A nature print from Linnaeus himself! Just found by @isacharmant in Linnaeus' own copy of Genera Plantarum, 2nd Ed, 1742- the very subject of our Advent Calendar 2023! The repeat prints look like blocks. Any ideas what flower this could be? @fungi_flowers @ALillieSvensson

This unpromising buckram folder hides a @LinneanSociety treasure: ten delicate photographic prints of ferns, made by the pioneering artist-naturalist Cecilia Glaisher in 1855. Part of a larger unfinished project, these may be the only copies in existence.

We’re very saddened to hear of the passing of E. O. Wilson at 92, a Foreign Member of the Linnean Society who was awarded our Tercentenary Medal in 2007 for his numerous contributions to the study of evolutionary biology (seen here accepting the award). He will be greatly missed.

It's time we shouted about our beautiful Library as part of #LibrariesWeek . 3 best things about it in a short thread: 1/ it's a beautiful space, built in 1873 when New Burlington House was built for several Learned Societies, including us.

Norway spruce is an evergreen tree native to Europe. ‘Spruce beer’ was once used to treat scurvy! Every Christmas, the city of Oslo sends a tree to Trafalgar Square in the UK in thanks for its support during World War II. From Michaux’s ‘North American Sylva’ (1818-19).

The 16th century En Tibi herbarium, one of the oldest plant collections in existence today, is ‘deciphered’ here for the first time. @BotJLinnSoc Its maker was influenced by major authors such as Dioscorides, Theophrastus, Pliny and Fuchs. Read paper here:

Exactly a year ago, we closed the gates to Burlington House oblivious of what lay ahead of us. And that all we would want is a vaccine. We are still at home but the pavement plants are having a party! More than anything, we have all realized the possibilities of our absence.

Darwin had a great eye for spotting species new to European science at the time. Nearly everything that he collected had never been seen in England before including a cucumber specimen, which may now be extinct. ⁦ @EdwinRose3
