I joined
@AmaraCNN
today to discuss the legal whiplash from
#SB4
, TX’s controversial immigration law. As litigation continues, we’re hopeful the courts will recognize it for what it is — a blatantly unconstitutional effort that plays politics with the lives of desperate people.
Just shameful. We estimate there are 88,000 allies and family members in the Special Immigrant Visa application process. 2,000 is just a drop in the bucket. If that’s the best we can do, it will be a permanent stain on our nation’s reputation.
The U.S. government have likely rescued less than 2,000 Afghan interpreters and their family members at this point.
U.S. officials said on Friday that the number was about 1,200.
HUGE NEWS! We just won our case against the Trump administration and its executive order that would have allowed state and local officials to block refugee resettlement in their jurisdictions! This is a massive victory over those who would use refugees as political pawns!
NEW: The Biden admin just announced the Welcome Corps, allowing Americans to privately sponsor refugees & offer resettlement assistance to newly arrived families.
This is a forward-thinking approach to leveraging the generosity of the American spirit.

: we must hold accountable each and every official who forsook basic decency, core American values and humanitarian law to allow our government to traffic in kidnapping. In the Land of the Free, families belong together.
THREAD: Since we're in the middle of a national dialogue on the pervasiveness of racism in U.S. police departments, let's talk about how immigration enforcement (ICE + Border Patrol) have also militarized xenophobia to oppress minority communities of color.
I dedicate my latest to my own mother, who made the impossible decision to flee our home, as well as the thousands of asylum-seeking mothers desperately seeking to protect their children today. We must do better by these courageous, selfless women.
Congratulations to the daughter of refugees and Olympic Gold medal winner, Suni Lee!! 🥇🥇

Nobody wins in the cruelty contest between DeSantis, Ducey, and Abbott. Asylum seekers (including children) LEGALLY crossing the border had to flee the only home they’ve ever known.
Shame on all those who would exploit vulnerable migrants for naked political theatre.
The governor of Florida paid to fly about 50 migrants from Texas to Martha's Vineyard.
3 migrants told NPR a woman lured them onto the plane, saying they'd be flown to Boston to get expedited work papers.
"She offered us help. Help that never arrived."
BREAKING: House and Senate introduce the Afghan Adjustment Act!
We are deeply grateful to Congressional leaders for recognizing the urgency and moral imperative to keep our promise to our Afghan allies.

We didn’t hear it, but it’s also worth noting:
The state of our union is strong for having welcomed 76,000 Afghan allies as our newest neighbors. The state of our union will be stronger when we keep our promise of protection to the thousands more left behind in Afghanistan.
I need to ask for your prayers and thoughts. Tomorrow morning, at 9 AM, under general anesthesia, a world-class surgeon at Johns Hopkins will remove a cancerous lump and prophylactically my left breast.

INCREDIBLE NEWS:
@POTUS
has announced he will approve an executive order to restore refugee admissions! It will take time to repair the damage, but the EO will position the US to resettle 125,000 refugees in the administration’s first full fiscal year in office. 👏👏👏
Thank you
@ratemyskyperoom
! And more importantly, 10/10 to all the communities — including Martha’s Vineyard, NYC, Chicago, and DC — who have stepped up to welcome asylum seekers. Political theatre aside, they show us the best of American compassion and generosity.
I'm out of surgery and feeling sore, but stronger than ever! Thank you so much for your love, prayers and support --it's such a comfort and source of strength to know you're standing with me in this fight!
Stat of the day: Yesterday, female candidates ran in 19 open House Democratic primaries in Ohio, Indiana, West Virginia, & North Carolina.

This is huge. Five years after thousands of migrant families were cruelly and deliberately separated with no plans for their reunification, this will be the first time officials responsible for this shameful policy might face some degree of accountability.
This study demonstrates that refugee resettlement is firmly within our national interest, both in terms of maintaining our global humanitarian leadership and in terms of bolstering federal, state, and local resources.

800 is good. But 80,000 is the benchmark we need to hit if we are going to save all the allies in the Special Immigrant Visa application process alongside their family members.
NEW: Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman says today that “shortly” the US “will invite more than 800 Afghan Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) holders to board flights to the United States.”
This could bode well for the prospect of a bolder US role in addressing the Ukrainian refugee crisis. Angelina is a champion for displaced children and families worldwide — we deeply appreciated her visit last year to meet with our newest Afghan neighbors.

#SaveOurAllies
Very encouraging to see initial corporate support for Afghan refugees from companies like AirBnB, Uber, Walmart, but I'd really like to know how defense contractors (who profited TRILLIONS during the war) intend to pitch in to the resettlement effort...
The administration is flouting immigration-related court orders left and right. As of yesterday, migrant children remain in ICE custody despite a federal court order to release them, and today, it has demonstrated flagrant violation of its legal obligations to DREAMers.
In one year, refugees paid an avg $6.3B. Undocumented immigrants paid nearly $12B - or $975 per immigrant. Trump paid $750.
Who’s calling who illegal?!
Exclusive: The Times has obtained tax-return data for President Trump extending over more than two decades.
It shows his finances under stress, beset by losses that he aggressively employs to avoid paying taxes and hundreds of millions in debt coming due.
REMINDER: Our nation’s moral obligations to Afghans did not end when the last plane took off from Kabul.
There is so much more we can do to provide stability to those evacuated here, and safety to those left behind. How we act now will also define our legacy in Afghanistan.
NEW: Biden admin announces new limits to asylum, presuming migrants ineligible for protection if they didn't first apply in another country.
This rule reaches into the dustbin of history to resurrect one of the most harmful...

For
@CNNOpinion
, I wrote about the tragedy that shook so many of us to our core, the fatal failure of deterrence-based immigration policy, and how the US can implement solutions that benefit both Americans and people desperately seeking safety here.
History has proven that Guantanamo is no place to send vulnerable Haitian migrants seeking protection. Under no circumstances should it be used to line the pockets of a private, for-profit contractor. These individuals and families deserve dignity, not detention.
Congress has missed yet another opportunity to keep our nation’s promise of protection to the allies of America’s longest war. Despite many legislative opportunities and 3 separate WH requests, Afghans in the US will remain subject to the anxiety of unnecessary legal limbo.

The fact that only 2 people have been granted protection at our southern border makes it crystal clear- the U.S. has forsaken its legal and moral responsibility to extend protection and due process to the most vulnerable.

It’s been 6 months since the first evacuation flight brought Afghan allies to safety. It bears repeating that our promise is far from fulfilled to those left behind. This is about saving lives, reuniting families, and defending our deepest-held values.
Great news: for the first time since 2016, the U.S. Refugee Admissions program resettled more than 10,000 people in a month, reaching a pace consistent with

These consistently low refugee admissions numbers amid record global displacement underscore the urgent need to streamline the resettlement program. Every refugee we welcome is a life saved or a family reunited. To fall this short is unbecoming of the world’s humanitarian leader.
