Last year this time I wrote why Yemen cannot achieve all three at the same time: Peace, Economic Opportunity and State Legitimacy. I argued that the Yemen paradox means achieving only two out of the three, hence a trilemma.
So I wake up to see myself in a meme 😂
I must say the replies were very inspirational. I did win my fight for Jollof. Overall, My Agbada and Shaku Shaku moves qualified me to live my Yoruba Demon dream.
Self-reflection: my two years time in Nigeria.
When I was first told about the opportunity to reallocate from Germany to Nigeria, I was very excited. By then I already finished my masters in African business relations, where 🇳🇬 was a major interest given its strategic role.
I spent the week sailing with friends in Croatia. Besides having had a good time, I am also very happy that I am starting my new job in for a VC firm in Germany. This comes with the sad news that I’ll be officially moving out of Nigeria for now. I am humbled, proud and thankful!
It’s been exactly one year since I left Nigeria. It was therefore very refreshing and humbling talking and spending time with such high caliber figures in Berlin.

The total number of registered companies in Nigeria is 2,794,860. If every company hires 10 people all of Nigeria is employed. Here is the catch: the problem never been about jobs; but rather about productive jobs.
Moderna has officially stated it has no vaccine supplies for Africa in 2021. Where as AstraZeneca told the African Union to "speak to India's Serum Institute maybe you can negotiate something"
🔸Nigeria is a tough country o! It has poor infrastructure, largely lawless, & has omnipresent poverty.
🔸by the same token, Nigerians showed me what resilience, hope and determination is.
🔸The important role of private sector and communities in creating opportunities.

So much I have learned and earned in self-development during my time in Lagos and I would love to give back. In my new job in Germany, i will continue to vouch and promote for African entrepreneurs and do my best to source support for the ecosystem.
Had the utmost pleasure to meet up with
@EfosaOjomo
in Lagos and had him sign me a copy of his book. The book really changed my world-view on how I used to see development.
Major key learnings:
🔸Unlike the rest of expats, I had less of a culture shock moving to Nigeria, than to Germany previously. (Fun fact: I always felt nostalgic during power cuts as it reminded me of my home country Yemen lol)
Having worked in Nigeria -and in management consulting- for an year now, my motto and key learning has been always TRUST! No matter how bad or good business models were and in spite of my fear being sometimes played out, I had to completely adhere to the rules of the game.
I’m excited to make a career shift from consulting to an investment startup focused on investing in startups in developing countries using the blockchain technology. I’ll act as a scout (market and startup analyst) aiming at developing vehicles to facilitate finance ease.
🔸people matter. It matters to understand markets, ecosystems, governance and systems.
🔸narratives are key to drive hope, restore social cohesion and encourage entrepreneurship.
🔸structural change is both bottom-up and top-down.
Spent my bday today attending a number of meetings with my client and renowned potential partners when introducing automated solutions for Nigeria's industries. I learned a great deal from both the culture and technical aspect of the business. New knowledge is rewarding.
Hi, currently working on program to facilitate strategic partnerships for African tech-enabled companies with european companies. If this is interesting for your company please reach out. We have the resources and I would like to help.
The decade of leap: Left home (war-torn Yemen) by 21➡️spent 2 years as dish washer➡️joined leading business School (Masters degree+Student of the year) ➡️Strategy Consulting(Team lead Nigeria)➡️Impact investment Africa focused VC
Just ran into Mo Gawdat at the airport security check! I told him how his book helped me cope moving to Lagos from Frankfurt by striving to match expectations with reality. One of the most content people!
I spent the past two years sourcing and originating foreign investments in automotive manufacturing to Nigeria. My efforts were largely thwarted, by various stakeholders, and so it did not happen so far. I spent two weeks in Ghana and we have something concrete.
The world should remember how young Nigerians operated a more effective alternative system powered by technology & engineered by women all without political ambition! Respect!!!

I will be speaking tomorrow at the Lagos Startup Week on the startup ecosystem. I’ll present some findings on the challenges the ecosystem faces and the new financing structures available in the market.
Things got interesting after I decided to share a flat with Nigerians young professionals (whom I didn’t know before) to immerse myself a bit and understand culture and life style. Thanks to
@fibrehomes
In two years I’ve built myself a network with solid access points. I’ve conducted more than 20 market research projects, facilitated the entry of 7 companies and a JV. I have built team of two analysts - which are now in leading positions.
I stopped by
@gossyomega
today to say hi. He received his Prosperity Paradox copies. I took it out my copy from my bag to brag (knowing that I was introduced to
@EfosaOjomo
via him). We discussed the future of education, innovation, Nigeria, and Yemen.
P.S: he tired to smile!
Meet
@Moalsalafi
from
#Yemen
who is pushing for change from abroad, poised to motivate the Yemeni youth. I met him in
#Nigeria
. He is one of thousands of the Yemeni diaspora. This is his story: 👇🏾
I respect myself very much in Nigeria, even when I know that the system is broken and powerful elites can be very malicious. Playing the blame game is not noble if you want to be an outsider hero. Instead have some skin in the game.
The sincere story behind how Paga and Apposit met is why I believe in founders communities. If not university mates, team buildings and boot camps should contribute to strengthening positive-sum games across industries & borders for founders.
@gossyomega
started something similar
Before I left Nigeria, I got myself this art piece of Balogun market from a local artist in Jakande. It’s finally hung up on my living room. And I really like it! It has those hustle feels and exerts energy. A reminder of human ingenuity even in the toughest places and times.
In Nigeria most simple conversations intensify into discussions and arguments (not necessarily opposing) which end up blaming the government in despair. Reminds me a lot of Yemen. People in fragile societies know only one stakeholder. And they expect it to solve everything.
@pyjama_ceo
Movie is about envy. But with layers to it, such as power dynamics and gender roles both personally and professionally. Using investment banking as a stage is brilliant, making 10x more intense. The bottom of it to me was how ego can take over you and self-distruct along the way
First day at my new job, first startup meeting was with
@IBBabalola
. Haha small world! Just last week he celebrated my leave from Lagos😂. Anyhow, side note: very excited about the future of
@musterngr
When Bill Gates was asked on the solution for climate change, he said “innovating across the sectors of emissions”. He did not say, policy making, carbon taxes, governance, energy efficiency...etc. something to ponder
