The state of this tourist sign on Daunt St. It would take 10 minutes to clean it but it’s beyond
@corkcitycouncil
.
As a rate-payer, the idea of giving hard earned money to an organisation that can’t even do the basics is demoralising.
Only opened a couple of years ago, Mary Elmes bridge is filthy. As a ratepayer, the disinterest shown by
@corkcitycouncil
to the care of our city is disheartening.
Down O’Sullivan’s Quay the lovely 19th century stone bollards and railings are in an awful state.
@corkcitycouncil
have the equipment and headcount to do this easy job. There culture of barely doing the minimum prevents them from even seeing the need.
One of these 200yo bridges is in Strasbourg and is maintained by their city council.
The other is in Cork and is neglected by
@corkcitycouncil
. This isn’t hard to do.
All over the city centre, paved crossings have been allowed to deteriorate for years, with only the occasional primitive splodge of tar to patch them up.
Where’s the pride?
#corkcitycouncilisbroken
Nano Nagle bridge is totally manky.
1 hour with the pressure washer would transform it. Unfortunately the pressure washer is like the royal carriage and only gets rolled out for special occasions.
#corkcitycouncilisbroken
Nice to see the angle grinder out and a long-dead pole being removed on Lavitts Quay. Good work
@corkcitycouncil
.
There’s a few hundred more around the place but good to see this happening. The whole job took less than an hour.
These tree-surrounds/seats on Grand Parade are nice.
@corkcitycouncil
don’t maintain them though. They allow them to rot, break, then get a contractor in to replace them after they’ve totally fallen apart.
This row of wooden boxes were put around cracked plaster mouldings in the English Market by
@corkcityxouncil
in March 2023.
30m down the street, in 2022, a cafe totally restored far more ornate decorative plasterwork in 6 weeks.
It’s dispiriting to see tourists trying to look at these signs, one of the first things they look at in the city.
@corkcitycouncil
don’t have the interest or motivation to spend 10 minutes cleaning each of them with some sticker/ink remover.
#corkcitycouncilisbroken
This is grand, but a 3 sec video won’t disguise how grimy and poorly maintained the city centre is. Take a look at the pics on this account or take a walk around the city.
This isn’t down to the street cleaning staff, it’s a problem of leadership apathy and disinterest.
The culture of
@corkcitycouncil
and its leadership summed up. The washed patch was to remove graffiti but it highlights how filthy the rest is.
Sure, the river-sides of the bridge would take some planning, but at least spend another couple of hours to complete the insides.
Instead of cost-effective preventative or stitch-in-time maintenance,
@corkcitycouncil
prefers to let stuff fall to pieces, then put out a large tender to an external contractor for a full replacement.
The wooden seating on Grand Parade is a small example.
CCC boarded up the park in Grand Parade in late November, on the premise of imminent development.
It has sat there untouched and unavailable to the people of Cork for over 3 months.
#corkcitycouncilisbroken
There are a dozen of these dead poles on Patrick’s Quay alone. After spending millions on the recent upgrades, removing these eyesores was a step too far.
There are hundreds more blighting the city centre.
Parliament Bridge is one of Corks oldest bridges. Its beautiful old lamps have been broken for over a decade. Apathy or incompetence by CCC- it must be both at this stage.
#CorkCityCouncilisbroken
All over the city, the bike lane wands installed only a couple of years ago are falling apart and filthy. As predicted
@corkcitycouncil
won’t maintain them.
#corkcitycouncilisbroken
These tourist signs are well produced but
@corkcitycouncil
don’t maintain them. They are in poor condition all over the city. This stuff is easy.
When you hear a ccc exec saying ‘world class tourist destination’, remember that they don’t really mean it.

Such a shame to see historic Red Abbey in Cork city centre so neglected, the Cork Walks sign for tourist’s completely vandalised, bread being left out daily attracting hundreds of pigeons covering everything in cr*p. Not good
Nice to see John Behan’s lovely bronze Swan fountain highlighted by
@corkcitycouncil
on the hoarding around the park redevelopment.
That’s the same fountain that they didn’t maintain for the last 5 years and allowed to fall into disuse and disrepair.

The city CEO may be an efficient administrator.
However, I work 6 days/wk in the city centre and in the 10 years of her leadership of CCC I have never seen her there, other than at the odd event.
The culture of an organisation starts at the top. The best organisations⬇️
Good to see the rest of South Gate Bridge cleaned (there is lovely limestone there afterall😁) and the collapsed wall being fixed…patience is indeed virtue.
@corkcitycouncil
can’t be arsed taking the 10 minutes required to clean this tourist sign on Coburg St.
On the plus side, it has a lovely little plant growing on it now:
The lovely lighting installed 2 years ago at the fountain on Grand Parade is starting to g to fail.
@corkcitycouncil
maintenance won’t do the simplest tasks.
#corkcitycouncilisbroken
Poor old Parliament Bridge.
After a decade of chronic neglect by
@corkcitycouncil
it gets hammered by a car.
At least now the council will have to repair it. Let’s hope it’s a full repair and cleaning.
Then there’s this huge pointless sign hogging valuable footpath space next to Mary Elmes Bridge.
It probably in some EU funding regs that they had to erect it, but not forever surely.
The ornate mouldings on the English Market facade started to crumble last year.
CCC first fenced off half the footpath for 3 months, then put up these wooden boxes. Now nearly a year old - don’t hold your breath.
#corkcitycouncilisbroken
After three months of ignoring emails regarding the broken bollard lights on Oliver Plunkett Street, Director of Services David Joyce replied with a non-answer to my query asking if they'd be repaired or replaced.
Now, I get this.
Absolutely no interest in fixing them.

2/3….have a leadership principle of “going to Gemba”, or management by walking around. A certain proportion of a leaders time is spent on the ground, seeing the reality of how products and services are delivered.
This exposure to reality leads to speedier⬇️
3/3….and more accurate information flow, driving better decisions.
The absence of this leads the painfully slow and inefficient delivery of basic services we see around us in the city.
Check out all previous posts for evidence. No dynamic leader would allow this.
This would be great if we knew that when the first new paving stone gets loose, it gets fixed immediately.
That won’t happen so it’s better for everyone if the current crossings are replaced by tar. Not as nice, but fits with the maintenance capacity of CCC.
It’s more direct this time - the parody element seemed to upset someone in
@corkcitycouncil
Would appreciate RTs of the tweets so far to spread the word. The intent is to post daily. There’s no shortage of content! Thanks!🙏
An ad for an executive engineer….
1 self-motivated person with a toolbox, an angle grinder and some pride in their city would work wonders.
Imagine what 1 person working in a supportive organisation could get through in a year.
This pole 10 metres to the east has been dead for decades. Will be a good test to see if the one above is a one-off or part of a campaign to tidy up our footpaths.

Business rates is CCC’s biggest income - €103M in 2024 compared to €18M property tax.
The budget for street cleaning alone is €8.3M. Honestly, funding isn’t an issue - there is a culture of accepting low standards across CCC operations leadership.
Despite there being limited bike parking in the city centre, these two bikes have been abandoned, gathering rust on this stand in Grand Parade for over a year.
