead on; we THINK we have all games accounted for. The one wildcard is how PA schools are classified, but we based those decisions off of the enrollment totals found on the PIAA website
Here we go -
Finally Class D:
It's a crime that Clymer wasn't given the 1 seed. And look who's 2 & 3...two teams that have been better than Ellicottville all season. No disrespect to the Eagles, but they lost to Panama 2x, Westfield once and Clymer 2x. They're
#1
because of a weak league
