It’s time for an introduction!
I’m Marky, an NSF-REPS participant currently managing the genomics center @ the Moore lab (and applying to grad programs this fall!)
I work w/ neotropical birds, finding interest in museum-based work and comparative genomics!
You ever nearly pass out from how amazing a bird is and then it goes and decides to pose perfectly?
Still blown away by this amazing encounter with my lifer Swallow Tanager
I took way too many photos of this gorgeous owl, but it was worth it 😍
When am I ever going to see a Snowy Owl against palm trees again???

You ever wondered what a couple seconds of a tiny portion of sky would look like during a morning with 180,000+ migrating warblers?
That’s oddly specific, but wonder no more!
Because I can, here is a thread of some of my favorite bird photos I’ve taken
Starting with this freakin adorable Lapland Longspur during an ice storm in Louisiana
Since 2013, I’ve spent holidays at home admiring the incredible variation of Dark-eyed Juncos. I have notebook pages filled with juncos, attempting to categorize the ones at our feeders. 2022’s installment is a quick iPhone sketch, featuring Cassiar, Oregon, and Slate-colors.
Picked up this Whiskered Tern waterlogged in the sea yesterday. Underweight (65g) but otherwise fine. Unbelievably relaxed bird happy to sit on the dining table to be fed. 74g by end of breakfast this morning - hope to release tomorrow.
Nearly 1,000 migratory birds died at ONE building just this morning in Chicago. Imagine across the whole city.
Please please please consider turning lights off in your home and offices over night as our feathered friends make their journey south!

Just found out this little fluff nugget I helped band in 2017 in KCMO has been spending his winters in Dallas. Glad to see he’s still sporting an angry face!
Probably my favorite photo of the Connecticut Warbler 😍 I’ll never forget this experience. Having this skulker of a bird slowly walk closer to me as it went about its biz was truly enchanting
Got to catch up with one of the bluest blue birds to ever exist- a Lazuli Bunting!
Bear Divide was a little slower today, but over 60 LazB’s flew by making for a wonderful morning.
(Bird handled under proper supervision and permitting before being released on his way!)
When traveling, I often have the urge to draw but don’t have the materials on me. So, I resort to drawing with a finger on my iPhone 😅
Some comparisons of Kentish and Snowy Plover plumages from the other day when art motivation struck!
My first scientific poster ever! Bummed I couldn’t be live, but so excited for what this project has become! Thank you all for tuning in and for the kind words and support. A huge huge thank you to the one and only

When you coincidentally wake up at 5am, so you decided to beat rush hour traffic and go see a Snowy Owl in Southern California. The traffic back at 8 wasn’t even bad, somehow!
Number 1,000 for the year has been observed!!!! 🥳🥳🥳
No bean goose sadly (it would leave the day I chase…), but seeing a Rough-legged Hawk for the milestone is almost better - best hawk around!
I FOUND A CONNECTICUT WARBLER!!!! The sneakiest of sneaky warblers- and I found it at a spot I’ve been checking since 2013 for this very species!! Totally over the moon right now 😭
“Today was the greatest birding day of my life.” -
@thebirdsguy
Is how I feel after observing one of the ~3 biggest flights of warblers ever counted on the planet.
The largest ever was 721,000:
Vid: 500 birds in 25s =~1,200 birds/min in this bit of sky
5-year-old me would be wide-eyed over the fact I was going to school for birds, 12-year-old me would be losing their mind!
First week into my PhD, classes at the University of Chicago, and a new badge for work at the Field Museum!
As a birder, I think it is completely fair to ask that my honeymoon someday is spent entirely on a boat chumming for tubenoses at thee Petrel Station in New Zealand
I’ve seen 999 bird species this year…I need one more!! Yet, I go home to visit family today through the new year and there are 0 easy birds I need there…Down to the wire!!
Few more photos of the supercell from last night! Was incredible to watch it rotating, yet a touch scary as it was coming straight for us! Thankfully no damage to cars, but some 2.5-3” hail did occur!
It was one of those rare weekends where you somehow see every last one of your target birds, have a great time with friends, and also see mind-blowing landscapes. The 6-hour drive home didn’t even suck!
With the new year, one of my resolutions is to spend time getting back into art more seriously. I regularly share my photos (which, are for sale and commission!), but I want to share more art. Would people be interested in purchasing prints or requesting commissions?
I had an AMAZING time last night presenting my first in-person poster ever at
#AOS_BC_2022
It was great to meet so many new faces and in doing so, getting to share some of the fascinating work we are doing at
@OxyMLZ
Love when young white male birders call you a liar over something dumb and then twist the story to make you look bad. This is why birder drama is so petty and just adds on to making the hobby less welcoming!
One of the most range-restricted and endangered birds I’ve ever laid eyes upon…Amazing views of Cundinamarca Antpitta yesterday at Refugio del Tororoi!! 🤯🤯🤯
Something more positive ❤️ My first lifer of 2023! A pair of gorgeous Queen (King) Eiders! These lovely birds have been hanging out at Ventura Pier for a few weeks. They thankfully stuck around long enough for me to drive up after work today.
Well, Bear Divide did it again! This morning
@kelseyreck
& I counted nearly 12,000 birds migrating through!
This is the third largest movement we have recorded, following close behind our largest day ever this past Monday with 21,000+ birds
Did you have your lights off? Over ONE BILLION BIRDS flew through the United States in just one night!!!!
Thank you
@DrBirdCast
for creating and providing such amazing tools to visualize and quantify bird migration!
It has been exactly a year since my first ever pelagic…I’ve now done almost a dozen pelagics and even completed my first spotter position aboard as of yesterday! I can’t get enough of the ocean and its birds.
After much deliberation over many incredible programs, I am very excited to announce that I will be starting my PhD in the CEB program
@UChicago
this fall!!!
Goodnight Chicago! Remember to TURN YOUR LIGHTS OFF!!
This radar image from right this moment shows a ton of green circles over the Midwest, which are actually nocturnal migrating birds (not rain!)
Mom surprised me with a trip to Santa Cruz Island. Turned into probably the best day of birding I’ve ever had in Southern California!! Red-footed Booby, 6(!) Tennessee Warblers, double digit warbler species in general, and of course Island Scrub-Jays
Today was not all doom and gloom, and in fact, we actually were able to witness well over 100,000 birds migrating in real time!
There’s no photos or anything in the list yet, but if you’re curious, check it out!
I forgot how much I love banding birds! Spending a few of my free mornings banding migratory birds at Bear Divide has been one of the best experiences ever! Can’t wait for more!
(All birds safely handled under proper permits and training!)
Birding for 20 years has provided me with many a story, and one of the most amazing ones IMO was finding a Black Rail scooting around under some oak trees in the Bay Area
More than 300 Hudsonian Godwits this morning. Plus, a banded bird from Chile! Often these godwits will make a nonstop trip from Chile to the center of the US.
I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t a bit of an academic dream of mine to be on a jay paper with
@LAevolving
!
It was super cool to be a part of this work (and even do a little art for the figures!). I love when taxonomic questions lead to cool stories!
Sitting in my comfy chair, drinking coffee, eating a croissant, and scoping a Parasitic Jaeger from my apartment has got to be one of the coolest yard bird sightings for me so far!
Should’ve started this in January, but I am recently inspired!
I am going to keep a thread of my life birds in 2023, starting with my first one only 3 days into the new year:
#1681
- King Eider (Or, Queen Eider) during sunset off the Ventura Pier
Back from Colombia 😍 Time to share some of the gorgeous birds!
Here’s the amazing Many-striped Canastero, a unique little bird that lives above ~10,000 feet in a special habitat known as páramo (which happens to be one of my all-time favorite environments now!)
Grateful for everything I learned at LSU, which has allowed me to share that knowledge with others and use it in a productive manner! Here’s 20-some odd specimens I’ve been able complete here at
@OxyMLZ
Trying to keep the art inspiration going - some Oystercatchers and Bell’s Sparrows inspired by some of my more recent outings! Might color in the oystercatcher bills…
Unlike my pets, I most definitely have favorites whenever I draw out a series. This C.s. restricta portrait has certainly gained the top spot for me currently- and it’s not even finished!
It is all still sinking in, but I am overjoyed to announce that I was awarded funding via NSF’s new REPS supplement! I will be working on the Mexican Bird Resurvey Project at

starting this fall!!
QRT with your wing art!
All of my artwork technically has wings, but usually they are folded. However, open wings were a must for the raptors in this field guide I’m working on!

I rather enjoy the crazy assortment of exotic bird species down here in LA, so here’s a thread on some of the introduced species to Southern California!
First up: Scaly-breasted Munia, a cute little finch from India & SE Asia I regularly encounter in grassy urban areas of LA
Finished up my final day of work at MLZ ☹️ Prepped my last bird, a salvaged Common Loon.
Words cannot begin to describe my amazing time at the Moore Lab, nor the amazing people I worked alongside!
I am going to miss California, LA, and MLZ dearly!
