Another idea for childcare provision which we enjoyed yesterday. This worked better as a guided task, as some children struggled with the concept of scale. Kept us busy none the less, and kids enjoyed it... especially the final outcome.

One way to increase teacher/doctor/nurse/ etc. pay (thus retention & recruitment)? Suspend student loan repayments of professionals who stay in education/healthcare - these repayments could restart if they move out of the sector. This would increase pay by £100s/month. 1/3

I had a lovely message from the parents of a child in my class this week, which reduced me to tears. It’s a candid video of their child who was singing about me as their parents cleaned, and they took the time and energy to video it and get it to me. 🥲 1/5

So I’ve been rubbish at looking after myself recently - often forgetting my lunch and skipping it because I’m too busy. Yesterday one of the cleaners told me off, and today she’s sorted me out with lunch for the next two days. 😭😭😭 Absolutely made my day. What a ⭐️!! #kindness

Went for an AHT interview. Didn’t get it. It sucks. Of course it does, I put myself out there & someone said ‘No thanks!’ BUT this feeling is temporary & each stumble is a lesson on the way to success. Keep at it if this is you. We’ll get there in the end. When the time is right.

At the beginning of September I was closer to 16 stone than I was 15. I’ve worked so hard over the last couple of months and, as of today, I weigh 13 stone 9 pounds. A few more pounds and I’ll have lost 2 stone. 🙈 I’m in such a good place right now. Happy Friday everyone! 🙌🏻

When modelling writing I go through a really clear structure each time: 1. Introduce ambitious vocabulary 2. Read and discuss WAGOLL 3. Shared write 4. Independent writing Here’s what the slides look like. One of the more bizarre model texts I’ve written, I won’t lie! 🙈💩😂

After speaking with Macmillan, I discovered it is perfectly legal for me to travel home to offer respite care for my grandma, who is terminally ill. So I left @Jmosley_history & our furry/feathered family at home for the weekend, & got to spend it caring for this wonderful woman.

I often see pleas for ideas for early morning activities in Y1, and my response is always the same… let them play. I work in a relatively formal Y1 setting, which I believe is appropriate for the needs of our children, BUT they are still 5 and 6 years old. They need play. 1/4

Test results back. Hugo is at the end of his life. 💔 For now we keep him comfortable, spoil him, and wait for him to tell us when he’s ready to go. I don’t think it’s sunk in yet. We are, obviously, gutted but so thankful we have a little more time with our precious boy.

In school for the last day to sort out my last few bits and bobs which will make for a stress free start! Not for everyone, but I certainly prefer to be in so I can ‘set the tone’ for starting back - both for me (being well prepared) and the children (who see the effort put in).

My mum. 🥰 She’s been alone a lot (as dad is a key worker still working full time) so she’s spent hours on her machine every day making wash bags and headbands for NHS workers. ❤️ She’s made over 200 items so far and keeps going! We’ve sent her some fabric to keep at it! 💪🏻

Made a big decision this week. I stepped down as Year Lead to gain greater experience of KS1 & EYFS. I could feel myself being drawn into SLT sooner than I wanted, without getting the chance to teach in some of the most critical & formative years of a child’s education. 1/3

I voted yes, a decision I did not make lightly, and here’s why. After a decade of wage stagnation and real terms pay cuts, the recent pay rises were much needed but NOT fully funded. This means the increases eat into vital funds needed to ensure a good quality of education. 1/7

This just makes my heart hurt. I’ve kept carpet time right up to Year 4 and, if I’d had the space, I would have kept it higher up too. What’s betting this head doesn’t have Early Years or KS1 experience? 🤷🏼‍♂️

Just checked my work inbox and the last email sent was on the 17th December. It makes such a difference to be able to truly switch off (should you choose to). I urge all school leaders to ban emails being sent outside of office hours or during the holidays. 🙏🏻

Was in B&Q today buying (v. expensive) paint. We were at the checkout when a woman said ‘Excuse me, I think you teach my daughter.’ I do indeed teach her daughter - we chatted briefly and then she offered us her discount, saving us 20%. Made my day. Such a lovely thing to do. 🥰

Does anyone else go into complete overdrive when they have a guest staying over!? I think I’ve lost the plot! Cleaning the oven at 6am, going out and buying new house plants, bath mats and door mats, getting all my washing done (why??), ironing bed sheets, the list goes on... 🤪

World, meet the newest addition to our family. Today felt like the right day to welcome a Welsh Pembrokeshire Corgi into our lives and, of course, we called her Lilibet. 🥰 Those ears though! 😍 @Jmosley_history

We’ve moved to booklets to save on costs, as most of our Science was stuck in anyway - think of the saving on exercise books and glue! 🙌🏻 Anyway, I’m super pleased with them. 🥰 1/2

When parents complain about the clocks changing, all I can think is: “I wish we had that problem.” I know parenting can be tough, and I try my best to be understanding, but it still takes its toll emotionally.

Why am I tweeting this? I guess because I want people to understand the grief gay men can feel. To understand the emptiness the prospect of childlessness can bring. And I don’t want people to underestimate the longing we can feel for children to be a part of our lives. 💔

I have never received a gift at the end of a half term before, but this note on some chocolates today was the cherry on top of a truly wonderful start to a new school. I can’t overstate the impact a few kind words can have. I love Year 1, I love my school and I love my job. 🥰

When teachers strike on the 1st what will children ‘miss’ if there is nothing being taught that day? 🤷🏼‍♂️ We’ll just have to work even harder to squeeze (an already overpacked curriculum) in to the sessions we have available - much as we did for the jubilee & the Queen’s funeral.

I know I’ve said that my grandma showed her love in many ways but even in death she shows me. This time my mum found this in her drawers. 😢 Sent 03.08.94, she kept it for 27 years. My mum thinks I just wanted to send a letter. It’s not a surprise I chose to write it to her. ❤️

Never understand people who are SO against crate training. It’s Lilibet’s safe space - even when it’s open she uses it. Besides, how else do you stop puppies chewing while you’re out for ANY length of time? She can be destructive when I’m *in* the house never mind when I’m out!

Honestly, I’m so done with this. No extra measures have been put in place to protect the workforce in primary settings? Do we not matter? I have cried tears today over this for the first time, granted other things have been happening too, but really... business as normal? 💔

Can’t remember who I was talking to about this, or where, but this is what I wear in the classroom to save my shoes getting ruined (I’ve scuffed the toes of countless shoes from kneeling next to children to offer feedback). Kids and parents think I’m mad. 🤪

It’s late. I should be sleeping. Instead, I’m thinking about her. About life and how short it is, even when you’re lucky to get 8 decades of it. About how the harder you love someone, the harder the heartache when you lose them. That’s the price of love and I’d do it all again.
