Donald Trump is a racist and a fool and his “mugshots and sneakers” campaign to Black voters proves both.
On last week’s Weekend DeBrief on

“When we ask ourselves how America became the world’s greatest jailer, it is natural to focus on shiny objects: national campaigns, federal legislation, executive orders from the Oval Office. But we should train our eyes, also, on more mundane decisions and directives, many of…
Actually, DC is bordered on 3 sides by land + 1 by water. We’re majority people of color, a pop. >than VT & WY. We mostly work private sector, pay more fed. taxes than 22 states; more per-person than all. We pray on Sunday, vote on Tuesday (or early) & pay our dues all week long.
Sen. Chuck Grassley: "Washington D.C. is an island surrounded by reality. Iowa -- common sense -- it's what I come home for to bring back to Washington D.C. Iowa is the real America."
Starting in June, D.C. police will not be the first responders to some mental health calls in the city.
Under a new pilot program, 911 operators will instead send unarmed teams of behavioral health experts and peers to the scene.
Thanks to
@VP
for convening today’s gathering of young men of color to talk about issues we face most acutely + think critically about ways The
@WhiteHouse
can create opportunity, expand access, & make this a nation where all of us are seen and have a seat at the table. An honor.
As I said this morning in committee- if Monumental Sports will renege on its agreement with DC why would we ever believe they would not do the same to us?
DC teachers are paying for supplies out of their pockets. Schools can’t fit a field trip in the budget. Principals are choosing between paying for a behavioral tech or a librarian. When do we get to the argument that underfunding them is a threat to public safety?
Multiple armed officers with a ballistics shield, apparently trained to deescalate and protect “sanctity of life”, fired on a 27-year-old they startled awake at a traffic light.

Let’s build

for all of us.

I believe that what self-centered men have torn down men other-centered can build up.”

Great. They’re not closing the store.
They’re just not putting anything in it.
In the nation’s capital, whole communities become deprived of basic essentials while leaders underinvest and under-commit to lasting solutions.
The Giant Food grocery store on Alabama Avenue in Southeast D.C. will no longer be stocking brand name health and beauty items such as Colgate, Tide and Advil.

this afternoon to vote in person. Communities of color are showing up b/c our imperfect mail-in process has inequitably failed them.
Today’s 7pm citywide curfew — an hour before polls close — discourages voters who need to be heard most.

There is racism in transportation infrastructure. Residents use this footbridge every day to cross a highway that splits their community in half and it’s clearly been neglected for years despite it.
I have many questions that need answers.

Hearing of 4 shot (at least one fatally) tonight on the 400 block of Orange St — where I grew up, my family still lives &

was killed by police a few weeks ago.
Trust me when I tell you: we won’t police our way out of gun violence on Orange or anywhere else in our city.
What a beautiful

It’s time for

@Sen_JoeManchin
to do what is right. Right now.

While there are many strong voices in the contest for President, I believe Senator

This ain’t a drill! The attack on abortion rights is just one bullet in the gun the far right is aiming at popular democracy.
Whether it’s the right to choose, love, learn, or vote, we’re all in the crosshairs.
Tired of this talking point.
The reforms made in DC post-2020:
-Make police misconduct files available and open.
-Release body cam footage after shootings or use of force
-Limit use of chemical munitions
-Raised the bar for deadly force
Which one caused crime?
You want to know how DC can solve their problems? Repeal the post-2020 criminal justice reforms made in the wake of the BLM riots.
Repeal them all.

For those saying $250,000 is not rich in DC, go talk to the *average* Black resident who brings home < 1/3 of that trying to afford housing, childcare, transportation, and groceries in the same city.
Or the average
#Ward8
resident making 1/6 of that.
Word of the day is equity.
News! Excited to be named as Deputy Director of Leadership Programs at

In this new role, I’ll help develop and amplify the voices of thousands of leaders fighting for bold progressive change in their communities across the country.
It’s my birthday! 🎈
I’m so grateful for 28 amazing rotations around the sun — and for all the incredible people and experiences; the laughs and love that have made it worth living. I wouldn’t change a thing. With God’s grace, the best is yet to come.

Marijuana pop-ups and soft judges did NOT make this DC’s most deadly year in two decades — Ballooning inequality and the lack of urgency to address it did.
If you’re so passionate about improving public safety, show us how passionate you are about ending poverty.
If the residents of DC haven’t earned a piece of real America after 200 years of second-class citizenship, may we have a refund?
We’ll take it in
#DCStatehood
.
I support D.C. Statehood and home-rule – but I don’t support some of the changes D.C. Council put forward over the Mayor’s objections – such as lowering penalties for carjackings.
If the Senate votes to overturn what D.C. Council did – I’ll sign it.
Pretty sad to see city leadership throw artists and curators that have always been about uplift, peace, and empowerment under the bus for a gun violence crisis they’re failing to holistically address.
Especially when any other time they break their necks to use their platform.
New research shows that neighborhoods in Washington, D.C., with more people of color, are exposed to more air pollution and have higher rates of disease.
Mitch McConnell pushed through Amy Coney Barrett’s confirmation 30 days after her nomination and 8 days before the 2020 election — the shortest consideration in recent history.
The Senate must conduct a rigorous, exhaustive review of Judge Jackson’s nomination to the Supreme Court. This is especially crucial as Americans families face major crises that connect directly to our legal system, such as skyrocketing violent crime and open borders.
When politicians use a violent incident to disparage “defund” rhetoric, they always conveniently forget to explain (1) how something that hasn’t happened yet caused it or (2) how more cops would prevent an incident police only respond to *after the fact*.
Happy 90th Birthday, Dr. King. In all, an embodiment of a dream inspired; of victories won; and of the promise of a brighter day — if we keep fighting for it.

Polls don’t close until 7pm today & 8pm tmrw. No matter how you shake it, a citywide curfew will suppress the vote for those Black & Brown communities who are showing up in person because the mail-in process has failed them or because they’ll attempt to avoid encounters with MPD.
Washington DC Mayor Bowser announces 7 p.m. ET curfew for the next two nights.
Bowser says the curfew will not impact the functioning of the city's primary election on Tuesday and essential workers and the press will be exempt from it.
I’m really not interested in hearing shit from “common sense” Republicans who made room for the radical right, allowed a fascist to co-opt their party, then either tip-toed around or downright embraced him and now want to pretend they had nothing to do with it. You can go, too.
The District:
•has more cops + spends more on cops/prison per capita than any state
•has highest incarceration rate of a state outside the Deep South
•has more men in DC Jail than enrolled undergrad at UDC
•has a 1 in 10 returning citizen pop
Soft on crime!? Miss me.
President Biden summoned the support of the Congress and a global alliance to defend democracy and the will of free people abroad — and won’t even raise his pen to defend them for those Americans closest to him.
“Black people make up 40% of
#COVID19
deaths in Michigan, where only 14% of the pop. is Black. In Chicago, where Black people make up 29 percent of the pop., 70% of COVID-19 deaths are Black residents.”
It’s time for DC to release its racial data. Now.
Today, my mom & I gave my 92-year-old grandmother — the granddaughter of slaves — a framed photo of her grandson and the first Black President of the United States. Denied the right to vote well into her 40s, she’s cast a ballot for us both — twice. So grateful this Christmas.
We all know a Charles McMillian in the hood — road tested, street smart, heart of gold, with a deep commitment to and love for his neighbors. He did all he could to show up for
#GeorgeFloyd
that day and still is, even in death. God bless him.
Charles McMillian, who tried to speak to George Floyd as officers first tried to put him in a police car and then later as Floyd shouted for his mama while Derek Chauvin kneeled on his neck, just broke down on the witness stand.
Court on a break now.
The values we’re advancing in this race are DC’s values:
65% support
#PoliceFreeSchools
& investing the $ in mental health + student supports.
83% support raising taxes on the wealthy, esp. those earning $350k or more.
This is what we’re fighting for.
We can’t separate the violence of racism from violence of poverty. In a DC where
#BlackLivesMatter
, poverty should be the crime — not being poor. Housing as a human right, a guaranteed basic income, education, mental health, addiction recovery. This is what we’re fighting for.
In light of recent protests over the death of George Floyd and other Black people killed by police, activists and local nonprofits are pushing for the city to allocate more toward ending homelessness.
The 14yr old son of a community activist in
#Ward8
was shot last night in Congress Heights. Someone fired 5 rounds at him & his 12 & 13yr old friends.
Where’s our outrage? What about him? What about his mom who serves her community too hard to be so miserably failed by it?
#Breaking
: Dozens are risking arrest in blocking the drop-off zone outside Reagan National Airport’s main concourse. They’re demanding safeguards for voting rights, D.C. statehood and reparations — marking the Voting Rights Act’s 56th year.
There should be a moratorium on new DC charter school applications and a serious discussion about what the hell we’re doing when it comes to public education.
We’re throwing bowls of spaghetti at a wall to see what sticks & our city’s most vulnerable kids are caught in middle.
On DC
#EmancipationDay
, we celebrate the living legacy of the nation’s ‘first freed’ — 3,000 enslaved Black Washingtonians emancipated on April 16, 1862, eight months before Lincoln’s proclamation and over three years before the 13th Amendment.
Deon Kay should be here, not a hashtag.
He deserved a 2nd (3rd, 4th) chance at success, not a death sentence.
He deserved a community where gaining access to opportunity is easier than gaining access to a gun. (1/2)
