After years of being too chicken, I’ve decided to launch my own education website. It will contain notes for English, history and SEN and I hope it will be useful for students and teachers alike. It’ll be ready very soon 💕

Leaving Cert students are under incredible pressure at the moment, after just submitting project work and now having to complete oral exams when they should be taking some time off and studying for the marathon written exams in June. It’s madness that this has been allowed.
Inspired by the SEN Padlets I’ve seen here and on my course, I put together one that is as comprehensive as I could currently manage. It’s a great way to communicate SEN issues to all staff, pupils and parents.

I have finally launched! I have included mostly LC notes, but there is some JC notes, a smidge of history (more soon), the SEN Padlet, and lots and lots of slideshows and webinars, with some resources thrown in too. Phew 😅

The Junior Cycle is just not working. There are too many CBAs which place a disproportionate amount of stress on students and teachers. The assessment tasks are wholly unnecessary. The exams are terribly structured and seem thrown together with zero links to the outcomes.
Wouldn’t it be great if the Gov cared enough about Ireland’s students & educators to say “we did make a mess of the Junior Cycle reform & are open to input from teachers on the ground before we begin to make improvements to what was a huge failure”?One can dream.

Link to Drive folder for The Comparative. There is a sample essay for CC, a detailed outline for Theme &GVVP, all modes explained with glossaries, general PowerPoints and anticipation exercises. Worksheets also! And my webinar is there too. Hope it helps.
Having anxiety means that you are constantly overthinking. Then you overthink why you overthink. Then you’re just exhausted and terrified a lot of the time. Being on your own is necessary to deal with it all. I get Iain.

I want to give my English corrections the best possible experience before I return them so far they have travelled in the back of my car to the hairdressers, a restaurant, back to school and my mam’s house.
One of my Leaving Certs sent me an email today to let me know that both English papers went well and to thank me for my efforts and it was such a small little gesture that meant the world.

The responses of men throughout this entire thread are so telling. There will continue to be victims of assault, abuse, rape, murder while men continue to petulantly defend each other’s behaviour and blame/hate women for so little.
I have a MindMap, full set of notes and an essay plan for Elizabeth Bishop that I can link here later for anyone who would like them. Just don’t want to be bombarding the timelines over midterm 😵💫👩🏫
Reminder that my lovely Portuguese partner forgot the English for “goosebumps” so called them “chicken pops”. He does speak four languages, to be fair 🥰🥰🥰😂
As promised, my lesson on ‘All Too Well’ by Taylor Swift, suitable for JC and TY. Included a Slideshow with analysis and commentary as well as tasks, lyric video and short film, and Google doc with lyrics and summary analysis.
I put together this study guide for JC English students, with exercises in poetry, fiction, drama and film. Students can complete it in class or at home. It is intended to add some structure to their revision, as I feel they often find that difficult!
If there is ONE thing I wish successive Ministers for Education would realise is that ordering dramatic amendments to State Examinations in the name of creating some kind of ministerial(& personal)legacy&in spite of legitimate professional objections is just fundamentally selfish
Here is a link to a booklet I created to study the poetry of Emily Dickinson complete with a biography, overview, six poems with quotes underlined, a word cloud and a sample answer
It’s here 🎉 🎉🎉I would hugely appreciate if you could share, retweet, and subscribe using the function on the site. There’s more to add but hopefully enough for now
I just want to say that
@Kathbum
is my favourite comedian and nobody probably gives a shit except Katherine Ryan and maybe my mom but for different reasons.
I am actually a little taken aback at how offended people have gotten at this 🙃 Is it not fair to point out that the excessive coverage of her at a funeral is bizarre and surpassing ridiculous at this stage? She literally looked nice. Am I missing something?!
I’ve been dealing with a lot in my personal life and obviously I’m pretty weak right now. My tweet wasn’t intended to be the catalyst to a series of arguments with ppl. I mean you guys knock yourselves out, I’m gonna sleep.
The narrative around Dr Dre getting served at his grandmother’s funeral is bizarre. Are we supposed to feel sorry for a repeated and admitted abuser?! Where’s the empathy for Dee Barnes, Michel’le, Lisa Johnson (who has a restraining order), Tairrie B and Nicole Young?
I’ve gotten a lot of requests for sample answers so I just wanted to update those of you who have asked- I’m going to put together a Google Drive folder with some resources and share the link here when it’s done 😊
The gov see teachers as contrarian and objectionable when it comes to implementing policy change. We have no problem with change when it is reasoned, evidence-based, discursive and in the best interests of our students. We are the ones on the ground actually DOING.
Here is a quick visual of a mind-map I made using MindMeister. It’s interactive (links to click) but I also want students to synthesise some knowledge themselves. Although I’ve modelled some quotes & 4 poems (narrative, language, imagery), I ask them to do the rest themselves 👩🏫
Thanks for all the kindness, strangers. It’s nice and kinda unusual on here so I appreciate it. I’ve been following public health guidance here in Ireland although I can see that it’s obviously not enough. I work in a very busy school. I have a pretty weak immune system.
The output expected of the students in 2 hours is absolutely insane. The questions read like they’ve been picked out of a hat. And don’t get me started on how inaccessible the exams are for our students with additional needs. The whole thing is a complete mess.
This is an English activity that can work in TY or Senior Cycle for Paper 1 and it aims to
📚engage reluctant readers
🧠test comprehension skills
🧐improve critical thinking
🎭act as a springboard for creative exercises
A thread ⬇️🧵 📚👩🏫
I’ve added some Single Text notes to my website, including a list of King Lear’s most important quotes, notes on justice in Lear, and an overview of Iago from Othello (not very relevant 😂)

I’m not a maths teacher but I frequently tell my students that if they put the work in, they will be okay on the day. That now seems like a complete fallacy and it’s going to be a lot harder to reassure them and build confidence when exams like Maths Paper 1 are thrown at them.
1/ I think it’s so important to acknowledge teacher burnout and the impact this job can have on one’s mental health. We spend so much of our time supporting and advocating for our students that we often neglect our own and each other’s wellbeing. We strive to appear competent
I have been using MindMeister with my students to plan & colour code our comparative, starting with Cultural Context. ‘Room’ is yellow & the three subheadings are pink, green and blue. So all discussion of values in all 3 texts will be blue. It’s a simple yet effective strategy.
Happy birthday to my wonderful colleague and friend
@Aoifecork67
who has been the most astounding mentor and support since I have known her. Besides being an incredible teacher, she has me in stitches every single day 💜
We can’t underestimated how much this cohort has endured over the last few years in terms of their learning being interrupted, their mental health suffering and any trace of routine going out the window. Please don’t be hard on yourselves. You’ve done a blinder.
