Pastor, The Woman before you is not a means to your end. She’s not here to be dominated, used, ignored. She is not a temptation to avoid but a person to respect. Woman bears God’s Image equally with Man. If Women aren’t honored fully in your congregation, then reform your Men.

My mother, an abuse survivor, is currently in the hospital with severe throat problems. My father held up the phone so she could hear me. I told her the SBC is now beginning to change. Through the pain, she said, “I am so glad. I am proud of you. We must change for good.” Tears

Does Scripture teach all women in general must submit to all men in general? No. Such a view is not merely morally errant but spiritually abhorrent. As an image-bearer, every woman (like every man) owes general submission only to God. All other relations occur only in covenant.

The greatest challenge facing American evangelicals today doesn’t come from lame media persecution, nor from worn out liberal theology, nor from some imagined conspiracy within. Our greatest challenge remains in our own hearts, in particular how WE value our FELLOW HUMAN BEINGS!

The “blast radius” of sexual abuse in the church, to borrow the language of @juleswoodson11 , is not for a day but multi-generational. The SBC must reform itself for the sake of God’s glory, for the sake of the little girls and boys and other victims, and for our integrity. End/

Five truths every Christian theologian must embrace: 1. God’s Word is perfect. 2. Our theologies are not. 3. The responsible theologian reads other theologians. 4. The discerning theologian both appreciates and disagrees. 5. The irresponsible theologian denigrates discernment.

Historically, the SBC’s real problem has only rarely been the denial of the Word of God. Instead, the real problem has almost always been the abuse of the Image of God. We really do respect our Bible, and rightly so. Where we struggle is in respecting our Brothers and Sisters.

Five recommendations for those establishing “Ministries”: 1. Don’t name it after yourself. No Christian ministry is about the minister. A name indicates a purpose. 2. Don’t stack your board of directors with your family and cronies. Enable the board to hold you accountable.

Causes of the Sexual Abuse Crisis the SBC faces: It is a crisis caused by our failure to identify wolves. It is a crisis caused by our neglect for the sheep. It is a crisis caused by errant theologies of authority. It is NOT a crisis caused by the reporting of sexual abuse.

Southern Baptists are in a very deep crisis over theological anthropology. Evidence of racism, misogyny, sexual abuse, and child abuse comes out every single day. The solution requires a biblical Christology and Christ-centered piety feeding personal and ecclesial discipleship.

Who said this? “We cannot say to the women, ‘Go home, there is nothing for you to do in the service of the Lord.’”

My daughter just returned from an international mission trip. And what does she do? Craft a letter to thank me for guiding her, saying she was proud of me for fighting for the gospel and for doing what is right within the SBC. That nearly broke me. Let’s get it right for them.

If sanctification is progressive, shouldn’t Christians grow kinder, more relentlessly gracious, more lavishly loving as we age? I so desperately want to do this well and bless, encourage, and grace others rather than rant and rage.

@RobertDownen_ @TexasTribune I once heard David Barton “preach” during a Sunday morning church service. It was striking, not only for its obvious misreading of American political history, but in its total avoidance of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

The greatest need of Southern Baptists is not leaders, as important as they are. The greatest need we have is to become entirely broken before God for our wayward hearts, our misplaced priorities. Pray for the Holy Spirit to put Christ’s Cross and God’s glory before our eyes.

When @KenHemphill found out that I was taking the place of @BethMooreLPM on the SBC panel on the Indispensability of Women as Partners in God’s Mission, he laughed heartily, then prayed for me. I so appreciated him for both the laughter and the prayer. Beth Moore is a blessing.

As a scholar who has researched and written quite a bit about the Anabaptists, can we set a few things straight? 1. Baptists are not Anabaptists. Their history is theirs; ours is ours. We have similarities, but we are not them. We honor them by not using them for our purposes.

For two days, I watched and prayed for my dear colleagues at @SEBTS . The courage for truth, the passion for evangelism, and the sweetness of spirit demonstrated by @DannyAkin , @kswhitfield , and @KSPrior under extreme pressure has been so encouraging. May God bless you greatly!

ON PLAGIARISM AND COLLABORATION Decades ago, a prominent conservative took one of my essays, summarized it, and presented its concepts as his own. It hurt my pride. Then I thought, “Theologian, you are not in this for your glory, but Christ’s. Teach theology for replication.”
