New post: After spreading false bribery claims about the Bidens for months, Iowa's Senator

now casts himself as the hero who forced the FBI "to do their job."
My look at his attempt to rewrite history:
Breaking: Abortion remains LEGAL in Iowa as Iowa Supreme Court splits 3-3 on
@IAGovernor
's effort to reinstate 2018 abortion ban.
The split ruling leaves the lower court decision in effect under operation of law. So 2018 ban is still enjoined:
.
@KimReynoldsIA
just claimed OB/GYNs are leaving Iowa because of "tort reform." What an absolute joke. Our malpractice insurance rates are low. Everyone knows why OB/GYNs don't want to practice in states where politicians try to interfere with best medical practices.
.
@kearneyiowa
: "On a brighter note, I see that many of your staff got massive raises this year. Your office says these raises were an 'important investment' in Iowa. Could I suggest that feeding hungry kids might be an important investment?"
Background:
New post: Iowa's school board election results were a rebuke to Governor Kim Reynolds and the GOP-controlled legislature.
"Progressives win, book banners lose many Iowa school board races"
Amazing:
@JDScholten
writes that no one from
@iowademocrats

@dccc
, or
@DNC
has reached out to ask about his 2 cycles as

nominee. "No one has asked what we learned, what we did right, what we did wrong, or about our data, or anything else."
As
@AriBerman
recently observed, "The real court packing was when Mitch McConnell blocked Merrick Garland 8 months before election but confirmed Amy Coney Barrett 8 days before election when 65 million had already voted"
Packing the Supreme Court is the wrong thing 2do It would politicize the court & destroy the respect of the judicial branch This isn’t just a Republican position Justices Breyer & Ginsburg &others agreed 9 is the right number + Pres Biden called the idea "boneheaded"
@justinkcomer

hoping Iowans won't find out her new "grant opportunity" for child care is possible ONLY because of the American Rescue Plan, which she denounced as a "blue state bailout" (and which every Iowa Republican in Congress voted against).
So bizarre to brag about hoarding nearly $2 billion when education, mental health, and other services are massively underfunded.
Iowans have been visiting state parks in large numbers but the park rangers have lost their housing!

Reader comment on this reporting: "I know this man. He is no RINO. He's an arch conservative. This isn't an attack on a guy who [doesn't] hold true to conservativism or even Republicanism. It's an attack on a guy who recognizes the difference between Republicanism and fascism."
ICYMI,
@TomBeaumont
's story on retribution against longtime GOP activist in Quad Cities: "Within a day of declaring that Trump should be impeached for his role in the deadly Capitol riot, Millage was forced to step down as chair of the Scott County GOP."
If these results hold up, it would be huge repudiation for
@IAGovernor
and GOP agenda for Iowa's public schools. Looks like suburban voters don't want to ban books and punch down on LGBTQ kids.
Early returns look good for the public school-oriented candidates for school board in the suburbs of Des Moines (West Des Moines, Waukee, Johnston, Ankeny). Most of the Moms for Liberty type candidates are trailing. But I can't tell which precincts haven't reported.
Sick burn from our neighbor to the north after the school book ban
@IAGovernor
signed into law this year suffered a major setback in federal court Friday:
One of my favorite moments from this year.
We’ve ensured no child goes hungry at school, supported our food banks, and invested in prepared meals for Minnesotans who need an extra hand.
In Minnesota, we’re not banning books – we’re banishing hunger.

Where is my "bill of rights" not to have other people's ideology and homophobia limit my child's education?
Gov. Kim Reynolds said she wants more transparency over what books are in school libraries and the curriculum taught in classrooms.
Republican lawmakers said a priority this upcoming session is drafting a parent "bill of rights."

I don’t want to hear from “business leaders” who fret now but did NOTHING to discourage Iowa Republicans from enacting hateful, discriminatory laws. They don’t care about civil rights or human dignity.
Business & industry leaders say they continue to struggle to recruit and retain top-quality workers. Some expressed concerns national attention over Iowa laws targeting LGBTQ individuals could exacerbate state's workforce recruitment & retention issues.

did something to help the tens of thousands of food insecure K-12 students, instead of underfunding public schools and diverting hundreds of millions to private schools.
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (DFL) explains why he rejected Republican lawmakers' attempts to means-test school meals for K-12 students:
"The haves and the have-nots in the school lunchroom is not a necessary thing. Just feed our children."
I hear this all the time from people. At least several times a week.
Another sentiment commonly expressed: if I had known Iowa would be like this I would never have taken the job here (or moved back to raise my kids, etc.).
Republicans including
@IAGovernor
said Biden's student debt relief was unfair to those who didn't go to college, or worked hard to pay off their student loans.
Doesn't the same logic apply to her school voucher plan?
Why have rainy day funds if you won't tap into them during the worst pandemic in a century?
Why is it good to hoard the public's money in a time of great need for hundreds of thousands of Iowans?

Good luck finding people to deliver the babies women will be forced to have.
Passed a small group of Iowans celebrating the abortion ban on my way to work. I wonder if they'll cheer when they need an ObGyn, a general surgeon, rural FM/ER care, nurses, chaplains. We won't be here. Also Iowans this is horrible. But know that this isn't the end. 1/2

New post by Bruce Lear: The facts are not on Governor Kim Reynolds’ side, so she shouted, ridiculed, and condescended to public school teachers and administrators looking for specific guidance about Iowa's new education law.
They already do. I get regular emails from my son's teachers. Nothing prevents me from reaching out to learn more.
Micromanaging teachers by forcing them to post all curriculum material a year in advance just hurts education (prevents teachers from adapting to class needs).

New data shows they couldn't have been more wrong.
Iowa governor wants "her own" attorney general and a state auditor who will never hold her accountable.
She has never been able to tolerate any independence from officials duly elected by Iowans to do their jobs.
Gov. Reynolds: “We’re going to keep Iowa red, and make it redder than it already is. I want my own AG and a State Auditor who won’t sue me every time around.”
She’s also optimistic a GOP challenger will take out incumbent Dem Congresswoman Cindy Axne.

Iowa's state budget will be a shambles by 2026.
I thank the people of Kansas for the honor to continue serving the state we love. These first 4 years were about getting our state back on track. These next 4 years are about making sure Kansas lives up to its potential as the best place to raise a family. The future is bright.

To the parents who are frustrated with what’s happening: Know that I and members of this legislature have heard you loud and clear. Enough is enough. Parents matter, and we’re going to make sure you stay in charge of your child’s education.
I will be seeking info from the U.S. Treasury's Office of Inspector General on whether this is an allowable use of funds from the American Rescue Plan (which Kim Reynolds opposed in 2021).
The ARP did give states more flexibility than the CARES Act did, but there are limits.
Today 109 Iowa National Guard soldiers deployed to Texas to support Operation Lone Star and protect their fellow Iowans and Americans from the crisis at the U.S. southern border.
Thankful for their service!

Correct. And the new Des Moines Christian campus is the fanciest set of school buildings I've ever seen in Iowa. Extremely wealthy student body and Iowa taxpayers will soon be subsidizing most if not all of them. (Income limits disappear in year 3 of the program.)

It takes real chutzpah to file many bills attacking LGBTQ and especially trans Iowans, over a period of years, and then scold activists for shouting and calling you names.
No one has to "behave civilly" to earn basic human rights.
If you wish to enjoy civil rights, being able to act and behave civilly is a prerequisite.
Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr both understood and demonstrated this. You overcome an “enemy” by making them your friend.
If Dems say this $1.9 Trillion bill is needed to help ppl suffering—why are they sending checks to ppl who make up to $200,000 even if they haven’t lost income?

My former neighbors were educated in Catholic schools and planned same for their kids. First two went through Catholic schools K-12, but when their youngest had a learning disability, the school they'd long supported refused to meet his needs. They moved him to a public school.
This is one of the most common things I hear from people across Iowa. If I'd known our state would be like this, I would never have... (taken the job here, raised my kids here, moved back here, etc).
No doubt many Republicans would be happy to see these people go.
In my 75 years, I’ve never been more depressed by the direction my state of Iowa is headed. Once so proud of my state but no more. I would never have chosen to raise my family in Iowa, as it is today, at 25. I’m too damn old to move now, but every day I become more disillusioned.
Bookmarking this for reference in a few years, when the America Rescue Plan funds run out, the latest GOP tax cuts are fully phased in, and Iowa's budget crashes like what happened earlier in Kansas and Louisiana.
