If tinder (etc) work for dates, they should work for friendships too. I want a tinder for friends. As an adult with a very mobile life, making friends becomes increasingly hard. I’ve heard this concern of SO many. Tech-minds, give us this App please!

Many of us 4th year PhD seem to be suffering from fear that our research design do not work, our ambitious plans fails, our theories yield no interesting results & then... what? I've been told it is a common feeling. Knowing I was not alone helped me, so I hope it helps others :)

I swear I will never solo author any other paper apart from the two I need for the PhD. So boring. So much worse than if I did it with people. I genuinely don’t get the need to solo author at all.

I don’t think in person classes in fall is an option given this trajectory. Mixing undergrads of all parts of the country in dorms where physical distance is impossible is not feasible given U.S. lack of response. And let’s be clear, this situation wasn’t caused by the virus.

I don’t think we tell students enough that is normal to be bad at things before we get good. That getting good takes practice, which requieres time & is not easily substitute by just brute forcing knowledge into your brain. Being bad at things is how progress looks, not failure.

Having an abortion because you don’t want to have a child is perfectly valid. No other reason is needed and you don’t need to defend your choice. And not having that option on the table makes a country inhospitable to women.

I am struggling to find joy & excitement & motivation in my work these days. I always had. But it just feels so meaningless in light of these two years. My brain bounces btw work in something which helps people rn in a concrete way or go hug your parents. All else, seems… meh.

@causalinf When I was a RA the things that I appreciate more were: - Understanding the project apart from the task - Knowing the goals of the task - Knowing what were the major alerts/not do of the task - Having an efficient com. channel to ask about unexpected decision making 1/2

Dear 1st year phd-self: not every (or any) problem set, class, paper or exam is going to define your trajectory. Take courses that excite and challenge you. Measure success in terms of relative progress. Where you started and where you are. But priority 1 is to enjoy the ride.

For the first time in *10* years I am seeing family & lifelong friends somewhat regularly (& not missing every major event). I just want to say: international PhD students, I see you. And I see how the cost of the PhD is much much much more than the effort going into research.

Called my mum, 7pm in Spain: “Can’t talk rn I am here with my friends having a coffee in the sun”. I can’t wait to be a retired woman in Spain.
