Inspired to follow his racing dream by Ayrton Senna, Gil de Ferran went on to win the Indy 500 and the CART championship twice.

Mario Andretti's championship-winning Lotus 79 chassis No4 – widely regarded as one of the greatest F1 cars of all time – will be put up for auction by Bonhams later this year.
Mario tells us his incredible racing story in our 2007 archive piece:
We are devastated to report the passing of our colleague Simon Arron.
Much respected and loved by readers, racers, fellow journalists and photographers, his loss will be felt by the racing world.
Our condolences go out to his family,

Thirty years after the death of Ayrton, David Tremayne recounts the dark events of the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix and explains why the Brazilian’s legendary status will live on:

Nigel Mansell brilliantly won the Williams-Honda FW11's first GP OTD at Spa in 1986.
It was the early days of a winning relationship – Patrick Head recalls the glory years and eventual split in today's Great Read:
Mr Monaco himself, Graham Hill, took a then-record fifth win at the 1969 Monaco GP OTD.
As Paul Fearnley writes, Graham Hill loved Monaco, and Monaco loved Graham Hill. He examines an iconic driver/circuit relationship:
Remembering the fearless Niki Lauda, who died OTD in 2019.
In 1972 his March team was struggling with its ambitious 721X, and Lauda was no fan. Enter the 721G, based on an F2 monocoque, built in just nine days and the car that saved his F1 career:
"When sports insist their presence can be a force for good, they need to back it up."
After previously allowing drivers to make personal protests, the FIA has followed FIFA in banning such statements – this is a grave error, says

Patrick Tambay has sadly passed away at the age of 73.

Legendary Ferrari engineer Mauro Forghieri has passed away.

Motor Sport sends its sincere condolences to his family and friends.
The six-wheeler Tyrrell P34 F1 car won its only GP on this day in 1976.
Not only one of F1's most radical innovations, it also still sharply divides opinion.
Today's Great Read asks if the P34 was a technical leap or a blind alley:
A very happy birthday to Le Mans legend Richard Attwood who, along with Hans Hermann, became Porsche's first Le Sarthe winner in 1970.
In today's Great Read, Attwood lets Andrew Frankel take a legendary machine for a spin: the Porsche 917.

'Il Leone' endeared himself to the tifosi OTD by taking Gerhard Berger on the outside of Peraltada on the final lap of Mexico '90.
Mark Hughes examines the enigma that is Nigel Mansell:
Lewis Hamilton is F1's most successful driver on the track and continues to work in support of various environmental and social causes off it. So why is he such a divisive figure?
A very happy birthday to Arturo Merzario – a man with style, clearly.
The last man to score points on debut for Ferrari *before* Ollie Bearman spoke to Rob Widdows in 2021:
Remembering the brilliant Bruce McLaren, killed on this day in 1970.

Mario Andretti won on debut for the legendary Lotus 79 ground effect at the 1978 Belgian GP OTD.
A chance to drive the revolutionary ground-effect 79 was made even more nerve-wracking by the wintry conditions at Hethel, as Andrew Frankel found:
