Of historical falsehoods and silences:
1. ED was not a member of the Crocodile Gang.
2. Silence on the 1980’s Gukurahundi.
3. Silence on the DRC War.
4. Silence on the death of Solomon Mujuru.
5. The 2017 military coup is referred to as a “military assisted transition”.
ED says "43 or 44" yrs ago he was released to Zambia. Thats 1976 or 77. ZANU ceased operating from Zambia in 1975, after Chitepo's death. How is it possible that ZANU received him in Zambia? Tongogara was in Zambian jails from 1975-6. How did he send Peter Baya to receive ED?
1/2. Today, 15 August, marks the 10th anniversary of the death of Solomon Mujuru/Rex Nhongo. Sudden deaths can change the course of political history; some more than others.…
Despite all the joy and the hope following Mugabe’s overthrow, in the aftermath of this election, Zimbabweans’ democratic dreams appear as distant as ever. | Blessing-Miles Tendi
Women weeping today during ED’s announcement that Auxillia Mnangagwa will not seek re-election as local MP in July in order to concentrate on her duties as First Lady. Auxillia also begins to weep, at some point. Not even the dynamite Grace Mugabe pulled off a stunt like this one
7 yrs ago today (14 August) at 20:20 General Solomon Mujuru entered his Beatrice farmhouse, ostensibly to retire to bed. At about 03:00 on 15 August, mostly skeletal remains were discovered on the floor of a small living room. The remains were later identified as General Mujuru’s
War vets are calling another inclusive march yet Zanu made clear recent events are about internal party politics. I hope those who intend to march will pull the rug from under the army’s feet by saying: “We also want these reforms NOW or we stay in the streets”

@DrObertMpofu
, in his “On The Shoulders of Struggle: Memoirs of a Political Insider”, observes that General Solomon Mujuru was “unyielding in his commitment to ensuring that Mnangagwa never ascends to the presidency of ZANU PF and Government”.
The University of Oxford’s Department of Politics and International Relations has made a statement regarding the Cecil Rhodes statue: …
@Politics_Oxford
Former Mines Minister, Obert Mpofu, refuses to cooperate with Parliamentary Committee on Mines & Energy. Zimbabweans deserve straight answers on the opaque, corrupt goings on in the Mines ministry but if today’s events are anything to go by, straight answers will never come.
2/2 But as serious as Mutodi’s shortcomings are (the misogyny especially) he should not be the first one fired this week. All those responsible for the violent, heinous, acts against women in Harare & Bulawayo recently should have been sacked (and prosecuted) first, Mutodi second
An opportunity was lost today. Marchers ought to have pulled the rug from under the army’s feet by articulating broader agendas: Security Sector Reform; independent electoral commission; nature of government they want between now & 2018 poll. Zim’s problems are bigger than Mugabe
1/7. Yesterday
@DMwonzora
wrongly referred to Gukurahundi as civil war. Today he backtracks & decides to play politics by calling it genocide. Our politicians don’t understand the history of the 80s & when they are caught out, they choose to politicise the history of that decade.

@HeraldZimbabwe
article about Cde Chehondo underlines the enduring validity of the maxim, ‘journalism is the first rough draft of history’. It also reflects the power of social media influencers, posturing as patriotic amateur historians, to misinform followers.
@rangamataire
Just as Robert Mugabe was once demonized and the entire Zimbabwe crisis was laid at his doorstep, we are now witnessing the demonization of Vice President Constantino Chiwenga & the narrow personalization of Zimbabwe’s post-election political difficulties.
3/10 But I disagree with
@DrObertMpofu
that ED came to power via the “will of the people". Mnangagwa came to power via the will of the gun. Operation Restore Legacy was a coup that shared comparable justifications & operational attributes with military coups in Africa since 1956.
Peter Baya wasn't a ZANLA High Command member when ED was released to Zambia, as ED claims in the clip. At the time the High Command had 9 members: Tongogara, Sheba Gava, Robson Manyika, Rex Nhongo, Meyor Urimbo, Joseph Chimurenga, Justin Chauke, William Ndangana & Cletus Chigowe
7b. “It is a mistake for anybody to believe that the Shona have organised against the Ndebele. This is not so.... it (5th Brigade) is a political party army" - Joshua Nkomo
10/10 Solomon Mujuru backed his wife for the job after the Sekeramayi bid failed. Mujuru, opportunistically, rode a feminist wave in ZANU PF for a woman vice president so as to block Emmerson Mnangagwa from ever securing the vice presidency. Male dominated power politics at play!
Mnangagwa’s path to power is strewn with dead bodies, broken bones & souls. Yet a “free & fair” 2018 poll is uppermost for some while for others its all about economic stabilisation. Zim’s problems are multifaceted. Simplistic focus on the economy & elections won’t fix everything
6/10 (ii) One of the things Solomon Mujuru criticised Mugabe for was his hard heartedness, which he felt had been bad for Zimbabwe. Mujuru saw comparable hard heartedness in Mnangagwa and was of the view that Zimbabwe needed a break from a cycle of callous political leadership.
RIP Major General Paradzayi Willings Zimondi (Tonderai Nyika). One of the last times we met you said: “now that you have finished General (Solomon) Mujuru’s book, you must help me write mine”. We started but will now never finish. I will miss your war stories, humour & warmth.
The deep state (military) that engineered this change of leadership will remain, thwarting any real democratic reform. I expect only comestic democratic reform that will not threaten ZANU's hold on power. Mnangagwa is also into neoliberal big business, which is not my cup of tea.
The dying moments of Mugabe's Presidency.
The aspiration of the Zimbabwean people is that we'll set the nation on a track of economic and democratic reform that'll make him see why we wanted him & his wife to go.
Complicated yet doable.
We choose hope.
5 Brigade had 3 commanders in its life. Perrance Shiri was the first. Second and longest serving was Emile Munemo. Third was Edzai Chimonyo. The 5 Brigade commander at Bhalagwe was Chimonyo. Minister of State Security in the Prime Minister’s office took charge of Gukurahundi.
Perrence Shiri ‘Bigboy Samson Chikerema’ aka The Butcher of Bhalagwe aka Black Jesus, the Former commander of the 5th Brigade, the man who was in charge of The Gukurahundi Genocide has died..

5/10 (i) Mnangagwa never saw active combat as a ZANLA guerrilla & his role in larger nationalist politics was marginal. For Solomon Mujuru, Mnangagwa’s meagre liberation struggle credentials disqualified him from seeking to determine the direction of ZANU’s succession politics.
Mujuru sought to professionalise Zimbabwe’s army in the 1980s; later, as an MP, he stood against partisanship. Today’s army officers and politicians should follow his lead: via @
@mailandguardian
9/10 On Solomon Mujuru’s reverence for education: when the ZANU vice presidency became vacant in 2004, he opposed his wife Joice’s candidature. He believed Sydney Sekeramayi was more accomplished.
@DrObertMpofu
8/10 (iv) Mujuru had an injudicious belief the highly educated & bright make the best leaders. This conviction partly explains his misguided support for Mugabe in the 1970s. Mujuru believed there were better educated, brighter, ZANU politicians than ED who could become president.
10 Events are complex.
@HeraldZimbabwe
article lacks context to contain complexity & it doesn't corroborate accounts. Folks also need to be more critical of influencers posing as patriotic amateur historians - reasonable people are giddy about a faulty account devoid of context!
Tonight I will talk about the alarming levels of corruption sadly within my own Ministry. 😞 I have no idea how we allowed it to get this far. Might not have a job after this but the people deserve to know how their country is being run! See u on FBlive 9PM
An African liberation fighter and until his ‘death by fire’ in 2011 a key figure in Zimbabwe’s ruling ZANU PF, this biography of Solomon Mujuru throws much needed light onto the opaque elite politics of the 1970s liberation war, independence army & ZANU PF
7/10 (iii) Solomon Mujuru and Emmerson Mnangagwa clashed over some business interests in the 1990s, most famously in the ZIMASCO affair. These differences over business resulted in very bad blood between them.
@DrObertMpofu
2/10
@DrObertMpofu
observation fits my Mujuru biography’s account of the General's stance towards the prospect of a Mnangagwa presidency. As I write about, Mujuru remarked: “Mnangagwa will become president of Zimbabwe over my dead body”.
I attach evidence of contestations for the control of Zanu PF btwn Civilians & the Military - Joint Operations Command Minutes on 2013 Parliamentary Candidates , this is well before the advent of G40 as you know it ! Read carefully
Yoweri Museveni on Robert Mugabe’s “philosophical mistakes”, i.e. Mugabe did not understand the role of the private sector and should not have ejected white farmers.
David Moore’s new book does precisely what feminist scholars have critiqued for decades now. It is laden with unquestioned patriarchal notions and gendered trivialisations that impoverish the study of politics: via
@TC_Africa
KGVI is symbol of the independence army Nhongo built. To rename it after Tongo who never contributed to the independence army is to downplay Nhongo’s contribution. Nhongo has become a mortal foe (“sellout”) to Mugabe & his leadership successors in ZANU

@DrObertMpofu
shies away from stating why Solomon Mujuru was determined to prevent an Emmerson Mnangagwa presidency. Mujuru had four reasons for opposing Mnangagwa's bid to become president of Zimbabwe. Here goes....
When ED said "anenge arota zvakaita Zambia zvayambuka kuuya kuno, muka ubike doro", I found myself agreeing with him. It is, partly, muddled stances such as this one by Jameson Timba that make me agree with ED that Zanu will triumph in 2023.
The unintelligent rant by DCS Charamba following similar stupid remarks by Chinamasa about the ZNA are a manifestation of their fear for MDCA & the people. Fortunately Generals Sibanda & Chimonyo said the army will uphold the constitution. Stop tarnishing our army

France condemns the coup in Mali and threatens to apply EU sanctions. A month ago France defended the coup in Chad, citing the need for Chadian 'stability'. A tale of coups, double standards and France just being France in its 'back garden'.....
7/7. Politicians need to stop politicising the dark history of the 1980s & also do some serious reading about it. Alexander & McGregor’s book ‘Violence & Memory’ & the CCJPZ report are good places to start.
@DMwonzora
3/3. "Read General Chiwenga's statement and Sibusiso Moyo's statement saying the president is safe.... those two are what signalled to me what was at stake. It was a contest for power in ZANU PF that had nothing to with the people".

9/10 Its odd that
@HeraldZimbabwe
makes great play of Cde Chehondo’s cameo because the real star in the course of Nhongo’s address was Cde Chinx, crooning ‘Maruza Imi’. Cde Chinx was the real highlight of that pre independence election address.
@RangaMberi
Agreed, Zim would’ve been different had Tongogara lived to be an actor in independent Zim. But that difference does not necessarily mean a better Zim. A man’s history in relation to power is a useful guide to future conduct. Tongo was a dictatorial militarist. (Alarm Bell Rings!)
SAHJ invited historians whose research has focused on various aspects of Mugabe’s life to reflect on his legacy. The historians’ contributions touch on a wide range of topics & themes informed by the many controversies in which Mugabe was a central player:
How Cuban art fed Africa's liberation struggles: An exhibition of Cuban propaganda posters and magazines in London shows the support Fidel Castro gave to African liberation movements during the Cold War.
“The junta has no legitimacy, no moral or legal authority to exercise executive power” - you should have said that the day the “junta” put Mugabe under house arrest. Hamuna! You even attended the misguided solidarity rally & sent Tsvangirai to the inauguration. Maruza imi!
The reconsolidation of the military -State conflation is a betrayal of 18 November. The open flaunting of a securocratic junta construct is the greatest threat to this country s existence.The junta has no legitimacy, no moral or legal authority to exercise executive power .

4/7. Gukurahundi was acts committed with intent to destroy a political group (ZAPU) & its supporters. Calling Gukurahundi genocide is technically incorrect. It was a crime against humanity and calling it that DOES NOT, in any way, diminish the gravity of the crime
@DMwonzora
Despite eulogies by Cyril Ramaphosa and Thabo Mbeki after his death, the historical records show Mugabe and ZANU PF collaborated with the old apartheid government to keep the ANC’s military wing Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) out of Zimbabwe.
Critical documentary on systematic rape during 1980s Gukurahundi. "I want my virginity back" is a statement by victims themselves. Its representative of their plea for recognition, healing & rehabilitation, so they can be anew, free of rape trauma.
@zenzele
Today ED officiated at a ceremony renaming 3 Brigade HQ as Herbert Chitepo Barracks. All ED said about Chitepo's end is: “Chitepo died on 18 March 1975". Full stop! Well Chitepo was in fact assassinated & his end changed ZANU history’s course. History is too inconvenient for ED!
Statement released by President Mnangagwa on Morgan Tsvangirai:
* Pays tribute for his role in fighting for free elections and democracy
* Mnangagwa to call meeting with all parties
* Consulting family on "befitting honour" for Tsvangirai
6/7. Until there is truth telling by perpetrators & declassifying of state intelligence reports from the period, we cannot be certain of the number of civilians that were killed. Politicians stoke divisions when they carelessly throw fatality figures around

Singapore model cannot be replicated in Zim. Singapore & Zim markedly different: ED not visionary principled leader like Yew; Yew had highly technocratic government but ED made political appointments last week; Singapore is a city-state & geopolitics different to that facing Zim
2. Farewell, Colonel Lionel “Katsande” Dyck: “Dyck would come to brief Mugabe on ZNA ops against RENAMO in Mozambique. I used to cringe becoz he would give very descriptive briefings about precisely how they killed RENAMO & left intestines hanging in trees" - Dan Stannard, 2016.
1. Farewell, Colonel Lionel “Katsande” Dyck:
“There are no hard commanders left in ZNA, just corrupt, political little shits. Soft as cooked peas. Its becoz Bob the Gob [Mugabe] sent ZNA into the Democratic Republic of Congo. It eroded ZNA. I weep when I see it now”- Dyck, 2023.
The detention of Mali’s civilian leadership came hours after a government reshuffle left out two soldiers who led the coup in August last year and raised fears of a second military takeover.

2/10 Cde Chehondo’s memory is failing or he is an ignorant person. Interviewees often get events mixed up, more so when the subject is something that happened 4 decades ago, so I’ll cut Cde Chehondo some slack & say his memory is failing. Why?
