Trans people are targets of cruelty right now. Official targets, official cruelty. By law. Life is already hard for them, and there is a significant bloc of assholes working night and day to make it harder. If you aren't in direct, vocal opposition to that, you are a bad person.
Full marks to a man in the cafe this morning. When his kids asked for a story, he immediately began: "Once upon a time there was a spaceship called the Nostromo. Everybody inside it was asleep..." I didn't want to leave
Please bear with us this morning. The shop was broken into in the early hours and we will be late opening as we’ve had forensics round.
We are all okay, though a little shaken! The burglars left with quite a lot of money but thankfully left most of the shop untouched.
We have been overwhelmed by the support from everyone after our burglary. After receiving a number of requests to set up a system for donating money, we have started a Gofundme page to help with the costs of repairs and to recoup the money lost.
The real brains behind this whole operation...Sooty! Sydenham's resident cat surveys our new takeaway service and they want you to place your orders here🐱9:30-4pm Mon-Sat🙌🏾
Note to self. I have had a lovely time on here today, talking about books. My dad died (I know: yawn). He couldn't talk about feelings etc so we met that by talking about: books. He read them, so did I. We did talk about our feelings, but at a remove. He's gone but the idea lives
Imagine something as ridiculous as a bookshop giving advice.
Hey. Fancy some advice? For 2021?
Read more science fiction. It's the only writing that will genuinely help you right now
Apart from poetry and philosophy (real philosophy, not Alan)
Be kind to people who work in shops
Yesterday a customer came in with the sole purpose of recommending "A Month in the Country" by J L Carr. I've been hearing about this book for YEARS. Anyway I said "OK, I give in. I'll order it." And I did. And it's here. And I'll read it after work today. Finally.
Normally I might not post something so personal, but the clue there is in the word "normally". To you they may just look like a couple of bruisers, but these are my grandsons who, as of today, seem to be canny fettle.
It is always awkward to say such things, particularly when one is a massively privileged individual like what I am. But there comes a time. This tweeter is an elderly straight white man (i.e. who cares? Quite right) but I speak for the shop when I say that we are Trans Allies.
We're turning 55 in October! To mark the occasion, we are launching a competition for a design celebrating the shop. The winning design will be printed onto a mug and Kirkdale tote bag and the winner will also receive a £100 voucher to spend at the shop! 🎉
From tomorrow, we are open and shut.
The shop as a physical thing is shut for the foreseeable.
We are working away nevertheless.
Happy to take your requests/orders whether emailed, tweeted, phoned, or simply shouted across our windows.
Do please bear with us.
William Hurt has died. What a superb actor, my generation's antecedent of Philip Seymour H perhaps. Intensely watchable, even though (or maybe because) he always seemed to be acting brilliantly IN THE WRONG FILM FOR THAT MOMENT. Distinctive and unforgettable. We are shut.
Hastily rereading A Room with a View, which we are discussing here tomorrow. It's absolutely terrific. Funny, sharp, and surprisingly naughty. The film is good BUT the prose is magical. You can read it in a day; he spent six years tinkering with it. That's why it's so good!
Just had an exchange about George Eliot and once again I must say this: I go on about other great things from the 19th century e.g. Emily D, Poe, Great Expectations, Melville who I rave about endlessly... all good. But if you want to be rewired and become modern: read MIDDLEMARCH
Our independent shops like
@KirkdaleBooks
&
@BillingsLondon
on Sydenham High Street are the lifeblood of our community. We need to reform business rates to support them and the thousands like them.

Decade...
I got an MA
my parents died
I became a grandfather
I somehow ended up here, 20 minutes walk from where I live
Anthony Braxton spoke kindly to me and I made a sensible reply
I read Middlemarch, Moby-Dick, Under the Volcano, and Ducks
A gentle note to help keep everyone safe and the shop open by continuing to wear a mask when coming to browse😷thanks to
@Rosie_Johnson
for this beautiful poster!
Do come and visit us tomorrow. It's traditional that people buy the unreturnable things we ordered by mistake, bad decisions & so on. Why not buy something which makes us secretly sigh with relief while displaying the customery poker face? You'd be doing us a terrific favour.
I know this will trigger an exodus and I will deserve it but anyway good evening to this establishment's ten thousand followers. Very kind of you to take an interest.
A colleague and I called the police a few months ago when we heard things getting very out of hand in the flats above the shop. The police arrived swiftly. It's important not to wait in a situation like that. I wouldn't want it on my conscience.
40 minutes to go! The angels of Sydenham supporting indies👼🏾we love to see it! Note: in the bottom left corner - we're all keeping a close eye on that bit of land across the pond...👀
This business is unequivocally and unambiguously a trans ally. We are here for you. We are horrified to see this. You are welcome here. It has been hard to form these words, perhaps they are wrong. So I hope you can forgive us. Words fail us.
A customer phones to order a book.
Me: Can I take your last name?
Customer: Urbaniak (offers to spell that)
Me: Like the violinist?
Customer: YES!!!
Kudos to my 18-year old self for reading the sleeve notes to Tutu so carefully
Excellent. Just sold a copy of Moby-Dick to somebody who said "I just think now's the time."
I vividly remember that feeling, just a few years ago. The week that followed was DELIRIUM
Impossible to articulate her importance to more than one generation of musicians. Carla Bley: thank you for the music. Wow, what a battler. Composer. Arranger. Bandleader. Visionary. STAR. Rest in Power. And all good vibes to Mr Swallow who was the right guy at the right time.
