Dudes are dudes in 100 degree or 25 degree weather. In the 8am or 10pm game. In front of 20 scouts or 0. Against a ranked team or a town ball team.
The ELITE are always elite. They don’t pick and choose. They. Just. Are.
#dudes
So why AREN’T you elite?
It’s because you choose Fortnite over sweat.
It’s because you need a coach to tell you exactly what to do and when to do it, instead of taking the initiative yourself.
HOW to be elite isn’t a secret. It just ain’t easy.
#BeObsessed
There are 32 JUNIOR COLLEGE players in the
@MLB
playoffs this year!
JUCO is a very overlooked & misunderstood option for recruits. Give yourself more time to develop, prove you can compete at the college level, get your grades up, and save money.
Don’t sleep on JUCO guys 🔥!
Physical activity during a baseball game...
-7 swings
-11 sprints
-4 ground balls
-1 fly ball
Time Invested= 3-4HRS
Does this sound a formula for success? No, it does not.
Prioritize development over playing a hundred games this year. You will like the results.
#baseball
Call me crazy but from what I’ve observed, the best coaches out there aren’t necessarily data driven, ex-pros, or geniuses but are elite communicators & relationship builders.
#baseball
If you don’t do one of the following...
1. Throw > 80mph.
2. Exit Velo > 85mph.
3. Run a sub-7 60yd dash.
You shouldn’t spend your money on “exposure”. You should invest it in development.
Work hard. Get better. Exposure only works when you’re good enough 💡.
#recruiting
If you…
1. Are not in HS yet.
2. Don’t throw over 80mph.
3. Don’t consistently hit the ball harder than 85mph.
4. Don’t run a low 7.0 60 or better../
Stop worrying about exposure. NOW.
Stop spending your money on exposure. NOW.
Lock yourself in a building & train. Period.
I’m sorry, but if you’ve never had to win baseball games (as a profession), you can’t criticize a coach for bunting.
It’s easy to say bunting sucks from behind an L-screen while “hitting nukes”.
Coach meaningful games. You’ll change your tune.
If you don’t do one of the following...
1. Throw > 80mph.
2. Exit Velo > 85mph.
3. Run a sub-7 60yd dash.
You shouldn’t spend your money on “exposure”. You should invest it in development.
Work hard. Get better. Exposure only works when you’re good enough 🤯.
#recruiting
Things I’ve never been asked by a college coach about a potential recruit...
1. How many trophies did he win when he was 10U-15U?
2. What is his batting average?
3. What is he ranked?
None of them. Ever. Focus on what’s important 👊🏻!
Good player✅Good Student✅Good Person✅
Sorry to break it to all the Game Changer obsessed people out there, but I had a total of ZERO college coaches ask me for batting average or ERA on any player in our program...and we had over 30 college commits in the 2019 class.
Stats aren’t as important as you may think 💰!
SENIORS-Just because you didn’t sign a piece of paper this week, doesn’t mean you won’t play college baseball.
Keep working for that dream! Great things are rarely given to us in a timely manner.
If you’re good enough to play, a coach will find you 🧰.
#Recruiting
Travel Baseball has caught a major case of “whosthereitus”.
The truth is, if you’re a dude, it doesn’t matter where you go because people will be coming for YOU.
Focus more on training & less on who you’re playing in front of...bc if you’re good enough, they’ll come 👊🏻.
#BeGood
PLAYERS-You say you work hard right? Try this...
Write down what you actually did this week. And then write down what you should’ve done but didn’t...& the reasons it didn’t get done📝.
Then imagine handing this paper to your dream school. Will they offer you after reading it?
Here’s th SECRET to being recruited....
Be really good. Work really hard. Get good grades. And most importantly, be the type of MAN a coach will want in his program.
#NoShortcuts
Wonder why you like your hitting or pitching “instructor” more than your coach?
Because they don’t have to be the bad guy & split up playing time/opportunities.
Train w/people who are honest, not people who blow up your ego. The truth will only make you better ⚒.
#DoWork
This picture is taken during the summer before entering HS.
One of these players gets taken 10th overall in the
@MLBDraft
just a few years later.
Care to guess which one?
Hint-being the best 14yr old does NOT matter 🔑.
#baseball
Want to know the secret to being recruited?
Be really good. Work really hard. Have strong academics. And be the type of person that coaches want to bet their reputation on.
There are no secrets, tricks, or shortcuts!
#recruiting
RECRUITS-This is a Head D1 Baseball Coach ⬇️. The details matter....A LOT. Don’t lose out on opportunities because you’re “above” doing the little things 👊🏻!
#recruiting
COACHES-The first person a player looks at after a mistake is YOU. Will they gain confidence from your behavior or will they become more negative?
The way we react to adversity tells our players how THEY should reactive to adversity.
Be relentless positive 👊🏻!
#BringIt
Players-If you don’t throw 80mph, run a sub-7.0, or have an exit velocity in the mid-80s , you don’t need to worry about “exposure”...you need to worry about your training program.
Don’t put the cart before the horse 🐎!
#Develop
Worried about getting a scholarship?
Getting that starting Varsity spot?
Hitting 90mph off the tee?
Sometimes we need to take a step back and ENJOY the game. It doesn’t last forever ⚾️.
Talent doesn’t make you special. Obsession does.
I’ve seen thousands of talented players. However, I’ve only seen a handful of truly obsessed players.
The big difference? One doesn’t spend the rest of their lives wondering “what if”?
Your career, you choice ⚒.
The difference between an elite player and everyone else, is that they don’t allow negative results to effect their immediate attitude, how they prepare for the game, and their love of the game.
Believe in yourself. Stay positive.
#character
PRO-162+ games plus national travel...lift at least 2x per week.
COLLEGE-40+ games plus 18 credits...lift at least 2x per week.
SUMMER BALL-Weekend tournaments and no school...too busy to lift 🤦🏼♂️.
Anything off here guys 🤔?
#GetBigHitBombs
The worst thing that has happened to amateur baseball is the lack of collaboration.
Travel VS High School VS Instructor
Instead of building athlete up, they end up having to pick sides.
At the end of the day, it’s all about them, not us. Let’s not forget the goal.
I have officially decided to stop using the word “grind”. We GET to play. We GET to train. We GET to practice. We GET to chase our dreams.
This is a privilege, not a grind💡.
#dream
Not reading the practice plan might not seem like a big deal.
Knowing what jersey to wear might not seem like a big deal.
Picking up all the baseballs after u hit may not seem like a big deal.
But when u add up all of these seemingly “small” things, it adds up to a HUGE deal.
As coaches, we don’t “make players”. We don’t win games. We don’t hit homers.
If we’re lucky, and I mean really lucky, we GET to play a small role in helping shape a players career. Keep that in mind guys.
#egoless
Cedric Mullins was a bench player in high school. He didn’t start until his senior year. He went to a junior college. He's 5-foot-8.
Tonight, he started in centerfield for the American League in the MLB All-Star Game.
FRESHMEN-I don’t care what division it is, what you were ranked, or what your scholarship was...it is NOT easy to start at any level of college baseball. WORK this winter “break” 👊🏻!
RECRUITS-Don’t think that college baseball is as glamorous as the College World Series makes it appear. This is earned. This is the result of countless hours of work, sacrifice, & sweat. This is the top .01%.
#EarnIt
One of the most dangerous things I see at the youth level is confusing Ws with development.
There is definitely NOT always a correlation. Pay attention to progress, not plastic trophies & GameChanger stats 🏆!
#GetBetter
You can learn a lot about a coach by listening to his post-game talks after a loss.
Is he constructive, team oriented, and ends it positively?
OR is he calling guys out, not taking responsibility, and ending it negatively?
Everyone is a “good coach” after a W.
#coaching
In case anyone is wondering what a catcher being 6ft behind a batter (Delaware COVID in-game rules) would look like...
Excellent way to injure all the catchers in the state. There is being safe & there is being overly safe...
How hard you play, how you carry yourself, and how you handle adversity when things ARENT going your way is the type of player, teammate, and man you are.
Everyone is a great teammate & worker when things are going well. The elite do these things ALL the time.
#character
PLAYERS-Let’s keep this simple...if you’re a serious baseball player & you aren’t finding a way to lift 2x per week in-season, then you AREN’T a serious baseball player.
Period ⚒.
What ticks me off is how the baseball “industry” has romanticized “committing”.
Committing to a college guarantees you nothing. Committing doesn’t mean you’ve made it.
You’ve just picked a college.
Focus on being a good college player💰.
#BeADude
PLAYERS-The more I’m around amateur players, the more I realize the insane sacrifices your parents are making to help you live your dream. THANK THEM 🙌🏻.
For fringy D1 players, I think that this back log of players ultimately helps.
You won’t have the option to go D1 & be the 35th player on the roster anymore.
Instead, go to a strong D2/D3/JC & PLAY! If you’re good enough to play pro ball, these avenues can still get you there.
On the eve of my wedding, I have one thing to say...wins, stats, and numbers fade over time.
The relationships you create and the way you make people feel will last forever.
People > Numbers.
I’ve become torn on the “multi-sport” argument. Here’s why...
1. Latin America-Playing primarily baseball has worked out pretttty well for them.
2. Obviously elite athletes play multiple sports. They’re really good! You play what you’re good at.
Just a thought 🤔.
PLAYERS-The line-up made in the first few weeks of the season is rarely the same by the end of the season.
If you don’t see your name where you want it to be…DO something about it. There is time.
#dowork
As the college baseball season kicks off, I don’t think I’ve ever seen an opening day line-up be the same as the playoff line-up.
If you didn’t see your name this weekend, the season is far from over.
If you did see your name, the season is far from over.
Keep grinding 👊🏻!
Being “elite” isn’t being in the top 1% of the talent. That’s called being talented.
Being elite means you reach your full potential (which is RARE). For some, that will mean HS ball. For others, it will mean the MLB.
Strive to reach your ELITE, not other peoples 🎯.
#BeYou
PLAYERS-If you think your coaches are going to tarnish their reputation when colleges/pro teams ask what type of person/worker you are...you got another thing coming !
Be the type of person people want to stick their neck out for 👊🏻.
#character
RECRUITS-Coaches notice negative body language. Don’t let something that is 100% in your control be the reason your name gets crossed off 📝!
#recruiting
Everyone is a great teammate when they’re winning. Everyone loves hitting when they’re swinging it. Everyone is tough when things are going their way.
How are you when things aren’t going your way is what kind of player you really are.
#adversity
I see a lot of coaches that do a lot of yelling and screaming and try to command authority. Authority comes through respect. Good coaches gain the respect of young people by being truthful and real with them. -David Cutcliffe
Authentic > Commanding Authority 💡!
#leadership
If you need supervision to get your work in, the end of your career is coming ⏳.
Elite players don’t need their hand held. They love it too much ⚒.
#BeObsessed
Instead of concerning yourself w/ who is the best 10U, 12U, or 14U player, focus on being the best when it truly matters.
Be the best 18yr old. Be the best 22yr old. Be the best 30yr old.
Development is long term. Don’t get caught admiring the view in the rear view mirror 🚘.
Quit seeking out praise. Quit seeking out recognition. If you’re playing this game to impress people, your career is already over.
Play because you love it! Work because you don’t want it to end ⏳!
#ForTheLoveofTheGame
Losing sucks. Winning is fun. But what matters more than either result, is how you respond to both outcomes.
Do you get complacent after a win? Do you get negative after a loss?
Or do you just continue to compete your tail off regardless of the last outcome 👊🏻?
#compete
Social Media will NOT get you recruited. Not Twitter, Instagram, Press Sports, etc. It WON’T help, unless....
You’re really good! You have good grades. AND you’re the type of man that coaches want to stake their reputation on.
Don’t focus on the hype, focus on being a dude🗝.
The more I watch youth baseball, the more I think we need to develop the athlete before we try & develop the “baseball player”. Don’t waste time w/mechanics, if a player can’t move well! Develop the athlete first. Baseball skills will come.
#athlete
Let’s get this straight baseball fans...anyone with even an ounce of competitiveness would have bat-flipped a 458ft HR after getting booed by tens of thousands. Anyone.
That’s not showboating, that’s emotion.
@bryceharper3
is human too.
#NoPheel
Rememeber why you started to play the game?
I bet it wasn’t to be ranked, get offers, or receive plastic trophies.
Sometimes we all need to be reminded WHY we play. It’s easy to get caught up in the other BS 🗝.
#LoveTheGame
Aww you played your third game of the week this week and you’re tired? These guys play EVERYDAY and are still there hours upon hours before games to put in work.
You either love it or you don’t.
#BeObsessed
Three and a half hours before a doubleheader today, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is out here on the field putting in work on his defense with four Blue Jays coaches.
RECRUITS-I hate to break it to you, but colleges are recruiting 5 players just as talented as you!
What makes you so special?
Seriously, what is it? Character, grades, work ethic, etc can all be major differentiators (both positively & NEGATIVELY) ⚒!
#recruiting
There is a substantial difference between being competitive & winning.
Competitiveness is an internal battle with yourself that CAN always be there.
Winning is an external battle with external factors that WON’T always be there, despite your best efforts.
Be a competitor 🦍.
There are no asterisks, pardons, or excuses to this statement...
If you are in high school and you are not LIFTING at least twice a week (year round-yes that means in-season too), then you are not that serious about baseball. Simple ⚒.
#Train
One of the biggest obstacles in development is a player’s fear of looking bad.
Guess what guys? We all stunk at that new drill that you struggled with today!
Be willing to look bad today so you can look better next week.
Failure isn’t fatal. Stay the course 🙌🏻.
#LongGame
Hey
@NCAA
👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻. This is officially out of hand. She can’t get into a PG-13 movie but is ready to make one of the biggest decision of her life? Don’t think so 🤔! Do your job.
#StepUp
Don’t be embarrassed of the program you commit to.
The truth is, it doesn’t really matter where you commit. Big or small...first or last...it’s your career & ultimately only YOU will determine just how far it goes.
This process shows you where you are, not where you will be🔑.
Still have never been asked for a player’s Batting Average, ERA, or Winning Percentage by a college coach.
So if college coaches (you know-the ones that are investing 5 or 6 figures in scholarship $) don’t care about that stuff...
Why do you 🤔?
Social media has caused us to focus more time on building a “brand” and less time on actually being good at what we do.
Being good > Being “known”.
#brand
Amateur baseball really needs some sort of licensing process for coaches which should include baseball IQ, fundamentals, game strategies, & background checks. It’s pretty ridiculous that ANYONE can coach our kids. Is anybody on this
@USABaseball
@MLB
@LittleLeague
?
#professional
Parent-“Hey coach-how is your team this year?”
Coach-“I’ll tell you in 10yrs when I see what kind of man they’ve become.”
Damn. That’s what it’s all about. Let’s not lose ourselves in the game. It’s secondary 💣.
#longterm
It’s scary how quickly most players stop working once they commit. Committing isnt the end goal. It’s a stop along the way.
It’s certainly an accomplishment to be in the top 6.8% of HS players, but now youre ONLY competing against that %. PLUS older, more experienced players.
Average coaches think they win games or “make” players.
Elite coaches understand that players win games & “make” themselves.
We’re consultants.
#coaching
Stop shielding players from failure. It’s GOING to happen. And it’s going to happen a lot. This is baseball.
We need to teach these young men that it isn’t fatal & it isn’t final.
Welcome the challenge 👊🏻!
#failure
I just heard that
@NovaMBB
hasn’t had a Top 20 Recruiting Class in the last 5yrs. However, they have won TWO National Titles 🏆🏆!
Focus on your game...not the rankings. Don’t buy into the fake hype.
#intangibles
Very cool that Altuve won the MVP. However, this does not mean that all you 5’5 2B will become an MVP now. His talent and preparation are insane. He didn’t change the game for you. He simply worked his tail off.
