The average vacancy rate at the Council is nearly 3x greater than the vacancy rate citywide. Years of poverty wages have made working at Council unsustainable. Without fair pay, the Council can't retain staff, and without staff, it can't serve the city. We demand living wages.

As CM Espinal moves on, 7 staffers are now left in precarious employment. When a CM decides to resign before the end of term, staff are unexpectedly left without jobs. NYC Council needs a clearer process and avenues for employee protection and transition.

The Council has a large surplus ($8.9M) and spends freely on executive salaries ($7.4M), but in contract negotiations is denying a living wage to 400 frontline staff which would cost much less ($3.7M). The Council can and MUST become a fair living wage employer.

We are outraged by the Brooklyn DA’s decision to drop charges against CM Vernikov. Using a gun to intimidate staffers and students adds fire to the flames of extremist political violence. We call on the Council to continue their investigation and to take action to protect staff.
