Today marks the one year anniversary of the

plane crash Ukraine flight
#752
.
@L_Porterlabrats
want the Iranian community and all those mourning today that we will not forget. So much talent and potential lost at once - so many shining stars. Our star was Samira Bashiri. 1/
As the year anniversary of the tragic
#Flight752
approaches I received this gift from my student who was onboard the flight. She had “hunted for it” for me and her luggage did not make it on the flight. Her amazing parents sent it to me ❤️ I can’t imagine a more precious gift.
Samira made a lasting impact on our lab. She brought great expertise to our animal experiments & moved our breast cancer program forwrd. She launched our Instagram and shared our science with many around the world. A beautiful person. Our hearts break for so many people today 💔
Our lab mourns the loss of an amazing person. Samira was intelligent, hard working and VERY motivated to make a difference. Our heartfelt condolences to her family and friends back home 💔

He received an “ugly look” (aka hateful/mean)- not a concerned look, or a “are you OK?”. Asian people ARE being targeted because of the virus outbreak. We have the privilege here and need to be aware of our actions.
I received an email yesterday from my student Samira’s childhood friend in Iran. During a time of great pain and loss for her she took the time to write to me to tell me how much
@L_Porterlabrats
and I meant to Samira. I am in awe of the thoughtfulness of this girl 1/3

Grateful to my team, my colleagues - including Dr. Pillay, 92y prof emeritus who pushed me to do this and my supportive family & friends. Honoured to be the first woman in Science
@UWindsor
to get this title 🙏

Thank you! ❤️❤️
~3 years ago I received an email from a retired professor emeritus & former Dean of Science
@UWindsor
Dr Datta Pillay. I had never met him, he asked for me to call him. When I did he said that he was following my career and wanted to nominate me for Distinguished Professor. 1/

@cbsturdy
I read on about the biology of the bison - now I wonder how they survive hot summers 🧐 Nature is amazing - and we humans are wimpy :)
Yesterday in Iran they laid out beautiful 29 year old Samira to rest.
@L_Porterlabrats
wanted to send flowers and a donation as we would in Canada to show family and friends how much she meant to us. One of our Iranian students, close friend to Samira, coordinated this for us. 1/
I love science. I have intense pride in the value of our work, the quality of my team, the training that we provide. I love our community. But today - I’m tired of writing grants constantly, battling egos, defending the value of research. Today I’m tired of it all.
Tomorrow is my first day in my new role as VP Research & Scientific Director
@stjosephslondon
Grateful and excited to lead such a tremendous group of researchers.
So many loved Samira. I hope her family back home get our messages. She treasured her Iranian culture and her family and friends - I can’t imagine their pain. 💔
WATCH: "She was already doing very important work ... she was robbed of that opportunity."
@UWindsor
professor Lisa Porter talks about Samira Bashiri working on a cure for cancer inside the institution's lab.
She died on Flight 752 in Iran.

He taught me the importance of reaching out and actively encouraging colleagues to celebrate their achievements. I vow to pay his kindness forward and to value mentoring above all else. Thank you Dr Pillay for being an amazing academic & mentor ❤️ Rest in peace my friend.
Some tough questions today at Queens Park. My message was clear - Universities and Colleges are the fabric of our communities driving job creation, supporting the economy & the health of Ontario. We need support to do our work

Happy day in the
@L_Porterlabrats
! Today we celebrate and give thanks as one of the lucky ones but there are so many just as deserving! This was our 3rd submission and way too close for comfort.
@ScienceMin
please keep pushing forward -there is too much great science unfunded!
Here is a picture of Samira at my house for our yearly holiday party. She had it on her instagram. She really loved learning about Canadian culture and sharing it with her friends around the world.

Welcoming more international students is how to honour those we lost in Ukraine flight PS752:
@LisaPorter2
, who lost an Iranian research assistant in the tragedy, writes that supporting global talent on campus and in our communities will help build peace
We are grateful that she got to hang on to her loving husband - PhD student
@UWindsorENG
Hamidreza in those final moments. They were 2 of 174 passengers aboard that tragic flight 💔 /2
Samira was trained as a vet in Iran. She loved animals, medicine, science and learning. She was determined and very hard working. She started as my research assistant but was going to start graduate school Sept 2020 - she was so excited and would have accomplished great things.2/
My boy turned 18 today - quarantine birthday with his immediate family. He didn’t complain - he knows we need to
#flattentheCurve
. Hard for me to believe time is going by so quickly 💕
Weird meeting this morning where I was given the ‘heads up’ that it appears to some people that my RAs/postdocs might have more expertise than me & might be taking on a leadership role with students. Boy I have thoughts. 1/
Samira was proud to be Iranian and wanted us in Canada to see the beauty in Iran. She also immersed herself in Canadian culture and would share this with her many followers on Instagram. In a world with so much violence and hate - Samira brought kindness and understanding. 5/
I had the honour of meeting Samiras father in person and her mother on video conference. When the news of the crash happened we didn’t think of politics - we thought of them and the magnitude of their loss. Of her brother and many family and friends. She was loved by so many 4/
Today we welcomed
@BashiriSamira
mom and dad to the lab. The pain that they feel every moment of every day is unbearable.
@L_Porterlabrats
will strive to be better always in her honour 💔
#PS752
we will never forgive you.

Yesterday I was feeling VERY low. The stresses of supporting a lab on unstable
@CIHR_IRSC
funding hit me like a tidal wave. Before I sent this tweet my thoughts were - it’s not professional, I’m a leader who should only post the positives and that I would be judged harshly for it
I love science. I have intense pride in the value of our work, the quality of my team, the training that we provide. I love our community. But today - I’m tired of writing grants constantly, battling egos, defending the value of research. Today I’m tired of it all.
This is a photo from a celebration dinner after I received Distinguished Professor with Dr Pillay as host (in white). Today we lay him to rest. I only knew him for a short time but I’m so grateful for his mentoring and selfless support & encouragement. 4/
Submitting a CIHR on the runway while plane is about to take off. That’s more excitement than I can handle these days 😰😰😰 Now fingers crossed. Best of luck colleagues! 🤞🤞🤞
My class
#regen454
has to be cancelled today because you know “freedom” Students can’t get to class to get their education that’s already suffered. We are back online because of these vaxholes 🤬
#FreedomConvoy2022
you are not helping - we don’t want you here! Get the truck out!!
@MeghanRiddell
Oh Meghan I send heartfelt condolences to you and to your team. We also lost one of our lab family and are still struggling to believe it is real. So much potential lost on that plane 💔💔
Talking with colleague from a school I interviewed at many moons ago. “You shouldn’t have worn high heels,our Dept doesn’t like women dressing like women” 😳 Appreciate honesty & glad I didn’t end up there but WHAT?! Wore extra high heels this week! 👠

@CDNWomenSTEM
@naomirwolf
Do you have any idea AT ALL what your talking about??? First of all the qPCR test for COVID harvests RNA, not DNA (big difference!). Second to harvest gDNA and do sequencing is a shit ton of money - who exactly is paying for these secret tests?
But I am happy that we could be there - showing solidarity with those grieving. Samaneh’s brother put the Canadian flag and
@UWindsor
logo on this banner with the note I had written for the card. They put the note on a large sign by our flowers at the front of the mosque /5
Happy Mother’s Day peeps! My own mother died of cancer (undiagnosed primary) ON Mother’s Day. Hence I will work on completing a paper today, for her. Thanks to my

@WesternU_CTCR
peeps and the

who walk today for all those moms who need their support!
While in Iran Mehri and Samira hunted for the perfect gift for me. 💔 Samira wanted me to see the beautiful
#Iran
that she knows. Mehri sent a photo of the art she selected.
This is who Samira was. She saw beauty when others see hate and fear. We need people like Samira.
Amused thinking that there once was a time when I actually enjoyed the creative process of writing a grant. That has been officially beat out of me. Now I write almost in fear - which are the critical controls to mention? Is this aim to risky - or not risky enough?
My first response is - yes of course they have more experience and expertise in a number of things - that’s why we are a team! Im not ashamed of that - im proud that they are my very capable, awesome team. 3/
The role of postdocs and RAs in academia is SO under appreciated. They drive research, training and learning! Without them I can’t take on as many students as I do - I can’t expand the questions we are asking - and I sure couldn’t handle my admin and teaching load! 4/
Debated on wearing my old Alice Copper concert shirt and doing a handstand while getting the vaccine - but I decided to act my age 🤘

I remember being at “work” after losing my baby in second trimester. Trying not to fall apart. Trying to focus. This is a good idea! (For me it was my post doc lab, my supervisor would have supported me but I hid it. It would been so much worse if I hated what I was doing).
New Zealand just approved a new measure allowing for paid leave after miscarriage. The legislation is believed to be among the first in the world, applying to couples who lose a baby at any point.

I’m in academia now and couldn’t be happier! ...except while grant writing, getting rejections, dealing with U politics, forms and meetings ... but then student runs in with fab result
#BestJobEver
😁 The madness can’t be explained.
Debating on making this my profile pic. Happy Friday folks 🤗... but really does Friday exist anymore? 🤔 It’s another meeting packed day, juggling family, overcommitted, with looming grants and papers that are causing my head to explode 🤯😓

#NotEnoughHrsInDay
I hate when I see sad or confused faces during a midterm/exam. Or get a RIP written on the front page 😫 Means I didn’t get through to that person :( Testing is necessary ... but it sucks. Students - please always ask when your stuck or confused ... we want you to succeed!
Update. I just returned from his celebration of life. A packed room for someone mid-90s. No mention of his many papers or grants. MANY heartwarming stories of gratitude for his collegiality, his teaching, mentorship and service.

This week I was hopelessly buried. What kept my research program afloat - my amazing RAs
@L_Porterlabrats
❤️ My RAs are PhD trained experts paid grant by grant. I’m so thankful and lucky to have them at my side 💕 ... students and my research depend on them.
Well that’s a rap! 5 days of

Dear reviewers who insist on mouse crosses that will take YEARS (not to mention $$) as the only acceptable method. These are not “simple” expts to confirm in vitro and transplant analysis. All other analysis is not irrelevant. Students DO need to graduate. Oh & you have no soul.
@2StefanMoore
It is impossible to understand the rationale for mocking someone who is hurting 😞🤯. Overcoming addiction is an amazing achievement that deserves to be celebrated!!! 👏 Thank you for posting! ❤️
Thank you to the Nobel committee for making this perfect choice.

If we have learned nothing else from Covid it should be that basic biomedical research is the foundation that allows us to move rapidly on new life saving discovery. This decay in funding can’t continue!
